Personally, as someone who worked on the F-14 for years in the Navy, I always found the F-18 was the Corvette, technically advanced even in the early days. The Tomcat? That was more like a 1970 SS Chevelle with the 454 LS package. Pure, unadulterated muscle. Big engines, huge footprint, and the very essence of a long-range interceptor.
@trashpanda3142 жыл бұрын
The Phantom was along the same lines to me. A bit more crude, but tough as nails as a result. Strap a cockpit to a couple J79-GE-8B’s cranking out 17,000lb of thrust wet, each. In the 60’s! Many stories from Nam pilots that were saved just by the raw power of those J-79’s. The Tomcat was indeed a worthy replacement, but the Phantom doesn’t get the respect it deserves in the annals of aviation history.

Given some games like War Thunder have featured it for years now, the popularity and exposure of the F-4 increased. If nothing else, being a fan of the Phantom is a classic pick. Very cool aircraft.

Note on the RWR, the actual sensors feeding the system are located on the tips of the elevons, when you significantly move the flight controls (and subsequently the elevons) the direction readout of the rwr becomes skewed. Also they can only detect emissions in a horizontal plane, if you roll to turn into a bandit, the actual azimuth that the RWR indicates will be off until you fly level again.

Dogfight tip: at 11:07 when that enemy blew by you behind you, the optimal move is to turn your plane right to get inside his turn circle. I guess he lost vision on you because what would normally happen when you keep up your turn like that is that the enemy will swing around and get his nose on you before you can make a full 360 and take a shot at him. By reversing your turn, you prevent the enemy from doing that.

it's pretty crazy how tech like this from the early 1970s is still relevant and still has scary capability. look at the sidewinder too, it originated in the 1950s and is still the most successful missile platform in the world, hard to shake off with a good enough warhead. the M1 abrams design has already been around (counting the start of design, not starting at production) for about 50 years, and is still one of the most successful MBTs. the leopard 2 is also about 50 years old in it's design, still extremely capable. it's mindblowing that we still use tech from designs that you may think is outdated, but in reality if you threw a decent pilot in an F-15C eagle against an intermediate pilot in a SU-57 you may have the eagle emerge victorious. it's truly just something that makes you wonder: How?

yes, the tomcat is pretty simple and more straightforward than something modern with lots of weapons like the F/A-18, but actually flying the tomcat is way harder. While you didn't need it in the video, one habit that is useful to develop while in the Tomcat is flipping the ACM switch/cover on your upfront console when getting into a dogfight (you can have it as a toggle on your joystick): just by flipping it up, it will set up your plane for ACM mode which will set your gun fire rate to High if it's low, cool your Sidewinders and Prep your other missiles if for some reason you have them off and more importantly it will switch your radar to Boresight mode and your Phoenixes and Sparrows will require 1 second of pulling the trigger to fire them instead of the usual 3. Speaking of, with Boresight enabled you can access the vertical ACM scan modes (Hi/Lo) for the radar.

The missle that jester called and rwr didn't announce was prob R-27ET, long-range IR missle which is equipped on I think all Russian aircraft in DCS. You killed SU-33 which would make sense. Always remember to look at RWR and know what you're up against.

Pro tip. When flying down low and hiding in the mountains. When you get a callout of an enemy within 10nm, try flipping the ACM cover switch up and then firing your Phoenix. It will be active immediately off the rail, you don't even need a lock if you know where the enemy is. Just point in the general direction and shoot. Another thing I noticed is that you frequently used the horizontal scan modes, which is fine, but sometimes you don't want the enemy to know you've locked them up. It's perfectly fine to use TWS mode and just let Jester lock em up in TWS-A and then fire. That way the enemy won't get an indication of lock until the Phoenix goes active, which is frequently too late for them to do anything about it.

Drewski you know that you can use the TCS (the camera on the nose) to guide the AIM54 I also find it useful to spy on locked targets so I know when they launch missiles and can kinetically counter them or turn cold if within the MAR.

@glassfullofmilk3 жыл бұрын
@@TheStalkingSniper ACM Flap up TCS track on a target aim in the general area. Fire. its a very rough line of sight/angle off track but it does work. You know its working because the Pheonix will drop and move slightly toward the target. Usually it will just carry on ahead of you with the ACM flap up. Check the patch notes if you don't believe me Heatblur recently fixed it around 1-2 patches ago.
@TheStalkingSniper3 жыл бұрын
@@glassfullofmilk omg dude what you just said has nothing to do with the TCS... When you flip the acm cover up phoenix' are set to mad dog, meaning they will turn their seekers on and go active right off the rail. The TCS literally plays not part in this..

Fox 1 is a missle that needs the planes radar to lock on Fox 2 is a heat seeking missle, but back then they were rear aspect missles, now they are all aspect missles Fox 3 is a missle that has its own radar, most commonly know as 'fire and forget' missles

When I was in the Navy my sister squadron the Grim Reapers were all F14's, years later one by one, I watched them go to the hanger a few down from ours to get dismantled. Such a sad sight. I didn't realize they were getting phased out, I just thought they were getting upgrades until someone told me.

A place between "Why is he shooting 4 Sparrows at a friendly using his IRST?" and "Eagle 1-1, request BRA and Bogey Dope, Singleton CAP on station, loiter 25, how copy, over?" I heard of a flight sim years ago....in development that would have included an entire series of highest fidelity training missions. Like America's Army level training. Classes, tests, practicals, dedicated training aircraft with dedicated flight instructor AI. That's what we need. Thats what we've ALWAYS needed.
