Glad to know even the pros make dicey shots sometimes and the only resolution is to keep at it and go hunt a different buck in a different area. Persistence pays. Thanks Joe.

Congrats on a nice buck Joe! I’m also one of the guys who use an adjustable sight and I love it. It cured me. Luckily it wasn’t a monster buck.

Definitely differences in terrain in Ohio depending on where you go. Big woods steep hills, then you have the strip mined stuff which is more rolling and broken up. Then a lot of flat woodlots with no edge in central and north/west Ohio. One thing we don’t have is many swamps or wetlands like you guys in WI... unfortunately we drained them all!

I made the same mistake last week Joe on a 3yo buck quartering hard to me. Happened so quickly and I was hoping these new single bevel broadheads would twist itself into the boiler. While inspecting the (clean) arrow a deer grunted at me and sure enough, I look up with my headlamp and there's my buck looking at me at 15 yards like I'm a rival, grunting his head off at me.

Joe-love your stuff man. I almost feel like I’m playing hockey again with the boys when I hear some of the terminology. Question for you. I hunt a piece in Illinois at my buddy’s farm where 3 ridges come together in a bottom. 2 that run parallel to each other north facing and south facing and one that kind of runs perpendicular to them (east facing). There’s a ditch that runs in the saddle of all these ridges. I’m having a hard time finding a good wind because the bucks come from all directions. Do your thermals in the afternoon tend to flow down into the ditch? As in the deepest point
@joerentmeester71425 жыл бұрын
Mine were sucking down into the main "ditch" or draw that all the deer wanted to go into until the thermals started to pull up in the morning. Then at night they were sucking back down again at night and I could hear deer blowing down below. So depending upon time if year and if your hunting any deer or perhaps a Target buck, I would try to hit that in the mornings when the thermals are pulling up. Some spots you just can't hunt at certain times. Or depending upon how the bottoms lay out, try some sits down low and see if there is a little sweet spot where you can make your wind work down low

But it went in and hit, lungs, liver, diaphragm and I'm sure more, but those were the things I noticed. @MrShysterme5 жыл бұрын
Thank goodness you didn't seriously wound him. With a too high yardage pin, you will actually shoot close to point of aim at extremely close yardage due to the arc of the arrow and the arrow not rising much at short range. Try it yourself. Stand at 5 yards. Shoot your 20, 30, 40, and 50 yard pins dead on. They will all hit within inches of each other. Heck, you don't even need to shoot, just hold on the target and see how closely all your pins cluster around the kill. The maximum overshoot for any pin is right around half of it's yardage (give or take due to parallax and air resistance). I write this to help other archers because as they get closer, you don't hold lower and lower. I use a moveable pin and usually have it set at 25 yards. At 5 yards? I hold dead nuts on because it is so close. I would only compensate by holding a bit low at 12 to 17 yards (and not much and usually not at all because my bow shoots 300 fps). Everyone should do a walk back shoot with various pins and actually see the ballistics, it isn't totally intuitive.
@MrShysterme5 жыл бұрын
Airguns &rcs I know this seems like common sense to you but you are wrong. What you stated doesn’t address my point. Try what I said and shoot your 60 yard and other pins at very close yardage. You will see that at say 5 yards, all your pins hit very close to one another and that if close enough you will actually hit low. This is important to understand. I could do some math later to further underline this. My brother last year only had a 30 yard pin (a guy from his work dorked up his bow by setting the peep way too high). A deer walked out at 5 yards and he held low and promptly shot under it. An arrow shot at a 30 yard target with your 30 yard pin will be at its max vertical height a little past 15 yards. At point blank range, the arrow will strike below the target (pins are above arrow imagine a target right at end of bow). At some close yardage the 30 yard pin will be dead on as the arrow rises. Once you see this, it is incredibly obvious and I’m sorry you are having an issue seeing it and choose instead to assert I’m wrong using Incorrect reasoning. Technical rifle shooters routinely discuss what I am going over here. PS I taught projectile motion at the college level and can derive the equations from first principles quite easily.
@MrShysterme5 жыл бұрын
@Airguns &rcs Not that it matters (but since you threw in that you've been doing this for 17 years).....I've been bowhunting 30 years and an archer for 38 years and a STEM professional for 20 years and was a science professor for 5 years. Right is right and wrong is wrong, and I'm not into fallacious arguments from authority. You are wrong about projectile motion as guided by an elevated sight. It is an arc because you angle the arrow upward, giving it a positive velocity upward in reference to the ground. Eventually, gravity strips that velocity to zero and that is when the arrow is at the top of its arc. I understand what you are getting at but you are thinking of this incorrectly. Read more and try my experiment and you will see. A very positive trait in life is being open to being wrong and learning from others, start that now.
@MrShysterme5 жыл бұрын
@Airguns &rcs It doesn't matter if you use one or many pins in this regard. Each pin creates its own specific arc based upon the angle of elevation it sets. And we are not both correct, you are just not understanding my point and you think I am saying something I am not. Your retorts do not address my points. It seems you are hung up on the truism that an arrow dropped and an arrow shot perfectly horizontal will hit the ground at the same time. Also, I've heard some people say "a bullet starts dropping the moment it leaves the barrel", which is false because the barrel is nearly always angled upward, similar to you throwing a lobbed baseball. All of your pins will shoot low at point blank range. All of your pins will have a maximum vertical distance at somewhat past half the distance they are sighted in at. All of your pins will be dead on at some yardage less than the yardage it is sighted in at. It takes more complicated math to figure each of those at. For instance, it might be the case that your 20 yard pin is dead on at 5 yards and also 20 yards. If you would do some focused experimentation, then you would see that.
@MrShysterme5 жыл бұрын
@Airguns &rcs If you shoot at a target that is shoulder height (same height as arrow) and placed at 10 yards, then there is an arc. The arrow is pointed slightly upward. The arrow rest being level regarding the bow and string doesn't matter. You are creating the arc by the sight causing you to elevate the front of the arrow above the rear of the arrow. I am going to stop now because I see that I am not going to accomplish anything.
@MrShysterme5 жыл бұрын

David Gonzalez I’ve killed many with that same shot. You need to know what you’re doing. Joe knows what he’s doing. He might be young but he’s killed more quality bucks than many many watching these videos. He does it on public land too. @@Matt-de7eg thx for your reply Matt. I understand a deer anatomy. Have hunted 35 yrs with bow with quality bucks including several pope and young. If you are 10yrds or closer, that shot can work. David Gonzalez Hello David, just wanted to add something, Joe talks in the video about a friend that hunts in cattails on the ground, and takes frontal shots, I do this a lot, because on the ground in thick stuff it tends to lead to a lot of frontal situations. I have been hunting as long you have, I do frontal shots quite often, probably 20 yards and under, 55 pound bow, COC 560 grain arrow overall... so it’s not a matter of “if your ten yards and under it can work” there is much more going on - if your statement was correct then a lot of my bucks weren’t killed...if I was to look back at all my tracking jobs the frontal shots have been the shortest tracking jobs, If you have a heavy enough arrow your going length wise through the animal.... come on, ethical is what expires the animal best, and it doesn’t get any better then what happened to Joe in this video. Not everyone in the world hunts the same way, you coulda just said congratulations, great shot, that’s what I was gonna do, until I saw your comment..... SMH.
