One correction: We did fly those birds but only at night to avoid detection. We had 9 aboard the ship and one was constantly canabalized for spare parts. Those birds had to fly regularly to ensure they'd be flight ready should the word come down. We were just returning from a deployment with the Canadians for several months when we received word "Don't unpack, go get your gear" by the duty officer as countless C5's pulled up to the ramp. We received TDY orders for 30 days, told our family's "see you soon" and promptly dropped off the planet. By the time we launched in late April, the squadron had been at sea continuously for just over 180 days. I know, because I was there. To those valiant members we lost, R.I.P. you will not be forgotten.

Question --- EVERY account I've read said those birds sat underneath for a TON of time until vought and kyle raised cain and said start flying them so they will be ready and the kinks will be worked out ?
@TSeck9112 жыл бұрын
@@irvinkiblerjr972 We flew a regular schedule as much as we could. The carrier was shadowed by soviet trawlers or under constant watch by satellites overhead. IF those birds sat for a TON of time, they wouldn't have made the mission.

I have always thought that one day that Hollywood would make a movie about the The Desert One operation since it was such a noble effort.

No matter how you like at it, these brave pilots & soldiers that survived were fortunate. They survived the incompetence in planning, the lack of weather knowledge, the atrociously expensive toy helicopters, the apparent rush by the would-be hero officers to stardom. Even today, I fear our military would not survive any enemy attack. And of course, even with the trillions spent each year on the military & contractors, they'd have the least trained & most vulnerable National Guard kids go in first. Having survived the fun & games of the Vietnam era, I know.

as possible for a normal person without access to confidential information. In my opinion, the biggest reason for the failure of this operation was the complexity and difficulty along with some bad luck. If Delta had reached Tehran, it would probably have succeeded. In Tehran at that time, there was very little possibility of organized resistance, and Delta was facing an untrained amateur enemy. The harsh and unpredictable nature of Iran's deserts is a terrible thing, and even with today's technology, it cannot be crossed with confidence, and the helicopter, despite its interesting capabilities, is a vulnerable device. Taking the members of the embassy hostage was a stupid thing that was done by a few students and unfortunately there was no common sense in the government at that time and basically there was no logical reason to be hostile towards America and anyway America was not hostile towards Iran and this whole story that until Even today, it was the plan of the Soviets, which in fact caused a lot of damage to Iran throughout history, and that is why the common people of Iran hate the Russians. I hope peace and friendship between Iran and America will happen soon.

I heard a rumor that a US soldier was left behind and had to leave the country under cover.

This was too dangerous a task for an inexperienced hostage rescue team to attempt. Although the operation ended early and in tragedy it was doomed to fail. Had they made it to Tehran an absolute disaster would have unfolded with the undoubted loss of the rescue team, possibly dozens of civilians killed and the hostage’s lives placed in still more dangerous circumstances. The soldiers were simply not capable of carrying out such a dangerous mission so far inside hostile territory.

Hey Grant, sorry about the audio quality. This meeting was done through Zoom so the presenter was calling in on his cell phone.

@@milspec_tube No problem and thanks for the explanation - I totally understand. These days it's great that we have things like Zoom and Skype - especially with the Coronavirus situation. At the moment my work in Russia is (or I'm trying to do it....) all by mobile, Whatsapp and Zooom - and I can't really see that changing anytime soon...Operation Eagle Claw is an interesting subject and I will get around to watching the video in full this weekend.

Personally I don’t believe that. I get the sense that the combination of branch sword swinging, the lack of sharing and communication between the branches, Carter’s insistence on pushing forward the mission, and it’s overall ridiculous complexity with all its moving parts doomed it from the start. Not to mention that those helos didn’t appear to be equipped enough to handle the sand storms that they were to encounter
@tseck13483 жыл бұрын
Not true. There were representatives from all branches of the service who joined together to make the attempt. This thing was doomed from the very start. WAY too complicated and too many moving parts with tools that were never intended to function in this environment. To all that participated in this valiant effort, Kudos for having the guts to try (title of a book) and had it not been for the accident, it may have got real close. RIP to those we lost.

It is frustrating to listen to this man give his presentation because for the audio, it is so bad and his strong southern accent doesn’t help either. A very frustrating presentation for the viewer. Viewer beware.
