Ugh this was so important to hear. I struggle with dental phobia too and its just nice knowing someone gets it instead of constantly being told "well....no one LIKES going to the dentist"
@dianamurtaugh641
@dianamurtaugh641 7 жыл бұрын
Amongst other phobias the dentist is one for me too! I'm pretty sure I have my dad to thank for that. My first visit to the dentist; my dad went first, and he was back there screaming in pain! Then they come tell me it's my turn. There were a few times that they wanted to do a root canal, and I have the tooth pulled so that I don't have to come back! I found that ear phones help with the noise, and vicks vapor rub under the nose for smell.

Sam Pruski hey! I work at a pediatric dentist office, and kids are usually pretty scared of the dentist which can of course develop into a full-on phobia. It might feel weird, but if you tell your dentist/hygienist we can do a lot to help! At my office we treat patients with phobias using something called "tell/show/do", where everything that's going to happen is explained in detail before it's done (ie this is what this tool is, this is what it does, this is how it helps you), then showing (this is what it feels like, this is where we're using it), checking that you're comfortable, and then doing it. I myself don't have a dental phobia, but i've seen this help a lot of our patients! (Side note: our patients can be as old as 26 under american insurance systems, so this applies to older patients as well! And there is no shame if you're older than 26 either!). Just tell whoever you see the next time you go that you have dental anxiety and ask what they can do to help you feel more comfortable- and tell them if you have ideas! The right doctor will do what it takes to help. Hope this was helpful to everyone commenting about their dental phobias! (Again, I am by no means claiming this will "cure" your anxiety- just that it might help!)

I have social phobia. There was a time, where I was at Kroger with my mom and my grandmother, and there was a huge crowd of people. I said out of nowhere "everyone is looking at me, I need to leave." I started getting a panic attack, and I was afraid to get a panic attack, where everyone can see it, so I tried to relax. I am thirteen years old, and I have dealt with this since I was nine. I will mostly stay home, and I wouldn't go out in public, if people were around, I would always hide, if people would knock on the door or if I saw someone outside. I really appreciate your videos, and opening up about your phobias. I was always afraid to open up about mine, because I was afraid about people thinking that I was crazy or weird.

You are tearing me apart Lisa Probably should just stick to public transit. Facing our fears is a valuable part of the human experience, but if driving has you this tightly gripped by fear, it might be best to skip it. If facing a fear has this high a likelyhood to getting yourself or someone else hurt....hell, who needs driving. I'm sure you'd prefer devoting that mental and emotional energy to other pursuits. This goes to you other posters as well. If you live in a small town, walking is easy. As for big cities, ypu can either do public transit or carpool with friends or family. You always got options and alternatives, at least for this particular phobia.

I have cynophobia (fear of dogs) and people never respect it and always tell me "it's okay he doesn't bite, he just wants to play" and what they don't get is that I cannot control my fear, even tho I know that dog won't hurt me I still can't be next to it, I get soooooo anxious, and I have given up on explaining people that I cannot control my actions when I'm around dogs at all, most of the times I start crying and people tell me I'm being dramatic. And what makes people think my phobia is less serious than the other ones is because I can't recall a moment where a dog attacked me or I saw a dog attack someone, there is just one episode that my mom thinks my phobia originated from, and I think that might be why I am so afraid of dogs, but I can't remember that episode at all even when my mom has told me exactly how it happened, so people think my phobia is just me being dramatic when. I. can't. control. it. :)))

I relate to this a lot! I used to be terrified of dogs as well (I overcame it simply because a lot of people around me had dogs, like Sarah's own "exposure therapy"), but I remember everyone being all "Well he doesn't bite"/"He won't hurt you" and telling me my fear is irrational. Like fam I know but I can't stop it??

Don't feel bad,I'm 26 and still don't have a license. It's getting harder as I get older to be without a car...let alone explain to people that at my age I still don't drive. I wish I can get over my fear but as you know it's not that simple. I'm in the process of trying to get past it because it does hinder my life and I know once I drive I'll have more freedom. Don't feel pressured into driving until you're ready,no matter what others think they don't know what's going on in your mind or what triggered your fear.

