I love my Opinel #8. So I bought the #15 in Bubinga. I found that the closing lock safety is very weak. I thought mine was defective. Then I saw this video, and I confirmed that yours can come partially open while locked closed, just as mine does. Digging into a pocket with a razor sharp blade exposed is troubling to me. I think the size has exceeded the platform for being a safe folder.

I keep my 15 slim ultra clean too. I got mine second hand from eBay and it arrived dull and dirty. I took the collar off and buffed it to new. I used Autosol on the metal parts which took off a tonne of tarnish. It’s my tomato cutting knife at work now.

It's an awsome knife! Just don't forget to rub the handle down with some mineral oil (thin coat) and keep it from getting to wet :)

just received it today (bubinga wooden grip - very beautifull), it is out of factory sharp as hell. in germany it´s not allowed to carry this, if you´re not hunting or fishing - so i wanted this piece just for kitchen use. gonna cook fish on friday :P btw: yes it is scarry outfolding it 1st time :D

I need to clarify this. In Germany it's definitely allowed to carry a normal folding knife. Ist eindeutig 42a-Konform.😉

Just wanted to let you know, folding knives with locks on them have been around since 1600's medieval times in Spain and Europe.
@ZimCoSurvival

Yes they have, the first recorded (we have evidence for) folding knife was dated to 500-600 bc and is known as the Hallstatt Knife. However it didn't have a lock. Locking pocket knives as we know them (more than a look what I have item) is what I was talking about. Prior to that locking pocket knives we're almost unheard of and we're mostly custom made. The Opinel was the first mass used folding knife and took on popularity in 1895 ish triggering it's inventer (josiph opinel) to manufacture the multiple sizes we see today in 1897. Opinel maintained itself as number 1 untill the first spring locking knife introduced in the United States in 1964 known as the Buck 110 Folding Hunter knife, known now as the infamous Buck Knife. So while yes locking pocket knives have been around for a very long time and I will admit that you can't compare a rare rich man's item to an everyday man's item. Opinel made pocket knives accessable to ordinary people. This is why I say they were first. We all say the wright brothers invented airplanes but the first functional airplane made it's maiden flight in October 1906. However unlike the wright flier it wasn't assisted in its takeoff and used only its own power to leave the ground from a stop. leading many to question if the wright flier was infact the first self powered flight. Since it was launched from a rail into a head wind to increase it's lift. When tested without these affects it wasn't successful during prior testing.

@@ZimCoSurvival Most of what you said is true, except for the elite rich man lock knives, in the 1600's they were a rare elite item, but in the 1700's they were actually common items, and the market places of Spain were flooded with them and sold as tourist items on every street corner. They became very common by the late 1700's I did a study on Spanish locking knives and they were very common by the end of the 1700's even sold in common mans market places and makers made novelty folders 3 ft long just to show off their craft. By the 1800's the Navaja lock knife was in full mass production and was seen as a poor mans knife in Spain, carried by lower class workers, soldiers, carpenters, even street criminals and robbers, by the time of the mid 1800's they were so common that even children had them, teenagers and gangs of knife fighters roaming the streets. This was not a rich mans knife like it's early custom innovation, this was even known as the working mans knife, carried by sailors, farmers, gamblers, thieves and every common person.

I don't agree it's the most reliable locking mechanism on any folding knife,that title goes to any back lock.This is the most unreliable mechanism. The only knife,that it's locking mechanism failed and closed in my hands,while cutting cardboard,is the Opinel No 8 .However,it still is my favorite folding knive and I own about 40 folding knives.A tip: No matter how stiff the collar is,while you turn it to lock the blade, don't put oil inside,Better safe than with less fingers lol!

How do you get a knife to close while cutting cardboard? I removed the lock from my #8 and have never had this happen and I cut a lot of cardboard.

Great steak knife? Nah. Use this knife in the manner it was designed. Get yourself a set of good steak knives and you will see ! For Pete's sake; you're supposed to be a knife man. Come on! You know better than to call this anything other than what it is. This is a fine filet knife; not a great steak knife. I have had a #15 and it has been my dedicated filet knife for a l-o-n-g time.

If he wants to use it as a steak knife then let him use it as a steak knife who are you to say what he can and can’t do with he’s knife he’s property? If he wants to use he’s opinel 15 as a steak knife then that’s he’s choice if he wanted to use a machete to peel potatoes with then that’s he’s choice.
