It's not that surprising? Plenty of old games were huge, just different level of fidelity. If anything the old model of "open world" (before it was called that) was more detail oriented rather than huge spaces of open nothing or repetitive "camps". Look at Might and Magic 6 & 7 for an example of that model; it's basically an offline mmo, where the world is huge but every zone is packed with detail and handcrafted dungeons.

i think that has to do with the pace and tone of the narration, in a ton of horror videos like essays or reviews the creator speaks very calmly and at a slower pace

this is crazy. I was on wikipedia reading about Human Entertainment and all the games they made and stumbbled upon Mizzurna Falls. Got home from work and this video was on my recommends youtube actually worked for once So tragic that this was never released outside Japan

The Diehard connections in Mizzurna Falls might be like the Kindergarten Cop connections in Silent Hill. Japanese devs using American movies as reference material for what America is like in the days before the internet made that easy.

I was so confused that I haven't heard of this game, because I was really into a lot of horror games during the PS1 and even better PS2 time period. The controls of this game, like the fight scenes and escaping the dog look frustrating. I can see the massive twin peaks and David Lynch influence here. What a wild ride! Thank you for sharing this game and story.

Happens a fair bit in these old games. You can see through layers you shouldn't. Games aren't actually 3D so stuff can draw through other stuff.

The best possible ending for this game IN REAL LIFE, is a low poly (low by modern standards) remake from the ground up, which plays like Deadly Premonition (no event is missable). Music and 2D art carry over from the existing PS1 version, most 3D level geometry may be ported as is.
