@jebbroham1776

It was Manstein's brilliant counter-stroke from late February to mid March that saved the Southern Front from total collapse. He reacted with a speed and boldness that completely blindsided the Soviet Army and regained the initiative. My great uncle fought in the Third Battle of Kharkov during that counter-offensive as a panzergrenadier in 2nd SS Panzer, and his diary that survived the war describes a truly remarkable battle for the city. It was desperate, ferocious, and exhausted his division, but they were successful in driving the Soviets out of the city and pushing some distance eastwards after their victory there. I believe that he could sense the futility of their efforts though even in early 1943, before Germany's position was truly hopeless, because he wrote in an addition to a March 19th entry that they had achieved " victory with fleeting chance of ultimately decisive results".

@@jebbroham1776 wow that's super cool you should maybe post some of that diary in a video. Perhaps with you or someone else reading it and narrating. It sounds like a unique look into an intriguing, but not often explored, part of the war. Most historians like to say the outcome was not in doubt by then anymore. Its interesting to know that troops, even elite like 2nd SS Panzer, could see the writing on the wall.

you also don't hear much about the recent Donbas conflict in late February 2022 at the start of SMO from the western media. the news was presented as if Putin decided to invade Ukraine out of the blue, not because Donetsk and Luhansk needed Russia's help to deal with the imminent Ukrainian threat. no mention that Kiev refused to ratify the Minsk 2 agreement and instead had build up its military strength to crush the separatists.

Interestingly, we can see similarities in the Ukrainian and Russian approach in the sense that they both attempted big encirclements at first(Sieverodonetsk for Russia, the border of the Donbas for Ukraine) and eventually drew them down to be smaller and smaller in scale. Well, most of the generals of Ukraine and russia were taught at soviet military academies. Considering, that in 2014 both sides didn`t have enough war experience and didn`t move from soviet-style doctrines, they fought with the same base knowledge. Ukraine and russia had to adapt if they wanted to win. Sadly for russians, their corrupted military couldn`t be easily reformed. Military top command didn`t feel the need for new tactics or new methods in warfare(which they badly needed, since small usage of recoinassance drones and poor artillery coordination made russian army much vulnerable to professional opponent) and supporters for the reforms were in the minority. Also, big difference made NATO instructors, which were working with UAF command after 2014. Their knowledge of modern warfare allowed Ukraine to modernise their army much faster and better

Urban warfare is always the most difficult terrain to fight in. It takes away many advantages an attacker might have and gives them to the defender. The urban environment is multi-demensional, with rooftops, cellars, and tight streets creating many different types of killing zones. I can see why this area of Ukraine is so difficult to overcome.

@@adamnevraumont4027 because there is still a difference between Russia’s limited intervention at the time and current full confrontation. The point is not that whether Russia sent regular troops or manpower in 2014. There is almost no doubt about that. Even Russia back then admitted the existence of ‘volunteers’. However, they were still reinforcements in their extent. Otherwise, Ukraine would have lost all of the Donbas in 2014. Pro-Ukrainian opinions tend to overemphasise Russia’s role at the expense of pro-Russian separatists. It’s more comfortable to subscribe to a narrative of self-defence against an external aggressor than being torn by the idea that Ukraine was suppressing an independence movement. But the reality is in-between. I would rather prefer the framing used in this video than those popular framings that always prefer narrative orientated designations to nuances

Allright, good analysis. Thank you. FEB 1943 Well, as I view it, the symptomatic problem about the 1943 Red Army offensive, is first and foremost its weak northwestern flank. However, its fundamental, problem, is its attempt, to develop too many operations at the same time. Just as it attempted to do, this very year, in FEB 2022. Simply put; too much divergence. No real convergence. In both cases, Moscow created complexity, instead of simplicity, for its troops. Irresponsible leadership. FEB - JUNE 2014 It's partly the same problem with the Ukrainian army, in 2014. It too had too many diverging operations. It too, wanted to do too many different things, at the same time. This lack of convergence is the real creator of the border unit crisis. Not the Russian weapons.

