Ive been playing TT for the PS1 on my PSP Go lol. Having tons of fun. I find it hard to hearing OpenTTD being called "retro". Makes me feel old lol. Been playing OpenTTD for over 20 years and TT for nearly 30 years this year.

the vehicle management of both game is worth mention too. I like the idea of grouping vehicle in OpenTTD but in TF2 it's easier to replace an old vehicle. also Timetable system from OpenTTD is very neat but TF2 just don't has it.
@MasterHellish11 сағат бұрын
Never really found a use for grouping vehicles in OpenTTD. You don't really need the timetabling and transport either 2 due to the automatic spacing.

@@MasterHellish Personally I use it to micromanage autorenewal of vehicles, as I play with large vehicle sets and choose different vehicles for different routes based on distance and amount of cargo transported. There is never a single locomotive that I use, instead a cheap to run locomotive for short hauling lines and more powerful locomotive for long distance long length lines. It also makes it clear, which line the vehicle belongs to, which was a must have before order sharing was introduced (which wasn't that long ago).

I tried Transport Fever 2 but after a few hours of learning it through the campaign I just never got back to it and played OpenTTD again :D I should probably give it another shot in a regular game. Thanks for another fun video, mr. master hellish

Impressively fair comparison! 👍 For me? I played TTD (and Locomotion) back when they were new, years later got hooked on Train Fever and now I'm a Transport Fever 2 addict! I've occasionally tried to play OpenTTD but couldn't get past the clunky UI, the dated graphics and, especially, that I couldn't rotate the map. 😟 As you said, the games solve different game play needs, I happen to prefer the living, 'realism', of TPF2 rather than the abstracted network puzzle that seems to be the main objective of OTTD. A final 'correction', you _can_ add new towns and industries in a running TPF2 game using the sandbox mod, in addition to the games own industry open/closure mechanic. Though, of course, as the manager of a transport company, you wouldn't normally expect to be managing industries or building towns. 🤔

One reason I think OpenTTD makes for a better _game_ is that the world is not necessarily predictable. This is especially in regard to industry and town growth: In Transport Fever 2, every industry has a fixed initial and maximum production, and conditions to upgrade, and if you can fulfill those conditions then the industry is guaranteed to upgrade. In OpenTTD, the industries a re much more whimsical, and require you to to always have backup plans if things go south. The way Transport Fever 2 generates maps is curious, in that maps with the industries and towns on them are made to be _solvable_ in the sense that if you build a network to reach every industry and every town, then you can precisely fulfill every town's demand and fully upgrade every industry. In short, the thing that makes Transport Fever 2 lose out for me on gameplay is that it's simply too predictable to be fun. The thing I like about Transport Fever 2 is all the network building, the railroad track laying tools are amazing to work with. Although the road tools less so, if I want to build roads I'll rather fire up Cities: Skylines 2.

I personally find this as a source of frustration for me with OpenTTD. Mostly because even when I fully ship everything from an industry along the chain, it dies or reduces the production anyways, no matter the distance or logistical fulfilment. Farms are especially guilty of this. This prevents me from working on new chains and areas of the map as I keep having to go back and fix the old ones. Because it's more predictable in TpF2, I can rely on the industries and my rail hubs to get everything, everywhere, adding in more routes as needed to meet demand. It then allows me to focus on routes generally, especially passengers, which is an area of the game I personally really enjoy, and are very meh in OpenTTD.

Have you ever played any of the Railroad Tycoon games, Master Hellish, and if so what did you think of them? I remember getting a box set as a kid that included Transport Tycoon Deluxe, RollerCoaster Tycoon, and Railroad Tycoon 2. To be honest, I never got into RT2, always preferring TTD.

The thing about transport fever 2: It was made for modding. Opentdd and TDD respectively either, are somewhat friendly to modding but doesn't require it, and was never made to support modding. But transport fever has mods for every aspect of the games assets, ui, etc.

I have mixed feeling about grids versus freeform. I like the aesthetics of the freeform, with the flowing curves and more realistic look of the track. But I do like having nice neat layouts and grids give me that control, so I know things are parallel and the like.

Give OpenTTD a freeform and done, we have a perfect game

OpenTTD is incredible for it's era, but as someone who was used to more modern games it's been an arkane experience. I get annoyed by how shallow Transport Fever 2 can feel, but I think it's obviously a spiritual successor to openttd. It's also been updated regularly since launch and has improved steadily. I do however think I want a Transport Fever 3, (technically this would be the 4th installment), but the game could really do with another major overhaul. More climates and more types of vehicles and also new types of vehicles. Airplanes feel so bad in the game and the industries could do with a more logical spawning algorithm where ore types are found near mountains and farms are found everywhere as well as having a more complex industry chain again. But it's still just so satisfying seeing the huge similarities between a modern game and one from the 90s and how feature complete TTD already was.

I only played OpenTTD between of these two. Vanilla OpenTTD was turning into a repetitive task. I was making challenges like "the longest coal line possible", or "flatten the whole map. Mods can make it more complicated, but there was a feeling of something lacking. I wonder if TF2 might be more interesting for me. From what you said, I feel like it may also feel a bit lacking.

I play both. Has Master Hellish ever played simutrans? Cant find anythin on YT at least. Would be a very interesting comparison to OpenTTD and/or TF2. But I think its also very unpopular and sits more in a niche than OpenTTD and TF2 together :D Greetings and keep on the nice video, very enjoyable!!

Don't know much about Transport fever game. I like OpenTTD retro graphics and can enjoy it on cheap smartphone. In openttd we are able to make or modify existing scripts or newgrfs. Town growth? im using City Controller script modified by myself to looks like a part of FIRS. Btw options in Trains order list like: Time Table and Conditional order jump solved my own huge problems!. I love OpenTTD.

i bought the original Transport Fever because it promised a modern upgrade for everything that Transport Tycoon (a game i loved) did, however those promises were lies actually and the game was pretty disappointing. and then TF2 dropped, with all the content promised but not delivered in the first game, and the devs expected everyone to just cough up the cash another time for the same product we had already paid for!? no thanks. i find that the best modern train game is actually Factoio! it has excellent signaling, path finding, and logic, handles vast sprawling rail networks ease, building is fast & easy, there is even an economy (of sorts... not cash, but instead limitations of material production & resources). also the cost & efficiency of every station & junction is down to the skill of the player, because the player gets to design everything! Factorio 2 (a free upgrade btw) also included new tools that allow the player to create a many-to-many train network, where trains can dynamically be called to collect any cargo type from any station to then deliver anywhere! its incredibly satisfying when everything just works!
