This answered a lot of questions I had about nuclear blast effects. In particular, I was puzzled about survivor experiences in the book, "Hiroshima." Three of the survivors were about a mile from ground zero; three were from about two miles away. All were luckily shielded by an earthen or stone barrier. The ones a mile away had enough time to take one more step before the blast wave hit; the ones two miles away had enough time for 2-3 steps. That did not square with the speed of sound in normal air, but made sense in terms of heating effects.

The British did a similar test in Australia with P-51’s and Centurion tanks. The surviving aircraft were salvaged and at least one is still flying. At least one of the Centurions were later deployed to Vietnam.

@@anhedonianepiphany5588 According to other films of the time, the planes could be washed, cleaned up, turned around, and ready for action in 24 hours or less. I don't see why they would have been buried. The radioactivity was simply surface contamination, and could be washed away. No parts of the plane would have experienced induced radioactivity, because the plane wouldn't have been exposed to any neutrons. The contamination was all in the extremely thin layer of surface dust. It really wouldn't make sense to bury them.

To be fair, they didnt know about the cancer risk yet, just the imediate dangers of radiation, which indeed was benign during the testing. None of them died from accute radiation poisoning, but cancer deaths probbably racked up some serious count since then.

My father was one of the servicemen at the the Charlie Shot on 16 April 1952. It was the first time the servicemen went to ground zero and were only 3 1/2 miles from the blast. They were at least 7 miles away before. It was the first event televised nationally.
