A behind the scenes look at the production of Walt Disney's Alice In Wonderland. In BLACK AND WHITE! OOH!
Some weird man wants to find out how production on Alice In Wonderland is going. We see him enter the studio and given a tour by Walt Disney himself.
Storyboards, music, line readings, Alice actress doing homework, live-action rehearsals, multiplane cameras, and Walt riding the Lilly Belle steam train all in one!

Kathryn Beaumont is perfect as Alice. She's just so adorable, and her voice is so sweet and elegant! I really wish there were more clips of the live-action reference footage available for viewing. It's very fun to watch her act out the scenes with her co-stars.

Now see, THIS is what would be called "Disney Magic". The fact that they took people acting out their scenes as they voiced their performances for visual reference, then transcribed the facial expressions, body language, and lines spoken into fluid animation. Add onto that using props to create the sound effects as well! Using a variety of techniques to bring real life to an animated feature clearly took imagination, ingenuity, and thinking outside the box. Truly, these were the golden days of disney animation, that even with the most modern advances in computer technology to animate albeit great entries such as Inside Out and Zootopia, they are still a far cry from what Walt Disney Studios put into their work to bring Disney Magic to life! Sorry if this sounds like elitist nostalgia, I just find myself awestruck by how much work they put into behind the scenes here!
@binkyboy448

I can't even imagine how the animators were able to figure out how to time the frames per second perfectly with the voice acting and music. That is something I have always wondered about with animation.
@Marbles471
@Marbles471 4 жыл бұрын
Knowing that there are 24 frames per second of motion picture film is what guides the timing. The soundtrack was broken down into individual frames on special animators' charts that were called exposure sheets, and the action was planned to match, making sure that key points lined up correctly with their place on the track.

They use the voice audio & translate it into frames per second (24 on film). If you're dealing with dialogue or any music track, you can draw the action according to each vowel the character is speaking or the musical beats in the case of a pre-recorded music track. Usually the musical score (just like in live-action) is done afterwards, once the animation is finished. Animators figured this out thru trial & error, which is the key to any good artist's perfection of their craft.

We have time sheets for that. We calculate roughly how much time the action would take and write it down a time sheet. There's a lot of details on it like camera moves, BG, anim layers, SFX and sound/voice synchronizing. Everything is calculated before starting to animate because the timing and drawing count are very important to stay in-budget and have the wanted pace.

In the past few years I have been learning a great deal on film scoring and it's so funny to look back at this question I asked three years ago! Great explanation! I still think it is incredible what can be accomplished by the animators. The dialogue and musical numbers (songs) are pre-recorded, to be sure. The incidental score is what is recorded and added in afterwards. I am pretty sure you are aware of this, but I just wanted to make that distinction to anyone else who might be reading. :)
