Above is a portion of the Martha Graham Dance company's rehearsal of Agnes de Mille's "Rodeo" in New York City during the week of Sept. 16, 2023. On Sept. 27, the company will begin rehearsals at The Soraya ahead of the world premiere of GRAHAM100, launching at The Soraya on Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.
"Rodeo" is one of the 20th century’s most important ballets, breaking ground and also standing at the center of American-made dance. Now, for the first time, The Martha Graham company dances the piece and brings their own powerful technique. These are not dainty ballerinas. This piece of Americana first debuted in the middle of WWII as a piece meant to uplift American culture and inspire pride in our nation-at-war overseas.
The Soraya's Opening Night introduces a new musical arrangement of the original Aaron Copland score by GRAMMY-winner Gabe Witcher and a bluegrass sextet (in this video, you’re hearing a recording of the Copland original, not the new bluegrass version).
