My family and I traveled multiple times to the city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. It is a city rich in history and really holds down its name as being located within the most visited country in the entire Caribbean. As much as I can go on listing its many unique attributes, I cannot ignore what I witnessed happening throughout the pier of Santo Domingo, known as the Malecon.
It was a heavy toll on the eyes to have seen an endless supply of waste and garbage thrown on the shore being sucked into the ocean. The sight, smell, sound of plastic bottles hitting up against one another as it washes up on the sand was more than disappointing. As beautiful and gorgeous as the Malecon appears to be, it is all overshadowed by the pollution invading it. I could not believe everyone just continued to run and walk by the pier without even a turn of the head or a face of shock. It got me thinking that this has probably been going on for a very long time.
I take an in depth look on this pollution crisis, trying to find out how it all started, what can be done to solve this, and who could help solve this issue. This is not just a matter of an unsettling site, but a problem that affects animals, marine life, and the sustainability of our planet of which we share.
