The old bridge will be closed for a major repair for a year after the opening of the new one. When I was a kid, I walked on the old one in November 1987. Gosh long time ago. The next project to be completed is the elevated motorway on Rama 2. First pase to be opened in a few years.

@@christinewitton3260nope. We're not Cambodia or Laos. We don't loaned our lands to China just to have them built. We can do it on our own. Like the Highspeed Rail, we internally financed it ourself the progress might be slow because we didn't just let China come in and build the whole thing, but at least we don't let China own the whole thing. Thai build, Thai use, Thai own.
The new Rama 9 Bridge was built with the objective of connecting to a new motorway that is currently under construction. To make traveling between Bangkok and other provinces more convenient. Without having to pass through the city center (CBD), you can use this new bridge to connect the Rama III road (Main city of Bangkok side) to Rama II road (Thonburi side) to go down to the western and southern regions of Thailand. Or in the future it can be used to travel to Pattaya as well.

I remember the marathon marking the opening of the Rama9 Bridge in 1987 to honor the former King Bhumipol. The historic event drew 80,000 registered attendees. There wasn't much space on the bridge without people. Nowadays, people aren't as enthusiastic about participating in the event as they and their parents once were. The irony is that the concept of a marathon has transformed into a walking street with food and drink on the bridge.
I recall being in Bangkok for the opening of the original Rama 9 Bridge back in the 80's. Had a house on Charoen Krung Soi 85 and walked to the bridge from there with my Thai family. Huge crowds and plenty of food stalls. Really unforgettable memories.

Is the bridge name linked with Hindu God "Rama"?
@chalineep.902410 ай бұрын
@@issshu2810 From ancient times, South East Asia, including Thailand, was influenced by Indian religions, believes and languages. One of them were the beliefs in some Hindu gods such as Rama (or sometimes ‘Pra Ram’ in Thai). Above all is the belief that a monarch is an avatar of God, especially Rama. So many Thai monarchs’ names have contained the word “Rama” or “Pra Ram.” Specifically for the current dynasty (Chakri dynasty), the name of each king is simplified in English as King Rama I, King Rama II, King Rama III, and so on. King Rama X is the current monarch of Thailand. And, if you have ever visited Thailand, you can see these names are reflected in names of major roads and bridges (like in this clip).
