Am a beginner to animation and opentoonz. Your 11 part videos on Opentoonz are spectacular. The salient features are covered in the minimum possible time in the minimum possible words. Very slick and a big time saver for learners, without all the time consuming pauses which seem to be part and parcel of similar videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise with the world.

After trying a few other tutorials (and having experienced frustration with other complex programs too) it was a pleasure to come across your very clear and measured approach to what otherwise can be an unforgiving interface. One thing I noticed is that the tutorials tend to want to start off teaching how to draw in Opentoonz (as you do to an extent). I expect many people, like me, already know how to use photoshop/illustrator or equivalents, so I guess a question is why it is advantageous to draw in Opentoonz rather than import levels equivalents into the program?
@paultilleryiv70505 жыл бұрын
Music to my ears! I watched a number of tutorials when I was first learning OpenToonz, and I'm grateful for them. That said, I made mental notes whenever information could be presented differently to better suit my learning style, which was a big motivator for making my own tutorial series. And discussing other software (for both pro/con comparisons, and projects that span multiple programs) would be a great topic for the future--I'll keep that in mind!

you’re a good teacher 👏 Why did you choose opentoonz? Would you make a video about what you did in other programs to make the complete animation?
@paultilleryiv70505 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Two reasons I chose OpenToonz: 1) Open source = easy, ethical access (no fees, no piracy, etc.) 2) While commercial software has lots of official training already available, OpenToonz's support material seems more limited (e.g. to my knowledge, the manual's only available in Japanese). I have a lot of topics in mind to explore in future videos, some of which would be branching away from OpenToonz--I'll definitely consider showing Adobe Programs as well!

Hi, I have a Mac. I went through lessons 00-08. Tried to download the static ffmeg. Couldn't download as dmg as you suggested. Saw this message. "No more DMG files thanks to Apple and their notarizing scam." I want to move onto lesson 09, or should I wait till I get a workaround?
@paultilleryiv70505 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Try this: when you get to the ffmpeg download page, look for a "Download as ZIP" link under that long green button. When I click that on my Mac, it gives me the option to "Open with: Archive Utility (default)," and if I choose that, I end up with the desired ffmpeg in my downloads folder. From there, you should be able to manually put it in the Applications folder (or any other location you might prefer). If technical issues persist, let me know and we'll see what we can do. Otherwise, if this options works, great! If you'll confirm, I'll update the video description accordingly.

I've just installed the program and stumbled upon this gem of a tutorial while trying to figure out DPI settings. So shall i pick 300 or 120 ?
@paultilleryiv70505 жыл бұрын
There may be factors I'm overlooking here, but my understanding: if you intend to display your work digitally (sharing it online, playing it on an HDTV, or even screening it with a digital projector), then the pixel dimensions (e.g. 1920x1080) are what really matter for image quality, not the DPI setting, which is more relevant for print. Whether the DPI is 120 or 300, an image that's 1920x1080 will have just those pixels to display on a screen--the DPI would only come into play if you printed the image out. In OpenToonz, tend to leave DPI at the default 120, and all that means is a 1920x1080 pixel image would print neatly at 16"x9" (whereas 300 DPI would squeeze the same information into a smaller, crisper print at 6.4"x3.6"). More info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dots_per_inch ... and really, that's all a long-winded way of saying, "Don't sweat it for digital video."

First of all, thank you very much for this masterpiece tutorial! I love it, it is very interesting and exciting :) I have a question, because I have one problem. My picture, which I draw, not saves right. Everything is fine, but some piece of picture(hair) dissapiared, when I am trying to save it as gif. I think, I might click Save Scene instead of Save all in the begginig and that's why it is happening. I tried to click Save All and.. still I don't have all my picture in gif. But in Open Toonz it is look normal! What could be a problem? Thanks.

It was a very helpfull tutorial video but I've got some issues. After I render an animation into gif, in the gif it kinda shows every frame I've done (for example If I animate a bouncing ball with like four frames and render it, than in the gif there will be one ball, then two balls etc..) I'm not a native speaker so sorry if my english is not perfect, but I hope it was understandable. Can anyone give me an advice what sould I do, what could be the mistake? :)
