I think the long awkward silence in the deputation fits the feel of the situation perfectly! Remember the idea of the engines talking to the fat controller about keeping both Donald and Douglas made them feel uncomfortable which is why there was a long silence as they were taking time to process the situation and how they were going to handle it
@usualblokeluke2 жыл бұрын
Damn I now have a new way of looking at that scene Very interesting perspective there
@kodabear28562 жыл бұрын
@@usualblokeluke you’re welcome! My advice is if you know the books, especially the books of Thomas, the stories and characters by heart, you’ll notice little details like that you never would’ve noticed before. It’s not the first time the engines have felt uncomfortable telling the fat controller something either. In the story little western, when the engines are telling Douglas he needs to tell the fat controller about Oliver, Douglas freaks out and doesn’t wanna do it. Then when the fat controller makes his appearance known the engines go quite. I know that because the book says duck broke the awkward silence. It’s also why in the deputation when everyone made Percy tell him, he was scared and nervous

The opening theme to this video has to be my favorite theme in the entire series
@exarkun422 жыл бұрын
there are times in series 2 where you can tell what episode that had been filmed directly prior. my favorites are: A shot in "Thomas, Percy and the Coal" where a black wall can be seen blocking view of the stationmaster's house, presumably to hide damage sustained during "Thomas Comes to Breakfast" A shot of Percy in "Thomas comes to Breakfast" where you can barely make out Donald's tender wedged under the signal box in the background
@JoesAnimationHub2 жыл бұрын
there are also smaller details too, two of them I've picked up on are Percy's cylinder damage from "Percy and the Signal" onwards (as the model fell off the set), and Toby's gradual headlamp rod deterioration from "Ghost Train" and "Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree" (which is completely snapped off for the shoots on the Elsbridge set) ... also, I think that on each of the sets for Knapford, Crosby and Brendam, "Wrong Road" and "Edward's Exploit" came first in the shoots on the set, as they're the only stories to use S1 rolling stock (the Express and branch line coaches) with the first shot on Knapford yards being "The Missing Coach" (later "Saved from Scrap") and from there the newer S2 stock came into play.
@newguy1862 жыл бұрын
18:55: Not to mention, in the restored versions of many of these episodes, particularly for S1-2, alternate, less refined takes were used, presumably because much of the old footage was lost in the 2004 (I believe that's when S1-3 were restored and S4-5 were remastered) restoration.

Season 2 is definitely where the story order gets very wonky. Season 1 had some starts by botching Gordon's arc but was otherwise fluid, but Season 2 cuts down multiple arcs and then references them in its episodes. Even the More About Thomas stories I feel they kinda botch because that was a development arc for Thomas becoming less arrogant, but they take out the continuity and also place it at the beginning of the series before all the 'jerk Thomas' stories at the end (a shame since it would have made a good lead up to Thomas' characterisation in Season 3).

Editing plays a big factor into the crash there too. Notice a lit of whick curse as Duck swerves into the siding to avoid James as a mix of shots showing him and from his view on the track are spliced together. 17:47 This is only an issue with the remastered version of the episodes. In the original VHS release, they cropped a lot of shots, and had a black bar added in post, to cover up their name plates until they were supposed to have them. When the remaster was done, whoever did the editing simply took the original takes (this goes for pretty much the entire series btw), and just used the footage as is, with no alteration. This often resulted in them using incorrect takes at times, since the remaster's editor would often just use whatever take showed up first in the reel, without checking closely to ensure it's the same take as the original episode. That's why Season 1 has that weird blooper of Henry bumping into the building and then driving away. The end result is that in the Donald/Douglas episodes, you get to see their name plates at all times now, and the shots that were previously cropped to hide them are no longer cropped. It's a weird inconsistency that comes with the remaster, but personally I kinda like it. Not for how it is in context of the show, but simply for the fact that we get to see the complete unaltered footage that they shot, without any obvious edits done to hide their own mistake (if you watch the VHS version of Douglas destroying the brake-van, the black box covering his name plate is extremely obvious on a modern screen).

To be honest, I forgot how much I enjoyed series 2 in my childhood. I think it’s topped series 1 because of the stories and Ringo’s narration. I have so many favourite episodes but my top 5 would be: 1. The Deputation because personally I think that is Donald and Douglas’s best story in the whole show and the story itself is brilliant of how all the engines came together to convince the fat controller to let Donald and Douglas stay on the Island of Sodor. 2. Edward’s Exploit because this was a unit of the episode for a number of reasons, one is that it’s the best story for the character Edward, the music, set and the story’s moral was told tell. And it’s a good one to choose for your number 1 too. 3. A Close Shave because of how the dangers and damage a runaway can do, and I liked the happy ending of Duck been able to come back home after Diesel is sent away for lying to the other engines about Duck 4. The Diseasel because it’s another nostalgic classic in my childhood because it’s a funny episode and a good way of introducing the characters Bill and Ben and Boco. 5. Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree because it’s a brilliant, well- written story to end the series. Honourable mentions: Thomas Percy and The Coal Old Iron The Runaway Percy Takes The Plunge Ghost Train

OOOOOHH!" Percy takes the Plunge for like you said, has a great crash & moral lesson. Break Van & the Deputation together for bringing in Donald & Douglas, exploring the characters, & the others uniting to save them. The Diseasel for like you said, great introduction to 3 new characters & the funny trick. Wolly Bear for how Percy turns out & it being a good follow up to one in my top 5. 5. Thomas Comes to Breakfast for having such a memorable crash & a good moral lesson. 4. A Close Shave for Duck getting to show how he is as an Engine with an epic runaway & hilarious crash. 3. Old Iron for Edward getting to prove himself with a suspenseful runaway & epic shots. 2. Edward's Exploit as it shows how committed Edward is on his job against all odds. 1. Ghost Train for its dark & foggy scenery & haunted feel. Also, Percy's ghost impression is Top Tier.

I guess I would've called it the GACC (Golden Age Cartoon Character) Face syndrome, as those expressions were also quite common with some of the cartoon characters from the Golden Age i.e. the way Pinocchio smiles on the VHS cover of the film of the same name and Mickey Mouse on various occasions. In fact, that was also the same with Tom and Jerry - at the end of Jerry's Cousin, Tom's worshipping Jerry and kissing his foot and during the last 2 seconds, Jerry turns to the camera and hey presto, there's that open smile. But it's cool that someone has pointed the case out.

One uneventful story includes Diesel trying to pull old and empty trucks from a siding, even though at the end the trucks on different sidings sing the funniest song to him simply called 🎵Pop Goes the Diesel🎵 which p*sses him off.

Season 2 doesn’t include Annie and Clarabel’s theme either. And that theme was never used again.

Trevor appears in the railway series book Thomas and the Twins from 1989. A long while since Edward the Blue Engine in 1954.

More About Thomas was published on September 22, 1986. And then series 2 premiered the next day. I guess that's why Christopher Awdry was upset with those adaptations. But hey, there's a good chance that people in the UK read the book before series 2.

Fun fact: the flying kipper van that was on the train that chased duck has appeared in a total of four episodes first in flying kipper (without a face and on the kipper) close shave (albeit with a large laughing face and gets its brown livery again ) Thomas, James and the tree (apeared as cameo and also one of the trucks that roasted james while he was passing the yard) percy's predicament (cameo again, behind toby during the scene were we get to see how much damage percy did to that truck,also has writing on its sides.) also little fun fact: in a japanese promo art for close shave the flying kipper van has a black livery, also how the fuck was duck not able to 5 trucks??

Anyone find it odd that Thomas’ face never changes throughout ‘Thomas & Trevor’? Constant ‘Derp’ Face
