Indeed. I've always wondered why a guy who so clearly has this incredible warm baritone voice almost never used his lower range. You can tell he's always a tad uncomfortable in a higher register as well, so I never understood why he never let himself stop playing tenor.

With or without growl's, this band are magnificent and what i have always appreciated and love about them is that they're always doing something new with every new album release, testing new waters and constantly experimenting musically. They may get a lot of hate for it but in my mind, that just gives me even more respect and awe for them, as they aren't afraid to take risks.🔥

@@MERA1439huh? I think you will find the consensus that DT is the most technical prog band, probably like ever. So they are the master musicians. I like Opeth, but let's just tell it how it is. Few guitarists and bassists can reach Petrucci and Myung's level and Portnoy is no slouch either. Ruddess is a magical keyboardist, though not really my style if I would hear him in isolation.

Let's not forget how many songs Opeth gave us with nature's motifs. Forest of October, Black Rose Immortal, Blackwater Park, Harlequin Forest, Lotus Eater, etc. It all fits into this wicked harvest the band seems to be conjuring in The Last Will and Testament.
@Neonmirrorblack
@Neonmirrorblack Ай бұрын
Pretty good analogies, although Ghost Reveries isn't really about a "haunted" castle, despite the album title and "Ghost of Perdition". It's about demonic possession...in a castle. I also wouldn't consider Blackwater Park a "gloomy forest", but more of a gloomy swamp on the outskirts of a forest. The Last Will and Testament so far has a sinister sound, but it has nothing to do with an asylum.

@jotun1022
@jotun1022 Ай бұрын
chromatic is a great adjective... but i bet there is a weird scale or mix of scales that are being used here which might be apparent after learning the music. it all sounds very interesting... like grandiose but haunting, yet pure and very impure at the same time. this is like nothing I've ever heard
@transcendkira
@transcendkira Ай бұрын
@@jotun1022but chromatic scale is a term already used in music, it doesn't actually need to be a mix of scales, all notes in the octave can themselves constitute a scale. It was kind of necessary to recognise that traditional scale structures were insufficient to strictly use alone with how 'western' music was evolving throughout genres like blues, jazz, rock, and metal, where classical training may have been sparse or even outright ignored at times in favour of chromatic grooves and riffs. In saying that Opeth employ a pretty grand mix of scales and chord styles in their own playing.

Chromatic noodling used to be a tool in Opeth's arsenal, which they used to connect or lead up to epic, groovy and memorable sections. These days it seems that chromatic noodling becomes less of a tool and more a finality in itself. High quality craftsmanship no doubt, but less relatable, less catchy, less memorable in my opinion.

@@pierrebridet It's true. That sounds cool in several first listening, but it's nothing to catch in mind after that. Being progressive and complex only because it's progressive and complex - that's not an Opeth way... I hear a lot of instruments, technics and sounds, combined together, but overall - I didn't hear the song - with start, growth, culmination and ending. Because of that - I can't really enjoy any whole album since 2008. They all is only progressive for being progressive. That's all...

A lot of their more recent stuff picks notes that don’t really work and it just sounds “odd” or creepy almost. It’s like they ran out of ideas and are just trying to pick notes on guitar and vocals that aren’t supposed to be there to be “different”. Annoys the F out of me

Yes, i can understand that point, well. For me, both "paragraphs" are the best two Opeth- songs, since 2008. Agreed: proggy, nerdy, in their own way, but with high hopes. I'm curious about the whole 1st listening expierience, hopefully it growth with every home session!

Yeah I'm sick of it. Most Opeth riffs in the last 15 years is a bunch of do-do-do-doodly-deedle-do-do-donk-a-do-do. I need whole chords with unique voicing again. Tired of the doodly doo.

@@jasonashley9853 They never did the same thing forever, they were just consistent and had a unique style. Now they are trying to sound like King Crimson or Dream Theater and are barely recognizable. It's not bad, it's just meh. It's like a different band. I get it that they want to try new things but it's not working for me. They have lost that unique aura. After all these years it's still disappointing.

@@Maggbba you are pickier than I am. Most harsh metal vocalists sound like shit TBH. Not Mike. His growls have always been great. Also they are still playing with different licks and stuff. I like what they have released from this album so far. And the first track really hooked me. It's got this horror movie/post-apocalyptic vibe about it. I'm a big fan.

It sounds like a mish-mash of discarded Pale Communion tracks, with some Watershed sinister atmosphere, definitely Axe-inspire drum sounds, plus some unexpected classic prog moments a la Dream Theater, plus some theatrical King Diamond-esque haunting vocals. Really impressive stuff, composition wise. Great job. I hope the whole album will be a feast of diversity and variety like this. Only negative point, maybe, it doesn't sound so cohesive as a whole. But you can't have everything, it's either more cohesiveness at the expense of variety or the contrary. I feel like all the metalheads are going to be slightly let down again, as perhaps they'd have expected a more metal oriented material, standing upon the Paragraph One premises. But then again, if they did they still miss the central point about this band, I fear. Which is that it's gonna take you by surprise, always. No offense intended to all brothers of metal of course! I'm one of them, but I love Opeth for what they are. And they stopped being metal-centred fifteen years ago.

Have this song on repeat and as is always the case with new Opeth I have to listen to each track about 50-60 times in a row to understand all that I’m hearing. This song is magnificent. Every element is new and yet familiar. No one can put dread, despair, regret, impending doom and anticipation to music like Mikael. This fucking track, my god. It is the best prog metal yet written. It’s exceptional-I don’t know how else to put it. It’s perfect.
