@@OpenSourceLowTech it looks like there is a little bit of fiddling to keep the parts aligned along the axis, if you made a tapered collet the taper could handle alignment while the collet grips the other part evenly. If you’d prefer to avoid 3D printing parts you might be able to find collets from something readily available. Lots of machinining equipment use collets for concentricity but I’d bet there is another less expensive source.

Excellent video with a detailed presentation of how to proceed! I can easily envision a small scale power system that utilizes solar PV, wind turbine and water turbine to continuously generate power for a lithium ion battery bank. Strategy: capture as much free energy as you can whenever it is available, charge your battery bank and then use your stored power supply wisely until the next recharge period.
@OpenSourceLowTech3 жыл бұрын
This is essentially exactly the approach with renewable energy in general; harvest abundance when you have it (sunny days, windy days, rainy months etc) and then store as much as possible to get you through the rest of the time.

Hey! Just pulled one of these off an old bike I found. If you dont have one of those flat wrenches for the cone nut, I found that it worked to bend a 2" framing nail into a horseshoe, pass it over one side of the cone nut into the flat grooves and grip it with some channel locks. Wrench or other grips on the second nut and it comes right off. The nail fits those groove sizes just the same and no special guy needed. 👍

Great idea, very good indeed. But if you want to minimize friction losses use a biciycle chain instead of a rubber belt because it produces huge drag. And the main problem is that with poor wind the belt is too heavy to start moving.
@OpenSourceLowTech2 жыл бұрын
Chain is also definitely an option, and pretty easy to implement considering it's a bike wheel hub it's mounted to. But the issue is gearing, in that to get more than 5:2 from available sprocket sets you'd need to go multi stage, which can be a bit of a faff and introduce further losses. Using a bicycle wheel as the large pulley with a belt can give up to 12:1 in a single stage, tho it does have the other issues you state. This is all mostly an issue for wind turbines, hydro is usually higher revving and can often be gotten away with direct drive.

What is the best way to mount the alternator axially to your DIY water turbine?
@OpenSourceLowTech3 жыл бұрын
Good question and not currently specifically sure, as still using the hoverboard wheels by default and this is the next option to trial. Essentially it just needs to physically attach such that the water weight hangs off the alternator bearings, and the shaft doesn't unwind out of whatever thread is being used. It does tho, like with the wingnut assembly on the current configuration with the HB wheel, need to involve a kind of universal joint type functionality, so that any misalignment between the axes of the alternator and drive shaft can be accommodated without vibration or flexing. So needs to be able to wiggle a little, basically.
@EdBecnel3 жыл бұрын
@@OpenSourceLowTech Thank you for the quick reply. Is the hoverboard alternator a more efficient alternative to the motorcycle alternator? If so, I will simply go this route. The reason I am asking is because I recently relocated from the US to the Philippines and am looking for an affordable alternative source of electrical power for the villagers here. There are nearby elevated irrigation canals that could possibly be utilized and your solution offers the most economical option that I have seen.

Motorbike alts are fairly reasonable options, but the hoverboard wheels are more efficient, powerful, easy to work with, hard wearing, and weather proof. Often also cheaper, but the one key advantage of the bike alt is that you should be able to get it anywhere in the world, whereas the wheel is more just where there's people rich enough to purchase such items. I have no idea what the Philippines has available, you may be able to find one somewhere.

Hope it not sound too much crazy! Lot of water, but low pressure and freezing problem in canadian winter. > assuming the output is AC since it's a motorcycle alternator. Yeah they tend to be three phase AC, but can be single and some have the third coil as high voltage for the starter circuit. Exactly that, yes. > the car option is already somewhat mounted.. so ? what is best ? I don't usually bother with car alts. They're about three times the power, but at about half to a third the volts per rev, and like you say not very efficient. Also quite heavy. > I was thinking to maybe rewire a car stator in a different gauge/size copper wire. Lot of work. > I also wonder if the bicycle chain can work on a horizontal plane You wouldn't want to string over too much of a distance, but if you can nestle the two sprockets closeish together then it should work fine in any orientation. > I want to put a turgo wheel horizontally, so I can maximise the very low head I have. You won't get much efficiency out of a Turgo at 1.5m head. My siphon turbine is meant for that kind of niche. > possible to reverse a small electric boat propeller to make it generate electricity? That's basically what my turbine is, but with a tube around it to generate more flow. A boat prop would I think be a more efficient runner shape, but the PSU fans a lot easier to source.

