I hope he said that rather than be a pompous individual who desecrates science and art through the creation of this. On top of this clip, the movie shows Oppenheimer quoting this during a sex scene, which implies their was an almost sexual or primitive desire to create the weapon. Nolan should've left that scene out...

And in doing so, it leads into more devastating consequences. Because people catch on and can push forward on whatever the last genius left behind. If there were to be another Great War like the last one, it’s going to be even uglier than the last one. Because when one side isn’t giving up after years, it results into the final weapons.

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11 Verse 32 Oppenheimer is conveying his apology citing the particular Shloka, in which Bhagawan Vishnu says "I am Time, I'm the force of the destroyer of the Worlds, these people will eventually die, that means they are already dead." Oppenheimer thus, is saying that those who might die from the atomic bomb will eventually die, so I did my duty to invent this atomic bomb. Profound.

The Bhagvad Gita wasn't translated to English by Bob, but by his tutor at UC Berkeley, Arthur Ryder. The original Sanskrit version says "Kaal". Kaal means Time. Context: In the battle of Mahabharata, on the battlefield, the prince Arjuna felt helpless on seeing his loved ones on the other side of the battlefield. He knew his battle skills & thought that while fighting his own cousins & teachers, he'd end up killing them or at least severely injuring them. This threw him into a dilemma (much like what Oppenheimer faced after the nuclear tests). His charioteer, Krishna, tried to motivate him, but in vain. In a sort of last ditch attempt, Krishna who is actually the avatar of Lord Vishnu, took the form of his Eternal Self, as Lord Vishnu, and recited the Gita to Arjuna, telling him how he needs to do his duties because He i.e. God, intended it that way. Lord Vishnu's detailed advice is what the Bhagvad Gita basically is. This dialogue that has now become world famous, appears in Chapter 11, verse 32. In it, Vishnu says he's 'Kaal', or Time... contextually meaning, the Time-Spirit. What he meant to tell Arjuna was He is Time, and Time comes for all. Time is actually the ultimate destroyer. Think about it .. every second we waste, is a second destroyed & never coming back. What Vishnu meant to convey to Arjuna was, whether you do your duties or no, Time finally comes for us all, so keep doing your duties to the best of your abilities & let Time take care of everything else. This 'Kaal' was wrongly translated by Oppenheimer's tutor Ryder, as 'Death'. It should actually mean, "I am the Time-Spirit, the destroyer of worlds."

Most people, I think, are only aware of him quoting “now I am become death, destroyer of worlds,” so the added context of the rest is good, though I believe Nolan added it to impact how real this all was and to try to lend some semblance of how he felt to the viewers. The US was determined to create this bomb because they knew that it was in fact a bomb of peace. A conventional land invasion of Japan would have been far more ugly than the two bombs, and like it or not, nuclear threat and MAD have kept us from going to world war again. Oppenheimer should be proud of the work he did and we should all be thankful our government and military built a doomsday switch, it’s keeping us all alive.

So the inventor of the spear and the bow and arrow are liable for so many deaths too using this logic. When the first atom was split, the scientists researching this phenomena had no idea that it would be weaponised. They were just gaining a richer understanding of the world around them.

I don't think it's a matter of objective responsibility. I think no matter the rationale, Oppenheimer felt responsible for what will, and has been done with what he helped create. I think the same applied to Alfred Nobel and the dynamite.

Imma use it in a similar logic: *Frankenstein was considered a monster by creating a monster. *Temna was accused responsible for the killings by reviving Johan *If the child grew up problematic, they blame parents. *They accuse Nietzsche for everyone's nihilism. *There's some wild dude out there that will blame Nicola Tesla as responsible for fire outbreak. *A dude got hit by boomerang, and he blame the tree that gave birth to it. *A man died of natural causes. His son blamed God for creating nature.

The manhattan projects main focus was literally nuclear weapons? Albeit, there haven’t been many major wars after the nukes for a reason.

@@natebox4550 sometimes people only realize what they've done, after they saw the result of their actions. I imagine scientists pursue a solution, but then they see the result and go "aw shit..." quite often. There's a difference to predicting the outcome vs seeing the outcome.

It’s sad how no one in the younger generation seems to have a real idea of how absolutely fucking terrible the power of this weapon is. Having the attitude of “lol we all gonna die in nuclear war no cap” is pure cowardice and a misunderstanding of what that actually fucking means.

What are you talking about it? The world is much less likely to use a nuclear weapon now than they were before, remember there were multiple very close calls during the Cold War where both the US, the USSR, and China were actively planning on using the bomb.

That is actually not true as a gen z myself anytime i here about putin attacking Ukraine or British helping Ukraine i straight away got worried and my first prediction is always putins gonna bomb us drop a nuke honestly the thought of not knowing when your death is coming but knowing eventually it will drop and u won’t be able to say your last words before it does horrifies me imagine if they told us a nuke would drop with no. Time or estimate for when…

People are blaming Krishna for wars. Krishna just woke Arjuna up from the thought that he should become non-violent & leave his dharma (i.e warrior). Krishna then made him understand that leaving is not an option for you. No one should escape from their dharma becuase its the tool that will give you moksha. If Krishna was a Buddha's friend. Then Krishna would ve never advise such things to Buddha. Becuase Buddha's message is peace. If Buddha had thought that why don't I just take back the throne and start expanding my rule. Then Krishna would have stopped him, made him understand that by killing people, you would not achieve anything but disappointment, grief, ego. This is not your dharma. You dharma is to spread awareness, give message of peace. You can't go back to your life.

Smart men like Oppenheimer rarely think for the consequences and or responsibilities of their intelligence. I don't accept this apology. Made the bullets, made the gun, fired into a crowd...what did his genius intellect think would happen.

Dude, it really was used. People in modern days, have a tendency, around the world, not just in India, Tendency to underestimate the people of olden days. How they were not capable of this or that. They revealed now, River of mercury found underneath a pyramid. Not naturally occurring. Something about how if Mercury is used or handled, a certain way, it can generate ANTI gravitational properties. It would explain how it's not "aliens" that helped build the pyramids. Olden days' people, their science was just way more advanced than ours.. But no, people would rather prefer Aliens helped with this and that.
