You must listen to Pontiff Sulyvahn’s theme. He’s the main bad guy of the game and his theme reflects that. It’s really complex with my layers it sounds so harrowing and cold. Especially the way the start builds up as he’s watching you across from the church. Not taking a step till you approach him he’s really that guy.

gundyr is an underrated boss. also i love the fact that he basically decides if you are worthy of playing the game or not as if u cant beat him u cant even continue playing the game 😂 edit: i also just learned that iudex means "judge" in latin. on dark souls wiki it says: "Iudex is Latin for "judge" and Gund is the old Germanic word for battle. This is an apt name for this boss as it guards the Coiled Sword and judges who is worthy to proceed to Firelink Shrine and bring the Lords of Cinder to their thrones." what a great detail.

The way he never really retreats or show any sign of resistance or cowardice, but instead always slowly, fearlessly lumbers towards the player, planning his next attack. Especially 6:24 really feels like the forward marching of gundyr's robust presence. and the sheer threat he carries with each strike. really cool track.

Final boss and I believe he was also supposed to have been where Champion Gundyr was placed in the end. I nearly had Pontiff on my first attempt, but I badly mistimed a heal and then had the usual FromSoftware problem of many more failed attempts that never got so close. I didn't even get to phase 2 again until the attempt when I actually finally killed him. I'm trash at parries, so after failing at that I just two-handed the Hollowslayer Greatsword and kept on the move. I still nearly died a few times and just managed to get lucky with my dodges and heals. I don't want to imagine what he could have been like as a final boss.

He was too early or late to link the flame as a champion and impaled himself with the coiled sword to become the judge for whoever would try to next. Then his champion fight is some sort of parallel to the regular Firelink Shrine, but it's more speculation than proven if it's before your time or an alternative to it. All the thrones exist and would suggest it as a time Ludleth didn't yet step in for necessity of his people, and Lothric was next destined to. To add to that topic, the sword was broken in the Untended version, suggesting it as a possible variant of the worse. A glimpse if you would in what the world could be reduced to if the fire maiden was given Sulyvahn's black cursed eyes of the Abyss like his servants and Lorian. Little wonder can be made if this is how Sulyvahn convinced Lothric the curse of the cycle and enclosed off Firelink with this illusion in it's exact same place. With light and dark, the way in which the world appears is subjective and convoluted and so too would time. When Filianore's spell is undone, the truest time and fate is before us, beyond the age of the Soul of Cinder awaiting for someone to claim lordship. Not only one's worthiness, but the fickleness of time and place alone would stop many from the fate of a Lord of Cinder.
@Loafusbreadmyre2 жыл бұрын
The strange black mass of a creature that springs from Gundyr is known as the Pus of Man, which is described as The Abyss given shape, infesting the humanity (which is a semi-tangible thing in the world of dark souls) of someone and exploding outward like a violent parasite. I envision the chaotic change to the music halfway through indicating the Pus of Man taking gundyr over as the wounds you cause him start to weaken him. This is also an interesting thing to include in the very beginning of the game, as similar creatures (or rather, undead infested with these creatures) show up occasionally throughout the game. It's a first look at how even the, though tragic, grandiose people with positions of importance have been eaten away by the very nature of the world, falling apart at its seams, begging for the dark. And in some, like Iudex Gundyr, the dark manifests as a vicious monster.

My brother is going through Dark Souls 3 right now (resuming after 10 months, left off after Pontiff) and just yesterday he fought Champion Gundyr which he had some trouble on, he often gets upset if he can’t beat a boss soon and he loses confidence so I helped through co-op and he had a blast. The reason why I bring this up is because, the other day, he had beaten The Dancer in 3 attempts, THREE attempts and it’s weird seeing Champion Gundyr being a brick wall and not Dancer. He did play through Elden Ring (with a little of my help) so perhaps he got better but still. I recently replayed the game and Gundyr is a dope fight both, but mostly the Champion version, the music adds so much to the fight and something about the chorus(s) that stirs something in me when I hear it during the fight and even out of it. Cool reaction I can’t wait for the next.

This theme is interesting because you don’t see a lot of people talk about it, but for a first boss theme, it’s so grand and intense. I think people who got to DS3 just expected that “epic” sound even for first boss fights by that point. It was normal by that point. Anyway, nonetheless…I love this theme. I listen to my Soulsborne playlist more these days, but I went through a phase where the DS3 soundtrack was all I listened to. I would put it on during study or work sessions and just blast every song. This one was always a welcome opener for the boss theme section. I even used it to practice violin at times by playing along with the chugging strings. So, while it’s not one of the “greats” among Soulsborne tracks, it’s definitely a beautiful and exciting song. I love it. Oh and, by the way…there are no actual lyrics in the DS3 songs. They just chant Latin syllables, so those lyrics were fan made. I mean, they’re cool and they sum up the story, but yeah…it’s definitely just syllable chanting we hear in these songs.

