Had my first experience with a switcher attaching, & detaching cars at 17. My mom hauled containers at this small port, & got it arranged for my birthday. Fast forward several years, & now I'm in the field running freight for a major carrier, & been doing so for 17 years. The work is unlike any other, & I like being part of the action, the life style is something else at times. I always enjoy seeing others light up around trains, & seeing their expressions the first time doing something unique like operating a locomotive. I will say it's a lot more extensive pulling cars, working on a grade, knowing the laundry list of rules to follow, but here you the basics, & to have fun doing it. Oh yah btw in America your not driving a train, your operating or running a train.

I miss running those things and getting paid for it. We had a former SP GP9 at one job I worked. It had it's problems, but still. Very cool video.

Once we had a KGR issue with a GP9. We kept chasing our tail. Out on the fast track my boss put the unit in throttle 8 with GF off then flipped her up. Sparks flew out of 2 traction motors going down the track. That thing took off like a rocket...

Lucky people :) I booked it last fall, but when I got there, they had it in maintenance with batteries out. I offered to buy a set ) But I got to operate two other toys. I wish they had a longer track - it is a shame to have all that power to control and not being able to go into 5th position.

Sweet! I ran the Fairbanks Morse Trainmaster while I was there in the mid '90's. I got to ride around on lots of GP-9s and other fun stuff during my one year time with the BNSF in '02 - '03. Sadly, they're all gone now.

Not all gone! The shortline near my home (Southern Railway of British Columbia) has around 8 GP9's still hard at working. Also saw another one in the interior of the province with a shortline that runs out of a wood mill.
