Just a heads up, if you ever need cylinder shims they can be had for free. The small anti theft tags on 90% of merchandise have 2 .001" pieces of steel in them. Just clip one end of the tag open with scissors and they'll slide right out. They are the perfect thickness, length, and width for shiming locks.

Do you know if people use feeler gauges for this kind of stuff? With some slight modding to get them narrow enough, I'd think they'd be able to act like these shims pretty easily while also having a built in way to keep track of them. Also got me thinking that you could probably drill or punch a hole in a bunch of cylinder shims and then string/mini carabiner them together to have multiple while not keeping them in a box that may try to open itself at random.
@DeviantOllam2 жыл бұрын
if you gave the a small curve, maybe. the cylinder shims have a slight curve to them which makes them a little stiffer and allows them to fit more smoothly into the lock cylinders.
@hilltopy2 жыл бұрын
My guess is that a gauge would bend itself well enough due to how thin it would need to be in order to fit. From there, assuming you didn't narrow down the whole thing, you'd still have some length be the full width, as well as the rest of the gauges in the holder to grab onto. I'll have to test it if/when I get a cylinder and blank to mess with.
@derekbroestler76872 жыл бұрын
I typically just keep a few in my pin kit BUT..... For covert storage tip for shims..... Inside a standard "click pen".... Gel pens work better as the ink cartridge tends to be thicker and keep shims free of the spring so it won't interfere with function. If you wanted you could also use a standard Bic stick pen with a cap, which you CAN use as a follower tool by using both the barrel of the pen and the clip on the cap to wedge it into place, it's just a LOT more of a PITA than something designed for the task, and it's a LITTLE harder to get the shim out because the barrel of the pen is thinner, but it's easily done using the ink cartridge... (unless, pro tip, you round the corners of your shims) Also, on REALLY covert shims.... You know those stick on inventory control tags, cut one of them open and you'll find two of the thinnest (but functional if you're really careful) cylinder shims EVER.... Though they ARE perfectly flat and a bit difficult to work with because they're so thin, AND you prolly don't want to store more than one of them together if you're walking though any place that has inventory control.

My wife once worked at one of those restaurants where rich people eat. You know the type. White tablecloth. Always throwing fund raisers. Bright red lipstick was part of the dress code. The shade was affectionately referred to by the staff(including management) as "hooker red". Your video reminded me of this tidbit, and I thought it might be an interesting little "temperature check on society today" to share it. So much racism at those fund raisers. Like. I'm a tall blue eyed white guy. And I was like "damn..." The food was excellent though, and the booze never stopped following.

I'm not from around here...why do these shims look a lot like the thin metal components inside the white rfid tags?, I'm expecting a size difference though
@RealUnimportant2 жыл бұрын
It's basically the same stock; if you have a reliable source of those RFID tags (that doesn't need to the actually tag stuff0 they can often be used as shims as well; they're a bit thinner, so the lack of curve isn't as crucial but it does mean you have to work harder on keeping them straight, and they're also not as long so there's a risk of getting them lost in the lock.
@donaldhobson88732 жыл бұрын
Ah, but what if you want to shim, but only have access to 1 side of the lock. Either you would need a larger, L shaped shim. Or you would need a key cut high on the tip, low everywhere else. (As the key goes forward, all pins get pushed to top and then down. Shim catches them from same side on way down.)

This has the feel of a kitchen gadget that the commercial says will save you so much time, but is hardly handy at all. Shim case: Rn, my shims are kept in my pin kit. If I'm shimming a lock, odds are I'm rekeying it, so everything is right there. The Schlage cap removal tool: That would be handy, but those tools can be pretty cheap elsewhere. I also worry how well the plastic would hold up after time. The shim holder: I would never use it. I find it quite easy to do by hand, and the shim holder is just more steps. The only place I see where this could be handy is if I'm onsite and trying to be stealthy in only decoding the pins. While I appreciate the effort to make tools that make it easier for us, I think this tool will be a no go for me.
@DeviantOllam2 жыл бұрын
No worries... we know that you simply don't want to own something called "lipstick" ;-) For real, though, I get it... for folk with more fully-featured kits and who travel with pin kits especially, I get your point totally.