I think Gundyr is probably the best tutorial boss of a FromSoftware game. He's not optional and he's not one you have to die to to progress in the game. Demon's Souls expects the player to die to its tutorial boss. The Asylum Demon of Dark Souls 1 is too easy if you beat him the proper way once you get your weapons and do that plunging attack. Iudex Gundyr shows the player some of what to expect. He's fast, but not too fast. The Abyss Watchers are the first boss to show the player that enemies are going to get faster (looking at Sister Friede who is almost too fast for a Dark Souls enemy). Champion Gundyr then shows the player how that fight really should have gone. What I love about the Champion fight is that his phase 2 is him just opening his eyes and going even faster. However, if the player has been parrying enemies, Champion Gundyr can be handled effectively with parries similarly to how Gwyn can be handled with parries. Also, the same theme is used for both fights. When fighting Champion Gundyr the music seems to fit better because he's so fast and it becomes quite a frantic sort of fight to stay alive and just to find to to heal up. He's very good at interrupting heals (sort of: oh, you want to drink? Here, let me kick it down your throat for you) and the timing for it is tricky as he's very good at closing the distance before the player can react in time.

I remember not having any trouble with Iudex Gundyr in the tutorial. Champion Gundyr killed me once and oh boy howdy, was it a doozy of a combo. He charges me with the halberd, I dodge perfectly thinking there's no way he could get me. Gundyr 180's and launches me in the air, then kicks me before I hit the ground. Right as I get up, Gundyr rushes forward, and roundhouse kicked me. Right off the stage. I took a hearty gulp (about 6-8 shots) of Johnny Walker and tried again, scraping by the skin of my teeth with Estus to spare.

As far as I'm aware, there aren't lyrics to any of the music in Dark Souls 3 specifically. The music was done mostly with synthesizers (apart from when Yuka Kitamura would occasionally break out her violin). Any lyrics you might be hearing are likely just gibberish created by the synthesizers. Fun fact though, this is the only track in the game made by Tsukasa Saitoh who does more stuff for Bloodborne and Elden Ring I believe.

The lyrics would be fitting given this is the intro boss for Dark Souls 3

First time meeting Gundyr is essentially your vibe check, if you cant vibe, you're likely better off not playing DS3 or get better to get past him. *_Second_* time you meet Gundyr, you're in for a bad time because he's up, hes angry, and he absolutely does not like you and he will elbow and dropkick you across the arena if you're not ready, and he turns that spear round *_Q U I C K_*

I was always under the impression that the "lyrics" to DS3's OST was created by some form of auto-tune. It's meant to accentuate the harmony or discord of whatever the orchestra is doing.

Do you remember the Epilogue track? So bittersweet. If the Nameless Song could be considered a reward for finishing the first Dark Souls, I'd consider Epilogue a reward for finishing 3. This? This is a guy who's so tired, he wants to end his torment, but his duty won't allow him to. When we first meet Gundyr, he's a shell, tired and broken. I'd say the first half of the song fits Iudex better, while the second half fits the Champion. The second half is a bit more hurried (I'm drawing a blank for a better word). Combine that with how merciless the Champion is in his second stage, it's almost as if he's taking his rage from failing his duty out on you.

There is an alt version of Gundyr if you haven't fought it before called Champion Gundyr, which gives me a feeling that the alt version is Gundyr at his/their prime and the version we fight at the start of the game is a weakened, mutated husk of who they once was

I think "Iudex" means "Judge" so in a way, he judges if the Ashen One is worthy to start his/hers journey, by having to defeat him.

Have you heard of a game called Furi? I'd love to see what you think of its music. My personal favourite track is Wisdom of Rage by Waveshaper, but I think the entire soundtrack is exceptional. They are definitely not what I would call classical music though. More synthwave, I think is the term.

It's not like it's a good track beyond the main part, but when you're fighting the 2nd ver (Champion Gundyr) and 7:19 comes on and you've yet to kill him for some reason, the fight literally becomes terrifying

Well iudex means judge. So he is an adjudicator. And this is your trial. Your test. To see if you're worthy to attempt to even link the flame.

Iudex Gundyr isn't my favorite track on the OST, but it's the one I find to be the most underrated. Your comment about it speaking of desperation in a sense is pretty accurate. Gundyr was unkindled same as you. Unkindled wake up as a last resort to find a champion to link the fire and save the world from darkness, but Gundyr woke up too late to do it and failed at his task. He was a champion meant to become a lord, but instead woke up to a world filled with darkness. And there he stayed in that graveyard to forever test other unkindled to make sure that they are strong enough to do what he failed to do. By the time that you encounter him, he has been there for an entire age and he is a shadow of his former self, infected by the abyssal puss of man (the black writhing stuff) from his time spent in darkness. His strong will has kept it at bay until he's pushed to his limits from fighting you. I think this is represented by those clashing rhythms you mentioned. Also, you may remember me as the "request Lilium once a day" person, but I decided to stop that pretty fast. I don't wanna put any pressure on you and somebody pointed out that you mainly check out video game music. Though that song remains something I really wanna see you react to, you do your own thing.