The mental anguish that comes with these elaborate routines we put ourselves through just to avoid our anxieties is beyond exhausting. Especially when you're completely aware of how ridiculous you're being. You know the people in your life care and understand and are willing to compromise on how you do certain things different, but it still feels shameful. I hear a lot of the same feelings towards my phobias in what you were saying about yours and that really gave me peace of mind. Thank you for opening up and sharing this with us!

ok I really liked this video. I keep telling you over twitter how much I love watching you talk about this topics. -(sorry if my english is not the best)- I recently started therapy with a psychologist because my fears and anxiety were taking control of my life. I'm 25 and I live with my fiance since 2015. I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina, we have a super high level of insecurity on the streets, mostly they rob you, or if you are a girl kidnap you, rape you, kill you, or use you for prostitution, etc. So, whatching the news, or being online where you cannot escape from these facts isn't helping me. I'm really scared in the streets, thinking everyone is a threat, either they are gonna rob me or kidnap me or kill me, whatever it may be. In my mind, the worst is going to happen to me, no doubt. (I have never experienced anything traumatic myself). So this makes me not want to go out, grocery shopping or to the theater or nothing, and makes me really sweaty and nervous to be anywhere that doesn't have security or police near, etc. (I started the 30 days brave challenge and really helped me, as well as the tracker on my bullet journal, so I can feel less like shit for "not doing things" when I checked some things I can do). In my case, it's also a learnt fear, as you said, because it was my mother who kept worrying about my safety and not letting me go out so much when I was younger, so now I'm so scared that I can't do stuff. Also, I can't go to the dentist and watching you explain your fear made me nod along beacuse I completely understand you, but hey, at least you can do it sometimes... I haven't been in 10 years and it's really frustrating, as you said, to watch the rest go and do what they have to do and it not being a big deal, but for me it's like a torture. This, among other stuff... like drawing blood. UGHH, the though of it makes me anxious. Anyway, thank you for sharing and opening up, I'm really glad this topics are being shared. I love your channel, I really hope you keep doing this videos! love you! xo

I have driving anxiety too and it sucks because no one realizes it's real. I tell people I'm literally TERRIFIED of driving and they're always like "oh i was scared too". No, it's not the same. I literally cry at the thought of driving. I'm almost 21 and still don't have my license and everyone makes me feel bad about it and I do feel horrible about it and my life and everyone elses would be so much easier if I could drive. I wish I could understand why I'm terrified. I was always so excited to drive, then one day, I couldn't do it. I guess too much risk and I am scared of being independent even though I desperately want to be.

I'm 26 and I've never had a driver's license. In today's world I don't really feel like it's too important, with buses, trains, taxis, subways and Ubers it's not like we can't figure out ways around having to drive. That being said, I live in a small town and we don't even have a bus here but everything I need is within walking distance and I work from home purposefully so I don't have to drive as much and I don't have to interact with large crowds of people. I will say that my phobia of driving has helped me stay, physically, healthy (since I pretty much walk to most places like the grocery store.)

I have carpophobia which is a fear of wrists. It's so irrational and bizarre that as I'm typing this it is not registering as a word on the internet and is underlined red as if I made a spelling mistake. I can't really treat it because it's something I can't avoid like I have wrists. I'm not bothered so much by my own wrists as I am by other peoples'. But kids at my school have found out and come up to me and shove their wrists in my face and I have panic attacks in the middle of school which include hyperventilation and then I am in a shitty mood for the rest of the day which is superrrrrr fun. People make fun of me for it which, again, super fun. But yeah, that's me. Love your vids btw ; )

Hi, I know this comment is already like one year old but I found this to be very interesting, because I've literally never seen anything like this before. First of all tho, sorry that the kids in your class are/were acting so ignorant, hopefully it has gotten better! But secondly: What exactly scares you about wrists so much? Like which specific part is so freaky to you? The veins? That'd be the only thing that comes to mind for me. And also, how do you think you got the fear? Did you have any traumatic experiences that could've caused this or anything else mentioned in the video? Sorry to bother you and if you don't feel comfortable answering I totally understand!

Thank you so much for opening yourself up about the phobias, especially the driving anxiety! I have it too! I didn't actually know it was a real thing until I heard you talking about it. It's developed over the last 3 years (I've had my license for 5 years!). I need to be actually mentally preparing myself before I'm going to drive. It feels like all my body alarms are ringing and that something is TERRIBLY WRONG while I'm driving. It always drains my energy, so when I step out of the car I feel like I'm going to pass out. It gets much worse when I have to drive without any preparation, I'm literally shaking!!! I'm really going to go out of my comfort zone this summer, I need to drive to work every day!

