Yeah, I remember watching this when I was 10 years old, as I know Bing Crosby died from a massive heart attack while playing golf about a month after taping this Christmas special (it was taped in September 1977). NBC stated it was the Crosby family gave a thumbs up for the station to air the Christmas Special that December of that year. A lot of big stars died that year including Elvis Presley (August 16, 1977).

Peace on Earth was written especially for Bowie to sing with Bing for this performance. Peace on earth didn't exist before the conceptual duet of Bing and Bowie. I believe that David Bowie first saw the music for peace on Earth the day of this performance.

I believe I heard/read somewhere that Bowie hated the song "Little Drummer Boy" which is why they included Peace on Earth

Within an hour of DB stating that he hated LDB and didn't think it would showcase his voice, he and Bing had written the POE part of the song as counterpoint for DB to sing and they then spent 20 mins rehearsing it together and then shot this...POE was only a matter of hours old and it was wrapped...history made right there on the fly

On an Osmonds Christmas special in I think 1983 or 84, Frederica von Stade, an opera singer, sang this with (I believe it was) Hal Linden who was on TV around then as Barney Miller. Slightly different vibe to their version of it -- I very clearly remember Hal singing the Little Drummer Boy part, and showing such pride in his face and voice in the line "I played my BEST for Him!" Bing really underplays it here, and lets David be the louder one. I love both versions -- wish I could find a video of the version with Frederica von Stade and Hal Linden.

Good God, how can you be a singer, any type of singer, and not know Bing Crosby was the original singer of White Christmas. Also, the Julliard thing is wearing a little thin, Morgan James was Julliard trained and never once have I heard her toot her horn about it. Merry Christmas!

Being that I have never heard of Bing Crosby until now and with there being hundreds of covers of White Christmas, including my own, I never knew that he was the original singer. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, sorry you are upset by my talking about Juilliard, however, being that I am currently studying at Juilliard, pursuing my THIRD degree, graduating soon, and it’s the basis of what I discuss on my channel, I will continue to talk about it without feeling any kind of shame about it. 😊 Morgan graduated in 2003…. That’s over 20 years ago. I assume that in 20 years when I am over 40 years old, I will also no longer be “tooting my horn” about my Juilliard training, but in the meantime, I will be as loud and as proud as I choose on my channel. I earned it after being accepted 3 times to the greatest arts school in the world and completing 8 whole years of study in such a rigorous and prestigious environment…. I'm having a hard time absorbing she didn't know David Bowie. Its like not knowing The Beatles, especially being a singer herself. FYI, this was a Christmas special on American tv in 1977. Cosby died not long after and Bowie went on to be one of the most influential names in music. FYI.2.0, Howie was married to the supermodel Iman.
