I remember I was in Toronto before the pandemic and I was on a train, the conductor made a announcement saying they wouldn’t go any further from union station due to a accident, and later, I found out it was someone who decided to try to quickly get past a oncoming train, but he was hit

That biker treated that crossing just like he treated every road and traffic light. Believe me

I was filming trains down in Fresno, California today and watched a trespasser cross three active tracks just north of the BNSF yard there. People in our city get hit by trains all the time and it’s ridiculous. It should not be happening! But it does.

Literally the day after I posted this, a woman was hit and killed at a crossing that I frequently film. From the news stories, it sounds like she heard the bells and although this was a no-horn zone, I'm sure the engineer sounded the horn at the last minute. It's very sad that this happens so frequently in our city, for the victims and families but especially for the engineers and conductors who have to live with this.

@@BrokenFootRailfan Those no train horn crossings scare the hell out of me. I always stop and look. I don't trust the signals.

I was a locomotive engineer (driver) here in Ballarat Victoria Australia for 34 years and I had 3 fatalities in my career one unfortunately was a family of Four that crossed an un protected level crossing in rural Victoria after the last accident I had a breakdown and was medically retired😭😭😭

some people don't realize the power of a locomotive, and they don't realize that they cant stop like a car or a bus.

Absolutely. It can take a train more than a mile to come to a complete stop. When I hear stories about people getting struck by a train, it makes me angry and sad at the same time. Angry because the person didn’t think, and wait until the gates go up, and the train has passed. Sad because this causes a tragedy for the person’s family, and puts a lot of stress on the engineer. If only people would take a moment to notice the crossing gates and the lights, there would be less stress on families and train engineers

@@JohnAckerman31the issue isn’t that they don’t know. Everyone and their mother has probably heard of how high train momentum is. The issue is that they think they’re the exception and can just run faster.

Being a train engineer is a very stressful job. I’m not an engineer myself, but I do hear stories and see things on TV that are just horrific. When I hear stories about a person being struck by a train, I feel angry and sad at the same time. When you see the gates are down and the lights are flashing, wait until the train has passed before you move on. It doesn’t make sense to put your life at risk and try to beat a train. You’re going to lose. I always say remember the three L’s. Look, Listen, Live

Every "railfan" needs to hear this story..especially about the bicyclist. The human factor is the lifetime scars these engineers bear. Lifetime. Respect the Rails. Respect the Railroaders.

I’m a railroader as well as a rail fan and I live right by the Rochelle Railroad Park and I frequent there quite a bit. It boggles my mind that there are so many “rail fans” that are just so ignorant to how trains actually operate and how dangerous the equipment can be of safety is not your number 1 concern all the time. I see them right on the tracks as a train is coming to get that “perfect shot”. I feel that to be a rail fan, the number one thing that should be on your mind is safety. Don’t stand to close to the tracks, don’t stand on the tracks, observe the train from a safe distance. It’s about respect for the equipment as well as respect for the hardworking men and women that operate the trains as well.