You're so amazing for opening up to us. I feel you - what you went through with your dental procedures, I went through with accutane. I have the WORST medical anxiety, I am almost 21 years old and I still have to have my mom or a close friend come with me to every appointment so someone can hold my hand in case I pass out or can't stop crying. I would feel like such a baby coming into offices with my parent, but I had to live my truth and do what was best for me. Getting my blood drawn once a month for more than half a year was so difficult, but it was so worth it! I got my skin to where I wanted it, and I learned that even though I have this awful anxiety, I can get through it with a lot of determination. Phobias are never easy. I hear you

Two years ago or so i was diagnosed with agora phobia and panick disorder. To me it was something that had slowly build up over a long time, starting with not being able to take the bus for a few years and then not being able to walk outside alone. I had to quit school in my second year of highschool cus of my mental health, so 2 years ago. Because of that i stopped going outside at all for about 3 months. I got alot of help, still do, so i got better after a while. It started with driving with my dad so i could see other things than just my room and get a change of pace. Now i dont have agora phobia, but its still difficult to go out alone sometimes. I rarely get panick attacks and i just got off my medication after using them for years. Things like this takes time but i think, at least for me, i'm stronger then ever before and finally glad to be alive and do the things i want to.

This is such a great video because it is nice to hear someone else talk about situations that I struggle with everyday and say my exact thoughts. I also have driving anxiety and it is so bad because it effects not only my life, but others in my life as well. Some family and my boyfriend who I live with have to make their schedules revolve around me so I can always have a ride to school and work. I'm 22 and do not have a license, BUT it is my summer goal to get one before next semester. I am so afraid that when I graduate next year I'll won't be able to find a professional job because I'm not going to be able to drive myself anywhere. Like you, I also took a longer time at a community college because I didn't want my life to move forward and be pushed into having to drive other places that's not the nearby school I was going to. (We are so much alike, btw!) Thank you Sarah for being here to talk to us and for being so helpful.

I know this is super later (like 7 months lol) but I rewatched this video because it's really helped me feel less weird about my dental phobia. Before an appointment I won't be able to sleep or really do anything because I'm so worried, and I HAVE to dedicate the entire day to the dentist as well. I physically can't do anything but sleep and probably cry after I get home because the whole appointment feels like the edge of a panic attack. I have to take anxiety medication before I go, and even that doesnt stop me from being totally hysterical. I never really told anyone aside from my mom about this so I never realized how many other people expirience this. Thank you for this video, I really appreciate it.

I'm terrified of pregnancy. I never wanted kids, but when I was probably 9 or 10 I saw a *horribly graphic* (warning) scene on tv where a pregnant woman got bashed in the stomach with a metal door and lost her baby. Blood everywhere, I was so traumatized that I couldn't even cry. I laid awake all night. If I see a pregnant (especially a heavily pregnant) person walking around in public I get that "I can't watch but I still peek" feeling. Like I'm going to witness them trip and fall on their stomach and have a miscarriage. Then at the same time I HAVE to look because what if I see potential danger and can warn them? When my sister was pregnant I was terrified. If she visited, I wouldn't let her get up. If she needed anything, I got it for her. She had preeclampsia and very swollen feet so she didn't mind the gesture. But had no idea just how scared I was. Constantly telling her to be careful lol. So I'm definitely not having kids. Wasn't interested before the phobia started, definitely not now.

