Lil guys dont get the respect they deserve in most cases. Most have hard short lives. I saw a oppossum go in my shed end of winter. I started putting food and water there for him. It was ate every morning. Gave a variety. He loved grapes and eggs. Only a week later I found him laying next to the shed barely alive in freezing rain. Poor little guy had no feet. They must have frozen off. All I could do is wrap him in a blanket, take him into my utility room away from pets, dry him, cover him again. He seemed to regain some movement and kept licking. I spoon fed him some water he lapped it up. But before I could take him to rehab next morning he passed. Broke my heart, but, he was warm, wasnt alone and I hope he knows someone loved him. I'm a believer he is restored, warm, healthy and happy. Loved in the most beautiful heaven. God bless you Mr. Stub. Next winter I will have many warm cozy boxes set up in that shed for any visitor who needs a home, in your honor lil guy.

Last summer we had a opossum that would come through our cat door, come into our home office, climb up on my desk and I'd feed him grapes, nuts and cheese and I pet him. We had an agreement if he wanted to eat he had to let me pet him and if I want to pet him I had to feed him. After eating he's curl up in the corner and nap. There is nothing like listening to a opossum snoring.

I have a rescued opossum that can't be released. I've had her a year. She is blind in one eye and her leg is messed up, but she can still get around fairly well. I let her outside sometimes and she will disappear for an hour or so and come back to the back door and paw at it. Just this week I realized that she had company on one of her short walks!!!! Yep, her little pouch is full of babies! I'm so excited. Don't worry.....I'll let them go as soon as they are ready, I''m not about turning wildlife into pets. But mama is the greatest animal I've ever known.

Yesterday morning I found a baby opossum about the size of my hand hanging from her head that was stuck between two branches while ants were trying to get at her and I took her in. I wasn't sure how long she'd been hanging there tho I do remember seeing larger opossums outside my window the night prior and hearing the constant squeaky noises they make. Her mom was nowhere to be found in broad daylight of course so after having her for a day and a half we gave her to a wildlife rehabilitator who said he'd release her in a couple of days. Even though we spent only a short while together I miss her dearly as if I've lost an old friend. I miss how she'd crawl into my hoodie pocket to sleep and sometimes make her way to my shoulder. She never bit me once and was very calm the whole time, her little claws were good at gripping but never hurt. This video is my attempt to sleep tonight.

How sweet to show this. Pretty calm, female I presume. Tail from this perspective looks a bit out sized, like swollen, just noticing, not criticizing. I've raised several orphaned clutches of little ones and wintered over some until mating season begins in early February. Did not have any issues with diet or fattied tails, they do so well with simplicity and variety. Pity for those of us who like to be hands on, they live only a couple or so years and are challenging to keep because of nocturnal living. I did not cage them, they adapted well to a provided toilet spot and didn't miss once, remarkable. They bloom with freedom and their browsing life in the wild suits them ideally.

And boiled eggs… Most of the time, they eat the yolk and leave the white with the shell. I can always tell when they’ve been there because there’s not one piece of cat food left and the water is ridiculously dirty! LOL

Heh, yes, some aspect of them bring out the "willies" in some folks. I thought as much until in my late '40s when I was hired as a park ranger for a drive-through exotic animal park and we were discouraging opossums and raccoons from raiding the Canada goose nests. An opossum was brought to me one evening, I think as a prank as I lived on the park grounds. Was a female who gave birth that same night in a cage in our spare bedroom. She was very docile and we fell in love with here, she stayed for a couple days and then we took her to a remote spot about a mile distant in the country. She was back in a couple days, snooping around a bush next to our house and I picked her up again, it was like a pre-arranged meeting. Ever since, I've been enthralled with them, they are so available and common, people do repel from them as they can look slckly and odd but it's our perceptions that are messed up, they're fine little folks.
