Yeah, those reels are awesome. But you know the most amazing thing on this video? That filming and sound! Close-ups and moving things all around like that and keeping it in focus is SO difficult. You are really a pro. Thanks, Rod, for another fun, interesting and expert filming and audio job!

This is kinda longwinded but I basically want to thank you Rod - thank you! I don't usually comment, and even if I do I usually use my other account. However, if I may be sappy just this once. I'm a 22 year old software engineering student here in Canada, and I want to say thank you for your videos. Not only are they super cool in terms of your editing and the places you visit, but they are super informative as well. I didn't grow up with anyone fishing, but after watching your videos from your first video to now and continuing, I have learnt a lot and hope to relocate to Australia and fish. I'm going to Singapore soon too, and hopefully I can take what you show and practice it there! Also, everyone of my friends know I'd like to have a boat similar to yours. I have the same passion for upgrading things I have. I also detail cars as a side business. So I love the upgrades you make too. your car and boat and the hands on experience of it. Shoutout from Canada, it's never a dull day, especially when you post. Thank you for always delivering!

It might be a good idea to add some loctite to those screws to make sure they don't come loose over time and break the seal. The fact that they were difficult to remove and had a blue color on the threads makes it seem like the manufacturer had added some previously.
@raynman64663 ай бұрын
Loctite is 100% unnecessary on a fishing reel.

I was a Reel Technician for Penn Reels / Jarvis Walker back in the 90's, and repaired and serviced countless Spinfishers over the years. All I can say is.. WOW... the reels have really come a long way! Nice one Rod.

Jarvis walker technician.......... poor dude. This reel shows no saltwater use at all which tells me either Rob is being dishonest or the penn reel has technology aka quantum mechanics ,that has displaced all salt and sand that ALWAYS sticks to egg beaters under the spool.

Thanks for the update with this. I've been wondering how they were going after no doubt being dunked while kayak fishing. I bought a new reel recently and now wish I'd seen this first. I would have happy forked out a little extra after seeing that all those seals really do work. The guys at my local fishing shop talked assured me that no reels - even the ones that claim to be fully sealed, would keep water out if it was fully submerged). I do my best to keep mine out of the water, but have slipped and fallen in the water while reef fishing twice already with my new one.

Sea conditions looked pretty unpleasant! For people that don't fish from a kayak or small boat, those waves would have been a lot bigger than they looked in the video. Love my Slammers, they don't get 10% of the abuse that Rod's reels get, so imagine they will last forever!
@meturns46663 ай бұрын
Great video Rod n good thinking, quality of the reels are unbelievable in a world of designed obsolescence. Just a tip , rubber bands , speargun rubber when made to right thickness n put in between screw and driver will 9/10 times get it out .. probably the best hack I've been given ..

Rokkit, I use Penn reels myself. 4 spinfishers and 3 slammers. Very rugged and well sealed. I kayak fish the Pacific Ocean all around the Southern California coast. Saltwater is a killer when it comes to fishing reels. Penn offers quality products and yes they are alittle heavier in weight than other brands, but on a kayak, you to have those reels that can hold up to saltwater. I haven't bought one of the new Authority reels yet. I don't think I'll need one. But yes, I want one, just to have one. Anyway, Rokkit thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Take care. California waving a hand .

Heya, Rod. Long time follower here. I have Penn reels 30 years old that I still use. Other than an initial addition of a grease I like in reels, nothing. Anyhow, hopefully so Penn read and understand, I will be ordering at least 2 new slammers due to your feedback, and am looking at other overhead reels in their range that I'm not sure you don't use... Like many, I suspect, the harshness anyone that has any mechanical sympathy sees you subject your equipment to, realises that Penn is good shit!

More than the interior condition what amazes me is you haven't changed the drag discs in that long? With big powerful fish like you go after, I am really shocked by that. As good as those reels are, I'd advise replacing the seals each time you take them apart or add marine gasket sealant. if you do replace gaskets/seals order multiples so you don't have to wait for a replacement *the seal the splits reel in two*