A constant reminder of "X outnumbered Y" seems very important as the difference between approaches fails or works. Could you explain the specific terrain features that hinder advance through Donbas. Usually the steppe is considered good for advance
@extrahistory8956
@extrahistory8956 Жыл бұрын
It's less about the natural geography of the region and more the large amount of artificial obstacles created by the urban development in the region. Even then, the relatively flat steppes pose a problem if you don't have proper air supremacy, since the enemy has an easier time spotting your troops and attacking with anything it has.
@Michaelonyoutub
@Michaelonyoutub Жыл бұрын
Urban areas are literal concrete jungles, offering the perfect cover and fortifications for troops, while also offering unparalleled mobility due to the infrastructure, should the area be under one side's full control. In this region the steppe has been paved over and urban areas dominate the landscape. You cant advance through an area when there could be an entire brigade hiding in a single building a block away which could harass your lines and potentially cut you off. Armies need to clear out such threats before advancing, slowing them down, giving their enemies time to regroup and to setup more fortification
@ethank5059
@ethank5059 Жыл бұрын
To add to what others have said Eastern European cities are coincidentally designed so as to basically be fortresses for modern warfare. Large concrete apartment structures mean a potential ambush can come from any level and the defender of the city will always have the high ground. It also means clearing large buildings room by room and fighting up narrow stair cases. Concrete buildings also mean that simply spraying the structure with fire from outside won't necessarily kill the defenders and even if the building is destroyed fighting through a maze of rubble and ruined buildings is sometimes even harder. If you want to look at other examples of how difficult urban warfare is look at the battle of Mosul, Fallujah, Aleppo, Grozny or the siege of Sarajevo.

After watching this series it's making me wonder if this current Russian strategy of a broad front attack is the correct solution. Rather than big thrusts and attempts at encirclement that carry a high risk of getting bogged down and being cut-off, you aim to winkle the enemy out of its positions across a broad front in an attempt to collapse section of the front to force the enemy to withdraw. This is a war of supply lines and indirect fire, you try to salami slice the front. If you look at the position of the front lines in the donbass they have shown a slow steady progress, I remember people joking that it could take years to take the donbass, it looks like they could be right.

If the Russian leadership had not been stupid from the very beginning of the war, and had begun to fight seriously, then it would have been possible to take the Donbass even in the summer. It was necessary to mobilize in the spring, destroy the bridges on the Dnieper River in order to disrupt the supply, and so on. However, in the summer, as a result of the Ukrainian mobilization, the ratio of forces in the infantry was 3 to 1, and in September it reached 5 to 1. In such conditions, take the industrial zone Donbass is impossible in principle. Infantry can defend in cities for a very long time.

A fun fact about the troops in Ilovaisk. When they were encircled they were told to surrender their weapons and they would be granted a corridor to leave. Upon doing so the Russians opened fire on the now defenseless soldiers and killed most of them in the corridor.

It definitely won’t be easy for Ukraine to take back the entire Donbas region. Encircling it probably isn’t viable. Probably the best way to take it militarily from how I see it is to pull a similar move the Soviets pulled in 1943 by drawing away enemy units from the area. One way I could see this happening is if Ukraine cuts off the Crimean land bridge, which would force Putin to make a choice of what he wants to keep more… the Donbas region, or Crimea.

And it was an interesting perspective on the 2014 conflict review, albeit some folks down here are arguing about some of details. I wonder, though, what were the sources you used when making this video? Or, at least, what kind of sources did you use? It would be great if you shared such information with viewers.

TL;DR: Not correct to say that there was separatist in the Donbas region. And here is why: 1. russian-speaker of most of Ukraine was the result of the planned russification of Ukrainians and minor communities. 2. On Donbas was no separatist before russia sent GRU under colonel Girkin/Strelkov. 2.1. Donbas was controlled by the Party of Regions from ~2000 up to 2014, including media and others. They built the idea of "Donbas as a special region" to gain more support and political power to grub more money. Real "separatist" from folks who lived in Donbas in 2014 was no more than exists right now in East Germany. By the way, hello from Kyiv, also from folks that lived in Donbas before 2014.

Lack of ammunition and vehicles wasn’t the only problem for LDNR forces and certainly wasn’t the worst of them all. In 2014 they were a bunch of militia units with no centralised command or strategy and literal warlords in some sectors of the front. Only in the battle for Debaltsevo they fought like an actual army.

Being a Russian speaker in UA doesn't meam someone is Ru supporter. Many Russian speakers in UA are Ukrainian 'nationalists'. 'Natzists' in Azov batalion speak Russian. Russisn speakers in UA can be divided into 3 groups: pro UA, pro Ru and "local Soviets' for whom the collapse of the USSR was a catastrophe. This third group live mostly i Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

Important point: 12:38 claims that ceasefire was signed AFTER Russians pushed Ukraine from Debaltseve. In fact, Minsk agreements were signed several days before that, but Russia claimed it could not stop separatists from attacking Debaltseve. So they broke those infamous "agreements" back in 2015.
