Nice review there. Very strange that the model has a NSE logo as the real loco definitely did not carry one. There are many images, on the internet, of this loco in Hanson livery. No NSE logo to be seen. Yes they are basic but great entry level locos for those dipping their toes into the hobby, on budget constraints or even ripe for upgrading if the owner chooses. They certainly have a place in today’s market.

The NSE loco must be a blunder on Hornby’s part then. It’s probably easily removable with some gentle persuasion. It is a fantastic model despite the lack of detail but it doesn’t take much effort to make these models way better. The model will definitely receive sound, weathering and lights in the future and after it should be an absolute stunner. Thanks for watching bud 👍

59101 never had a bell fitted in real life. As for the NSE sticker, it was applied at Whatley depot for what I believe was a depot joke. It did run round with it for a while. If you put 59101 NSE in search on Flickr, it will come up.

Sorry to say the sticker WAS on the real loco and many pics of it.

A shame they took it off then. I’ve seen the real thing quite a lot and never seen the NSE logo.

@@fyfieldjunction Yes it was on for a little while, I only know because a mate of mine who knows everything about 59s showed me pictures of it.

It is correct the NSE sticker is on the real loco that end.

Ah ok, cheers for that. Quite unique I suppose.

I think the reason for that hole where you mentioned the bell should be is because they’ve literally used the same mould as the class 66 where it has a headlamp.

Got the dapol class 59 on order think they are due soon. For not much more ££s you get lights n no traction tyres. A like Hornby but a think they could have retooled this one.

I’ll definitely be getting one of the dapol ones. It would be nice if Hornby had upgraded there’s further especially considering the price of there’s now.

@@fyfieldjunction yeah should be a good loco if the class 68 is anything too go by, I did think they was going to do one with the smoke gen but seems to have disappeared.

Well it isn’t the best but with some modifications like adding lights or metal handrails, can make this simple thing looking more professional. Sadly its the only 59 I can buy here in Germany because importing them is expensive and there is only one shop in the entire country that sells British models. Great review btw.

As basic as these models are they definitely have their place in the hobby. I’ll definitely be adding some upgrades at some point. Thanks for watching 👍

The only 2 problems with this locomotive that hornby could improve on are moving axle boxes and working lights otherwise, it's a perfect model. If you want working lights and axleboxes, I recommend the Dapol class 59. Batch 1 out now, new batch coming in Q1 of 2024

Definitely agree that model needs upgrading. Working lights at the very least would be good. As for the dapol class 59 I have one with the factory sound and I’ve done a review on it. Looking forward to the next batch of which I’ve preordered one of them
