Can't go wrong with voicings. And they give this tune from 1959 a little contemporary spice a la Jimmy Jam (IMO) which sounds quite cool.

Why don't you use minor 6 pentatonic scale a fifth above for dominant 7 chords ? You will have the second, third, fifth, sixth and the seventh of the chord.

Depending on the top note, you’ll get a minor 9th interval in some of the voicings which can be a little problematic.

In measure 4 of “staying close”, you said the pentatonic is C for both chords. Why is there an F# on the D7? it does sound good

The sus chords work to some degree, but the resulting effect minimzes the tonal gravity between maj 7 chords. That is, of course, what sus chords often do.
