The "alte Burgthearer", where many of Mozart's works were premiered was demolished long time ago and its site is currently occupied by a wing of the Hofburg palace complex (the imperial palace and the government center of the Habsburg empire). Surprisingly, the rest of that environment is still very much intact. The new, much bigger and really beautiful new theater was built at a different site. At the time of Mozart Vienna was one of, or maybe the most important center of the world of music. It had several other theaters, including the short living Wiednertheater, where the Magic Flute premiered. This was a huge building and intended to serve commoners and less affluent people. It has also been demolished very long time ago. However, Don Giovanni was first played in Prague and that theater building still exists, although with some modifications.

Sadly most do not realise that they are singing in English as indeed others do in the operatic performances. The little snippet at the end showing Salieri reliving the triumph of Axur, re d'Ormus with Father Vogler looking on in bewilderment is really quite touching. The really sad thing is Mozart wanted to compose Operas, but unlike symphonic and chamber instrumental music, Opera composition requires a sponsor and commission. As Mozart was the first freelance musician trying to make it without patronage, he had difficulty getting to write more. And just as he was getting famous enough to be able to get commissions from Opera houses directly, he died. Imagine if instead of around 10 mature Mozart Operas, we have say 25 of them. The World of Opera really missed out on more compositions from people like Mozart, Bizet, Gershwin, Bellini. Just thinking about it makes me feel really sad.

The way I explain Mozart and Salieri to my children is, it's like The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Beatles music just keeps going on and on and it is endless, it will keep going long after I'm dead. The Rolling Stones as good as they are they will eventually fade that is Salieri. To be fair that is most music nowadays.