@@OpenSourceLowTech thank you for replying back I been having very hard time finding the right motor generator for my model to run for a small housing inside five propeller that I will blow air on it but I like to know is it easy to rotate by hand? They usually cog a bit, but shouldn't give problematic amounts of resistance. Should do 14VDC (rectified) at about 500 rpm or so, depending. Usually good for at least 300-400W, depending. My email's on the opensourcelowtech.org website, feel free.

Have you experimented with magnets? Or perpetual motion generators? I know they say it's impossible but just wondering if you have tried it and what your thoughts on it is?
@pm29c2 жыл бұрын
Perpetual motion is a lie, clickbait only for innocent desinformed people. If you see any video claiming that don't click, just report it is all a lie, the machines have hidden cables and that is how they are being powered. Nothing has 100% efficiency and you need energy to run stuff. You can always use "free energy" like sunlight but never believe that a generator powering a mechanical screwdriver that is itself powering the generator like the generator had 100%+ efficiency. All power is finite and is some form of a pre-existing energy like batteries use chemical energy to provide voltage and power a lamp. Those perpetual motion generators loose energy do to friction (air friction also) and as such you always need to input some energy for them to rotate. You can also see they are a lie because when a load is connected they rotate at the same speed when in reality wen you apply a load to this type of generators they get harder to spin. There are a lot of good content creators debunking this predators in youtube just dig deeper don't believe everything you see , mainly when they don't explain stuff and just run background music in the video. Also there is no conspiracy if there was such a thing as perpetual motion machines they would be in use and electricity, heating, transport and stuff would be free, and no big corporation could hide it from the thousands of good engineers scientists and informed people of the world.

You are using automobile part to drive this generator, so the most simple way i to directly use a car alternator, they output also more power than motocycles alternator and are also very common.
@OpenSourceLowTech3 жыл бұрын
Car alts are higher power and generally more available, but aren't permanent magnet so have lower efficiency, and do about a half to a third the volts per rpm. Also pretty heavy to mount and turn.

Long as you've got a water supply capable of spinning the turbine fast enough to get the voltage over 14.4DC while under some useful load, then yes. What's your meters drop and liters flow, roughly?

i was hoping to do something similer but have the fly wheel on the inner side to spin with the sprocket casset so a water wheel could run bycicle sprocket and chain and give away to change gear to find the better voltage range maybe speed

Ah I getcha. I actually did it that way the first time for that reason. Mounting the stator on the hub was easy enough, but only way I could usefully mount the rotor on the axle was getting someone to lathe out a housing for the encapsulated bike wheel bearings, which ended up working well enough, but a lot more hassle. As I say here, there are at least two viable ways of connecting the rotor to the sprocket set.

Local wreckers are usually best. Or online classifieds.
@jbx9072 жыл бұрын
motor cycle batteries are 5ah rating, these stator only produce enough amps usually 10% of battery rating, or 500mA, you'd be ;lucky to get 2A on that stator. another problem is that only single phase, manufacturers will not allow a motor cycle with a 5ah battery to charge greater than 10% or 500mah or the batteries wouldn't last quick charging lead acid motorcycle batteries, best generators are 3 phase, you can get 1.73 times more power than single phase
@OpenSourceLowTech2 жыл бұрын
Bike alts seem to vary pretty widely, and yeah they're not the perfect option for this use, but do usually do better volts per rev and overall power than anything else I can find which is prevalent and accessible in low resource environments.

@@OpenSourceLowTech i have a yamaha mio that had 5ah battery, since i change mg head light to HID 36 watts, i change my battery to 7ah, but still i would drin the battery which only eats 3amps of my head light, it would drain it in a hour or so even while riding, i even bypassed the charge controller and still had problems draining, motor bikes have a small battery even if i replace it with 7ah or 9ah, 10% safe charge is only 700mA 900mah respectively, unlike cars 50ah battery 10% safe charge is 5amps, have you tried measuring power generaton of the segway motor?
@OpenSourceLowTech2 жыл бұрын
Battery specifics would be one of the main holes in my knowledge. And also end up pretty bespoke to the install in question. I generally just ask some experts and defer to their judgement. As I understand it tho a motorbike alternator will charge a car battery just as happily as a bike's. Hoverboard wheels should be good for at least 300W nominal output, depending on specifics, and probably maybe like 4-500 if pushed. They usually do about 55VDC(rectified)/krpm and seem about 10A rated.

@@OpenSourceLowTech agree, unless we go lithium, we can charge quickly, 1C to 10C depending on specs allowed, but lead is really design yo charge 10% for 10hours so not to damage tge plates.