I have driving anxiety as well. I took my driving license test 4 times before getting it and have not been able to drive ever since (it's been 3 years...). My anxiety is so bad that I would literally cry during each of my driving lessons and even having someone reliable that can drive sitting next to me does not help... The worst thing about it is that driving is such a natural thing for most people that they don't understand why I am afraid of it and why I would rather completely avoid it. I'm so glad you made this video! I have panic disorder with agoraphobia and videos like this help to spread awareness about my condition. A lot of people don't know what agoraphobia is but you summarized it well. It negatively impacts my quality of life so much. I'm able to go out to work, but I usually have one of my parents with me to do anything else. I'm 25 so like you said, when people don't understand they think I'm like a baby. They don't understand how crippling panic attacks are and that I don't want to take a prn every time I try to do exposure because it defeats the purpose of it. Since you talked about exposure, would you be willing to make a video about exposure and response prevention therapy? ERP is commonly used for phobias like mine and also can be useful for people with OCD in some cases. :) another video idea I have is EMDR but I'm not sure if you know much about it or would find it interesting. I started it a few weeks ago and it's the most difficult mental health treatment I tried but it's so worth it. Even though I read about it, it was hard for me to truly understand it until I did it myself. My counselors both feel that I have ptsd from bullying and assault and those issues led to my agoraphobia as well as social phobia, as you said trauma is a possible cause. EMDR is a common treatment for ptsd but from my experience and talking to my counselors they both feel it can help with other phobias and separate mental health issues! I'd love for you to talk about it if you're interested. :) thanks so much for making this and your makeup looks flawless!!

I have social phobia and panic disorder. its really difficult because I want to have friends but I physically cannot get close to people. if I push myself to talk to people I end up distancing myself as soon as things get too intense. I get dizzy, feel like I will pass oit, or even get physically ill. What makes me even more sad is that I wasnt like this as a teen or child. This was brought on my a series of traumatic events. I just want my life back. This is part of the reason Im so connected to youtube and the internet. It makes me feel not so alone. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Thank you so much for this video! I can't stress enough about how phobias aren't simply overreacting, but most people in my life don't get it. I have bathophobia which is the fear of deep waters. I had a near death experience as a child with drowning so that is where it stems from and it is so strong that as soon as I can't feel the ground beneath my feet in a lake I will start to panic immensely. It isn't too debilitating as I just stay at the shallow parts but it sucks during summer when I want to go swimming with friends etc.

I always love your videos Sarah and I love when you open up to us. I'm turning 26 in less than a month and I stayed at my community college for a long time too because the bus was my only way of getting there. Also the bus schedule where i live sucks soooo bad. There's a bus at 8, 12 and 4, that's it. So I had to plan my school schedule around the bus schedule ughhh it was exhausting and unfortunately I'm still doing it at my university. My dad wants to teach me how to drive but he also doesn't understand how anxious I am about it. I've had two other people try to teach me because my mom doesn't know how to drive and each time something happens. I've had quite a few incidents in cars (a friend of mine drove off the road, down a hill and we ended up in a graveyard, also I was in the car with my neighbor the brakes stopped working and the car kept accelerating) which made my fear even worse. I know I need to learn how to drive because it's interfering with my education but it's not going to be easy. All I can do is try and not give up!

This video made me feel a lot better, actually. People tend to give me a lot of grief about my phobia of injections. They'll ask me what it is I'm actually afraid of, and there's nothing I can say, really. I'm not afraid of pain (intellectually, I know it barely hurts) or blood or breaking of the skin. It's just.. there. It's primal, somehow, it's not rational. I get a very strong flight response that I cannot intellectually override and I can't remember a single time I had to get a shot or blood taken where I haven't left crying. I remember a doctor wanting to test me for some allergy and I freaked out so much she decided it wasn't worth it. It's something compounded by trauma than caused by it, too. As a child I moved to Nigeria for a few years and the vaccinations before going there were already a nightmare. Then lucky me I got malaria, and the doctor there kept messing up and having to redo injections and I was so out of my mind that my father had a hard time holding me, a tiny 7 year old, down for it. It just makes me feel like a cornered animal and I've never really found anything that helps sadly. ANYWAY lengthy ramble, I'm just glad you're promoting understanding of these things, and that they're not a choice or somebody being a drama queen.

Thanks for posting this video! My own phobia is a little strange because it's hard for me to put into words. If I think about something large fitting into something small - for example, 100 people trying to cram into a tiny room, it'll set me off. I think the scale of things plays into it too? Wind turbines freak me out because they look small from a distance but up close, they're massive. I know it's a really bizarre phobia to have but it's the only thing that's given me panic attacks. Luckily, because it's not something present in my everyday life, I can avoid it but I know I've had it since I was a child. I just wish I knew where it came from.

