For those taking the Nail Tech Exam: Filing up and down on the sides will get you points off, only file towards you on the sides. (Filing towards the cuticle can cause cuts in the skin and tears on the sides of the nail causing potential infection). Also sawing the free edge will get you points off (can promote peeling and splitting).

I wouldn’t recommend filling back and forth on ur natural nail like that, as it can cause breakage and it’s not very good for ur nails. Instead filing in the same direction, same way because it doesn’t pull or damage ur nails. Just a tip!!😁😁

YESSS! even if i want square, i ALWAYS start with short oval. as you oil your nails/keep polish on/take better care of them they can get stronger and may break less, but when first starting you gotta file off the corners

Round is such a classic look, but for some reason round and square always make my nails break, I think it’s bc of my anatomy. Square is the only length that lets my nails grow out

I always did square nails out of curiosity I Google what nail shape is stronger and weakest to my surprise square shapes break a lot in this is why my nails are always breaking so I'm going to try and do Squoval nail shape because apparently that one in round-shaped nails are strongest and more prone to breakage my nails grow naturally fast so I'm going to be able to do this in 3 days or so already started doing the shape a little bit but I need to learn how to do it properly on myself and then I can use my UV lamp to do gel natural clear look that I love

The filing back and forth on the nail is just... ach
@NellenelleForSure4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was looking at that. They do it in salons even though blogs claim to only file in one direction. I came to this video specifically to watch how she was going to file it. I've personally found that filing one way makes my nails weak and break-off. There is also more fraying on the edges to clean up. So at this point I think it's about technique, I rlly don't know.
@elenachew73454 жыл бұрын
@@NellenelleForSure depends on the shape you’re going for. If you’re going for a square tip, there should be minimal filing and any fraying won’t be serious. For a more circle shape, file one way on each side of the tip, otherwise there’s gonna be a LOT of breakage in the future

Helpful but is there a recommendation for people with nails are on the softer end of the spectrum that tend to peel at the free edge? I prefer to wear my shirt nails with a rounded square but wonder if the shape is contributing to my issues.
@Maikezia14 жыл бұрын
Good question 🤔. I as well struggle with that
@karlabunns4 жыл бұрын
It's not the shape, peeling means you're filing back and forth. You should only file in one direction.
@razorcatshark32234 жыл бұрын
@@karlabunns I so wish that was the fix but I ONLY file in one direction using either glass file or very high (low abrasive 300) regular files. Much of the damage from my last salon dip in March (!) has now grown out but I still find that the corners of certain fingers tend to break or peel when I go with my preferred squoval shape. Am experimenting with a more rounded shape despite my aesthetic preference to see if they are less prone to issues.
@plainroz67714 жыл бұрын
That happens to me as well, I bought a nail strengthener and it's worked wonders. Maybe you could try one of those and see how it turns out
@NellenelleForSure4 жыл бұрын
@@razorcatshark3223 Definitely invest in a strengthener. I too only file in one direction and yet the pro in this video files back and forth & up and down 👀. My preferred shapes are oval & almond. They break much faster than when I have them squared though. (Annoying detail: My ring and pinky nails naturally grow oval while the rest grow square. The oval nails grow much slower than the squares as well. So I rlly baby them when they grow out. Takes too long to come back when they break. 😩 I shaped them all square for consistency/uniformity but it doesn't flatter my hands IMO. That said, we just have poor quality nails that need some fortifying lol. On top of using strengthening polishes, last month I went weeks with no polish but oiling my nails and I believe there has been improvement. I guess dry nails break easily.

Anyone have any advice on how to file nails from scratch? My nails were super super short, I haven’t cut them in a couple weeks just so they have some length. They’re still not as long and well maintained like in the video, but enough where I can begin to shape them. Any tips moving forward?
@Fiisvii Жыл бұрын
@AnnieNugget I'm two months late lol but when I cut my nails super super short, I wait for them to grow out a bit so I can smooth the jagged parts of my nail. As my nails grow longer, I slowly round out the shape over the weeks. I can't stand squares bc the corners have caused me to bleed. Also, moisturize your hands if you can every night. That helps a lot for the growth and flexibility of the nails
