The set and his clothes wouldn't have been enough to ruin him. A lot of '80s stuff looked like that. It was his dancing, hand motions, and gyrating on the floor like a woman being plowed that fucked it all up.

Looking back, most band videos in the 80's sucked in general. It's really the labels fault for trying to push his looks more than his music. Maybe they wanted more females getting into his music. Either way, he wrote good songs and played good live, and one bad video won't change that.

People act like he didn't dance around flamboyantly on stage. Check out his live clips. When you write a song like The Stroke you can do whatever the hell you want to on stage if you sound this good. I never saw this video when I was a kid... when I first saw MTV was when this wa son the radio but apparently right after this was pulled out of rotation. The way he talks about the original concept it was gonna be by the people behind Thriller and have this kids turning into like punker kids on the way to his show thing. The director of the video was an extremely flamboyant gay man (Google it). Apparently he was the one who designed the set and pushed for Billy to do some of the moves he did here. Billy just wanted to do the things he does on stage so the audience would know what a live show was like. Hence the dancing and gyrating. When the record company saw it they were horrified but there was no money to reshoot so they reluctantly released it and it destroyed Billy's career. Opie was wrong. This was never cool for any time. Homophobia is a stupid made up word to silence critics. Homo means the same. Phobia means fear. Homophobia would mean fear of the same. Gay means happy. It has nothing to do with being a Homosexual or a Lesbian. A person of any sexual preference can be happy or sad. Bottom Line: Squire makes Richard Simmons look like Vin Diesel in this video. He also has what many construe as homosexual double entendres in a lot of his lyrics. (Kinda like Rob Halford before he came out.) The difference is is Billy Squire was little too much of a Captain Obvious about it all, and it turned off his fan base. What ever you think of the guy, he is a really good singer and guitar player, but he had to see the video before it was released. He gave it the okay. He put out this product. So he is ultimately responsible for it's success or failure. It's too bad that it destroyed his career. He was a really talented guy, and probably would have had a long hit filled career otherwise. Great voice and Classic Marshall/Les Paul tone. If I was a betting man. I'd say he was BI. Too many coincidences (including the company he kept)
