Metal or not its a funny sweater to see on a death metal guy. Thats all we are saying...not putting Mikael down or expecting him to wear only spike nailed arm bands and corpse paint. It looks like a sweater you'd wear while reading a book in your private study while sipping scotch and smoking a Meerschaum not playing a metal show. What's metal about it is Mikael I'm sure doesn't give a shit if its metal or not.

Obviously Mikael has several thousand albums in his collection so something in there has to be cool but he hasnt turned me onto any good ones yet. Just my opinion though.

Opeth used to have this occult, a little bit horrid, somber image. As we say in danish; "The marshwoman is brewing" vibe to it. Beautiful but yet gloomy - dark foggy forrests, cold winter lakes and so forth....I mean just look at Morningrise, Blackwater Park cover. Hope they'll get back to something similar with their next album.

zamkowicz Tanks! :D Sums them up pretty good I think. "The Marshwoman is Brewing" is those beautiful foggy fields on the countryside, - and depends on when they appear. But it mostly appears around evening when the weather is getting colder and the season changes to Winter. Just so you know what we mean about the expression! ;D

+PowerVoltaire Eloquently said my friend... While I do love the last 2 albums in their own way, I'm growing more nostalgic for the vibes you're describing. However, I doubt they will ever really go back there, I think Mikael is fairly set with the old school prog direction

+PowerVoltaire Beautifully poetic statement, and very apropos. Unfortunately for those of us who identify with that conception of Opeth, I don't believe that is anything they will be returning to. As much as I wanted to, I didn't enjoy Heritage at all. I gave it another go with Pale Communion, but that was strike two. The next album I will stream before purchasing. Thats not to suggest Opeth isn't allowed to morph into another way of being and expressing, but I believe it's been done at the cost of alienating fans who desire the "beautiful yet gloomy" sonic textures we used to get from the band.
@CCDaDon159 жыл бұрын
Half of it is that his voice isn't that well in the mix. The other half is that his growl has grown more average. But that's fine to me. It doesn't change it, it's still amazing music. I'm also glad he doesn't do growls in studio anymore. Adapting to your voice is the only thing you can do and Opeth still manages to make great music. It's just not the same. Not gonna whine about it.

OdmupP37 He sounded quite good on the Australian tour in May. However, as the year's gone on and they've played more shows, it's probably taken its toll on his growling voice. I don't think he's completely lost his ability to growl; he's just lost the ability to do it night after night without it turning to crap. I think that's a big reason why the last two albums are all clean vocals - because he needs more songs in the setlist that don't damage his voice.

I think that while he's not as good as he used to be at it, this was more of an outlier with Mikael's Growling. I saw him in San Francisco last year and his growling sounded fine. really his clean singing doesn't sound close to normal on this either so I wonder if he had a cold or something at the time cause all his singing sounds off on this, kinda sounds a bit tired and earlier songs from the concert sound a bit better.

The guy shot his vocals when he rejoined Bloodbath. In Opeth he never used growling full time so he could always rest a bit on shows when going clean singing but in Bloodbath he had to growl all the way for hours (also doing growls for the Tägtgren songs from NMF whose growls are immense and brutal as fuck) - this is evident in TFM album where his vocals reached the point of no return. Also, he got sick of metal and started to work on his cleans AND the guy is a smoker.

@@ItsNotaTuhmah Mikael fucked his voice on the 2010 shows, the monitoring wasn't good, so Mikael did not use his usual growl because it didn't sound good and pushed more from his throat causing permanent damage to his voice, he mentioned in an interview that after those shows, whatever he did, his usual growl didn't sound the same anymore and he even had some problems with clean vocals, Tägtgren is a smoker as well, didnt seem to affect his vocals that much (i mean he did loose his high screems from 2016 to 2019), but he has them back now for the Worship tour, i believe it was actually something to do with his Mouth and Lips position rather than vocal damage.

tuulenkoti `Man what you don't get is that Akerfeldt's growls were THE growls...the best growls Death metal ever produced. People who didn't like growls would like Mikaels's growls because they had such a unique and brutal quality to them. To death metal fans him not being able to do the growls anymore is like Robert Plant from Zepplin not being able to hit the high notes anymore. It's sad and as true Opeth fans it matters a great deal so ease up on your dickish comments...Rodiootje99 didnt even say anything deserving this reaction. Another thing is even his clean singing on this song was real pitchy and off. Maybe the band was having abad day or theyre tired as fuck of playing the old shit...who knows? The other thing id like to add to this discussion is the fact that not only is mikael's voice suffering but he is looking very gaunt and his skin is getting withdrawn and lifeless...know what it causing that shit? Fucking cigarettes!!!

+Alex Dokhov We all get old. I'm not upset about it and can completely understand why he doesn't have the vocal ability he once did. His clean vocals still sound amazing so at least there is still that right? Truthfully though he really isn't that old and there are a lot of death metal singers who are his age and even older who can still perform their signature gutturals. I think maybe the smoking has caught up with his voice and his warm ups probably don't help anymore. I have heard other performances where he sounded decent though. He's gotta work on that shit and not let it disappear. The majority of the catalogue is that vocal style.

ItsNotaTuhmah Can you find a source for that? As far as I can tell he only ever performed with Bloodbath about nine times so I'm not sold on that being the reason for the growls going out the window.

Looks they are out of shape this time. Physycally and technically pretty well, but without power. I guess they got bored with playing metal, but I trust they will return to a good track.