I have a crucifixion phobia as well as snakes. I was raised Catholic(no longer) and went to a Catholic school until 8th grade. So a lot of church and having to watch some type of video about Jesus dying every Easter was terrible. I vividly remember being in 5th grade and squeezing my best friends hand during the worse part of the video (btw it was cartoon and not graphic and I hardly watched) but it was horrible. In High school I spoke up to my Social Studies teacher and asked if I could be excused from watching a part of Spartacus bc there is a scene in that movie and he let me skip the entire class. I was so relieved that day I'll never for get it. I really appreciate this video btw

I am terrified of needles. Thinking about it makes my heart race. If I know that I will have to get a shot, I cry, and my heart races and my stomach feels like it's flying, and I just break down. Even with my experiences (which were not bad, just the build up was horrible) I know it's okay, but I can't get over it. It's came to the point where, I love ASMR, because it's relaxing, and I enjoy it, but all medical roleplays, I just can't. Because it's so realistic, and you feel like you are right there, but 80% of roleplays are medical which means about 30% of ASMR videos are medical, which I can't watch. I don't think I've ever had a panic attack over this fear though. And I know it's okay, and not the end of the world, but that's how I see it.

I used to be so so afraid of maggots. But I don't know if it could be classes as a phobia. I think it started because I saw that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with the maggot man when I was young and it terrified me to no end (I had a friend who liked the show so I watched with her sometimes.) If someone ever said something about maggots or it was shown for a moment in a show I couldn't sleep well that night. It was pretty bad. Luckily, I didn't have to confront it often. But recently my neighbor threw away some meat in the green bin too early and it got maggots on it. I never realized they were so small. Then I saw a picture of them by happenstance, and I never realized they were yellow. I thought they were pink. I'm not really afraid of them anymore. Of course I still think they're disgusting but if someone mentions them I can sleep okay that night now.

I had the worst time at the dentist getting my veneers. I would come out having panic attacks feeling like i was going to have a heart attack. During one appointment they saw how bad i was shaking, pretty much off the chair.. and released it was the adrenaline they were giving me with the anaesthetic and the way i was reacting to it. It all made sense after that. But I went several times in two months because of issues with my veneers and could never figure out why i would come out crying until my last appointment...

A phobia I don't hear people talking much (at all) about is androphobia, but I've read a lot about it and it has helped me understand myself better, which I always try since I feel so ill all the time (I have not been diagnosed nor have I self diagnosed with it, but reading about it made me understand some of my irrational responses to certain exposure), especially since these irrational responses (mental and physical) developed around the time I was 9 years old and have not disappeared since. What made me extremely aware of them, as I experienced them from the outside in, was the fact that whenever I was having this anxious reaction to a male and there were acquaintances around me they would try to explain my behavior with: "oh, she's just shy, don't worry", while I was unable to even speak, close to an anxiety attack in front of them. But I've known for years, I'm not shy. I have never been shy. I'm ANXIOUS, extremely so. These responses don't always happen, and I've tried to differenciate the triggers, but when I compare them they're not similar, and the intensity of my responses variate. What is clear to me is how they developed, and it makes me feel so weak to know that my sibling went through the exact same experiences as me, but she does not have this problem at all, she's so strong and extroverted, but even so, I can see the other behaviors she's developed because of everything we went through since we were kids, some she doesn't even realize are clearly patterns, but try to (I fail most of the time) not compare the gravity of the consequences those experiences brought, since it is unfair to expect that we'd react the exact same way. I'm very interested in psychology because I'm fascinated by behavior, thought process, biology, analyzing environmental factors and their consequences, etc. I've only had one class of health psychology and one of sociology, also one in gender and health, and I fell even more in love with the subjects. I try to understand myself as best as I can, because it sort of helps me to not feel as disjointed, as chaotic inside, but I've also noticed that analyzing myself doesn't help when I feel so out of my body, it makes me feel even more detached from my body and even my mind, as if I'm the outsider looking in. And not even then I seem to find any sympathy or kindness for myself. So it's all pointless, honestly. But it doesn't make it any less interesting. Anyway, thank you for your honesty, I love your psychology videos and how passionate you are about it.

I have extreme dental phobia, going to the dentist is quite literally my worst nightmare and just listening to you talking about it here has heightened my anxiety quite a bit. I was fine when I was younger with the dentist until I was around 7/8 and had to get a tooth pulled because I collapsed in the waiting room right after and ever since I've had a huge fear of the dentist. I breakdown in the waiting room; having panic attacks and hyperventilating, I have to have someone with me the whole time and I need to now they will stop if I want them too. I mean i'm only 15 so I really hope this resolves itself soon but I've got a feeling its not going to.

