"I feel more like a force of nature than a person."
That's one of the first things Doctur Dot says to MASS APPEAL in the latest edition of Open Space. Over the last few years, he and Johnny Venus, collectively known as EarthGang, have become a standout act within Atlanta's vast rap ecosystem. They toured with Ab-Soul and Bas in 2014. and contributed to DJ Khaled's 'Major Key' album in 2016. Fast-forward 18 months and they've got a deal with J. Cole's Dreamville Records imprint, plus national anticipation heading into what looks to be a busy 2018.
"[J. Cole] came down to our house in Atlanta a couple times, just on some like pullin' up," says Dot. "A couple conversations later, couple smoke sessions in the garage later, and…"
"We never really had that type of interaction with an artist that was steps ahead of us, but also took an interest in us," adds Venus, before noting that in their conversations with other labels, the duo's creative input wasn't always valued or solicited.
EarthGang also remembers how the social landscape in their native West Atlanta changed around 2015 and 2016, and speak on how the spirit of that era and the Tin Man inspired the titles of their recent EPs.
The 'Mirrorland' LP is coming soon. Check out the new Open Space above.
