For those confused by how he got the output value of Coal Transportation in kg please follow the steps below: 1. Open up "Coal Transportation" under the Flows folder 2. Select "Flow Properties" at the bottom 3. Double click on any empty cell 4. Under filter type "Mass" 5. On the far right is a column called "is reference" select Mass to be the reference 6. Save the flow 7. Close the "Coal Transportation" Process and reopen it 8. Once reopened select the Unit on the "Coal Transportation" Output and type in "kg - Mass" I hope this helps, I got stuck on this step for a while as it's never covered. Really good tutorial otherwise.

Hello from Italy! I am currently working with openlca and ecoinvent database. I have to apply the zinc coating to a steel tube with lateral area of 2.07 m^2, 6 m of height and 78 kg. At the beginning I used directly 2.07 m^2 for the process called zinc coating coil but my final impact results were too high. Then I read in the description of the coating process this phrase: "This module is applicable, if continuous zinc coating (galvanising) of hot or cold rolled strip- or wire-coils has to be inventoried. Data given per tonne of coated product are transformed by dividing them by the mean surface area of 64 m2/t." To obtain the right m^2 is it correct to use make the following calculations: 78/1000/64? Thank you for your answer!

Thanks for the video, well explained! However, I have some questions: why didn't you link the 'coal mining' process to the 'coal transportation' process rather than dependently linking them to the 'coal combustion' process? Is the mined coal completely different from the one transported? if no or yes, why and/or how? Thanks again in advance for your clarification.
@manuelmammen27072 жыл бұрын
Hey James, I may be able to answer your question. So if you notice the Input parameter for the Coal Transportation process was amount energy and not the coal in itself and that's why it was linked directly to the final step of combustion. So in the example in the video, you link the coal mined physically to combustion and then you link the energy that the transportation uses to transport 60 tonnes of coal. You can also link the mining process to the transport process, the only thing that changes is the reference flow which would be then be in terms of mass* km transported and then you also specify the mode of transport in the input section. Ofcourse in this example we didn't have the data for this so that's why the first method is preferred. Check out the tutorial in openLCA for PET Bottle comparison - It will complement your learning of the Software. Cheers!
