Opeth is a rabbit hole as deep as any and this album isn't even one of the big fan favorites (though I absolutely adore it and I've been a fan for 20 years). As for recommendations -- you can't really go wrong with any song, but it would be cool if you'd check out pre-Heritage Opeth, like something from Still Life, Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries. Maybe Moonlapse Vertigo, Leper Affinity or The Baying of the Hounds.

Awesome, Opeth is my favorite band of all times. They have such an amazing ability to set a certain mood with their music and they change their style so often, every song is another journey! Check out Ghost of Perdition, Harlequin Forest or Burden, Windowpane by them... or pretty much any other song :D

Yeah! For an even more versatile Opeth experience try something from the album Watershed (boardeline album between growl-including and non-growl Opeth). Recommend the song Heir Apparent. But please, if you pick that one, do include the beautiful "intro-song" Coil! Or, you could pick The Lotus Eater 😊

If you want to hear the more beautiful (yet sad) side of Opeth, check out Lovelorn Crime from their latest album In Cauda Venenum. It's truly a masterpiece (and I'm a huuuuge fan of their old heavier stuff before Mikael stopped growling in 2011). Dignity off the same album is also a seriously awesome song. They've used an e-bow throughout their career to create those mood setting eerie guitar voices "above" the other instruments. ps. forgot to mention that Dignity (Svekets Prins in the Swedish version which translates to Prince of Betrayal) probably has the best and tastiest guitar solo in their album career. Mikael Åkerfeldt is a great writer, composer and pretty damn good at playing guitar as well. The lead guitarist Fredrik Åkesson is an amaaazing guitarist who've gotten more parts over the years and he can play very emotional or veeeery technical. They've released 5 albums in total without any growls or really heavy stuff, the first being Damnation in 2002 (the opening song Windowpane is amazing).

I must confess that I'm not that well acqainted with Opeth, but I always enjoy this Swedish outfit, though I prefer the songs without the growls - this was a treat! By the way, Nick mentioned Arabic scales at the beginning of the song, so here's a recommendation - please, try out Orphaned Land from Israel with the song Oceanland from the album by the same name; I have a feeling that you might like it! ...

I'm sorry for you that you missed Opeth live at Red Rock in May 2018, because they filmed their 4th live DVD. I've seen Opeth 3 times live, it's a must for prog fans, if they can stand some growling. Opeth released 13 Studio Albums, so the Rabbit hole is really Deep, like somebody else said. But I guess out of your hometown there is somewhere the prairie, so you will know rabbitholes :-) Mikael Akerfeldt stopped the growling after the 9th Album, which I think is a Little sad, because it was the Special note of their Music: his angelic clean voice and his demonish growling … same as you heard in Jinjer yesterday. Somebody else recommended Ghost of perdition, this was my first ever Opeth experience, which pulled me in the hole. This song contains everything that defines Opeth.

I believe Damnation was the first album where he doesn't do guttural vocals on any of the songs. Great album, by the way, top to bottom.
@bernhardkrickl35673 жыл бұрын
That is true but Damnation was originally supposed to be the second disc of a double album together with Deliverance and at that point it was more of an experiment, sort of an "acoustic" album. They went back to mixed vocal styles after that for another two albums before Mikael abandoned the growls for good on Heritage.
