I hope that you can also create a four-ISP tutorial consisting of three fiber ISPs that can fail over and balance load simultaneously and in the event that all three of the Fibr connections are completely down, the fourth ISP will be triggered as a limited metered connection ISP for failover. This configuration is extremely useful for critical internet-dependent applications setups including homebased jobs and etc...

And both routers are running OpenWRT, right? Let say the 1st router's LAN is 192.168.1.1 and the 2nd is 192.168.2.1, we have the below plan (wired connection). 1. Create a new VLAN from one of the LAN port and assign a static IP for it (DHCP off for this interface). Assign it to the LAN firwall zone. Doing the same for the other router. For example, Router 1, port LAN 4, static IP 192.168.9.1. Router 2, port LAN 4, static IP 192.168.9.2 2. Connect 2 router with the cable (port LAN 4) 2. Create a static route The other way, you can create a site to site VPN tunnel (over the internet) which will be much more slower.

Very good video! It would be fine if you could do a video about how to fine tune the multi wan setup. E.g. if I like to have as short time between the switch to the secondary WAN or if I like to have a load balancing multi WAN setup. There are several different tuning that can be done and I do not know how to do. So please explain!

Hey, thanks for the comment. There are tutorials about multiwan load balancing in my channel, please check it out. You can change the value for "how much fail ping the interface will be marked as down" in the mwan3 interface configuration and it can create the delay as you wish. For other additional tunning, please read the mwan3 documention from openwrt. My tutorials are mostly for beginner who want to have a demonstration on how to setup and have the package works. For advance tutorials, I am not that level yet. Maybe some day in the future.

I am not really understand your question, your WAN and LAN subnet should be different, what do you mean by "takes the incoming ip to the wan and not the LAN ip". Of course if you set the WAN interface to DHCP client, it will receive an IP address from the router where it is connected to.

Good work! Just a correction: according to the mwan3 doc: "Members with same metric will distribute load based on this weight value". So, setting a weight of 1, 2, or any number for that matter is meaningless since it does nothing on single-member (failover, no load-balanced) policies.

Hello, thank you so much for this fantastic video ! I tried to study mwan3 openwrt wiki and didn't manage to figure out what to do. Now it's clear ! I have one question: you assigned two different VLANs for wan und wanb. Is it important that it's different ? I plan to have two wans with PPPoE, and my ISP requires that WAN ist tagged VLAN7. I probably get two contracts from the same ISP, so both have to have tagged VLAN7. Is it going to work ? I have Rasberry Pi 4 with OpenWRT with SG108PE, set up as suggested in your other video.
@martaasaeda3 жыл бұрын
I am replying to this by myself: it looks like VLANs do have to be different. This means, if ISP requires a specific VLAN tagged, then you would want a Modem that takes care of it (or a router). Specifically, if one wants to use mwan3 for two Deutsch Telekom contracts, then you can use VLAN7 only once, so you can't have two modems that demands WAN interface on OpenWRT to be VLAN7. However, I currently have only one contract. I set up mwan3 and swapped the connection to see if both of them work: one with a modem, one with a router. I gave VLAN7 to the interface to connect with modem, VLAN8 for the router (since the router send the packet with VLAN7 to Telekom). Then it worked.

Avoid using same tracking addresses for wan1 and wan2, it might cause problems as those addresses will be set as static routes internally for those wans. Use different IPs for tracking Wan1 and Wan2.
@VanTechCorner4 жыл бұрын
Actually you set the 2nd interface as always online (no tracking) since we only failover in 1 way.
@arigasanks4 жыл бұрын
@@VanTechCorner I see. I've never done it on OpenWRT, I'm used to do it on pfsense and routeros, decided to check how it works on OpenWRT and found it strange when you set the same tracking IP for both interfaces as it would not work properly on those systems I mentioned before. How would you deal with 3 Wan failover?
@VanTechCorner4 жыл бұрын
I get your point, but this mwan3 tracking is different from tracking method on Cisco IOS (which I have worked with, I have no idea on pfSense). According to the document, mwan3 is triggered by hotplug-events. When an interface comes up, it creates a custom routing table and iptables rules. A new routing table is created for each interface. It then sets up iptables rules and uses iptables MARK to mark certain traffic. Based on these rules, the kernel determines which routing table to use. When an interface goes down, mwan3 deletes all the rules and routes to that interface. Once all the routes and rules are initially set up, mwan3 exits. The kernel takes care of all the routing decisions. If a new interface hotplug event occurs, mwan3 will run again to adjust route and tables as needed. You can check it out here: openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/multiwan/mwan3 I have never seen 3 WAN failover, but we surely can do that. Just create the 3rd interface with metric 30. Create a new mwan3 Memeber with metric 3 weight 3 and assign it to the 3rd interface. Lastly, add the new Memeber to the Policy and it should work.