Mine developed in adolescence as well, due to trauma and haven't left as of age 30. I had a spinal fusion surgery when I was 13 and they miscalculated my pain meds for recovery so I basically had it w/out pain meds. I went into shock and it took 4 days for them to figure it out what went wrong and even longer to get me stable. I also have sensory memories from making up during the surgery. The surgery has since failed (thanks, Ehlers danos) and I'm going to needs the rest of my whole spine fused. Yaay. I got in a car accident that's led to a driving phobia. I've also been dxed with agoraphobia and white coat syndrome (fear of doctors) since then.... and ptsd and so many other things. I joke that I'm a little bitch, but legit anxiety isn't the same as not liking something or being mildly uncomfortable and it's so important to remember that. Really neat info! Thanks for sharing. These videos are great.

I'm terrified of driving.. I eventually got my license but the process is very very strict where I'm from so I had to drive for a certain number of hours on different types of roads at different times of the day etc. So I had lots of practice hours with my instructor and I dreaded them so much. The entire time I was driving, my body was so tense, which I only realized later on because my muscles were sore lol...and my legs felt like jelly. I was also sweating from anxiety. Anyway, I hated it but finally got my license. The problem now is that I have to take another driving test in the country I currently live in because my original driver's license from my home country is not valid here so.... FML

I'm currently in the process of overcoming my fear of needles and having blood work done. I fainted during a routine blood test when I was 8 and felt nauseous and sedated the entire rest of the day, as though all energy had been sucked out of me. I managed to avoid the family doctor for almost 15 years after, but finally talked myself into getting a check-up three years ago. Since then I've had blood work done twice, local anaesthetic put in twice (wisdom teeth removal and stitches on my chin) and got several vaccines updated. At first I always had to take my mom with me and was a shivering, crying mess but I eventually went alone and I'm pretty confident at it now. I don't love it and will probably never be able to donate blood but at least I know I can take care of my health. My best tip for anyone suffering from this as well is to get the earliest appointment possible and to go on an empty stomach. If you're already feeling dizzy or nauseous, having food in your system is going to make things worse. It's ideal that way because you'll have to eat breakfast soon after your procedure, which gets your blood sugar up again.

I didn't realize that emetophobia was in the top ten most common phobias! I've had this since I can remember, I'm less afraid of myself vomiting than of others possibly vomiting. It makes winter/flu season even worse on top of season affective disorder as well as it being extremely difficult to make myself go on road trips with others! And the thought of having children freaks me out too! I want to be less afraid but I'm far too afraid to do exposure therapy (like, dude, I can barely handle my cat throwing up a hair ball okay? I get sweaty just from that or just thinking about someone throwing up or people fake gagging...) And I also have a phobia of driving or of testing. I can't tell which, I'm afraid of driving but I'm also deathly afraid of taking the driving test. I'm 24 this year and I've done it once (taken the test) and started crying half way through and any time I think about taking it again and want to start crying and just can't do it. Sometimes I can drive okay but other times I've got super high anxiety and don't even want to; I can't imagine driving without someone else who knows how to drive in the car either.

Wow I relate so much to the driving phobia, I'm 22 and still don't have my license and it really bothers me sometimes and makes it hard being able to get around places :/ it feels so nice to actually be able to relate to someone and not feel alone with that :p

Watching this video has helped me so much... I thought I was the only person in the world with dentalphobia. Hope I can overcome it someday...

I have terrible areophobia, and have had extream panic attacks whilst on flights. Enough for the air hostess to have to take me aside because I was upsetting other passengers. One technique I have found that helps my anxiety is noise cancelling head phones/ear plugs. Cancelling out and 'crunching' and 'banging noise' which are totally normal however for someone with areophobia feels like something's breaking helps calm my anxiety. Also learn how plains work, and how they are able to fly. Knowing this information takes away the fear that 'nothing is underneath you'. Hope this helps a few people xx

i found this really helpful. I have kind of an irrational fear of deep water ever since I was a child. But i'm not really sure how it developed because every one in my family likes to swim and I didn't really have a traumatizing event ever happen.
