Problem with digital is more the awful color grading it often has than the format itself. There are films and shows shot on digital that look awesome (most recent one I've seen that looks great is "The Bear, which is also a great show!) while others look awful (like the last Indiana Jones where they completely fucked up the color grading and everything is either yellow or blue). That said, I love how film looks, recently I've watched the remastered version of Heat and it's incredible, but digital sure has its place and allows filmaker to do things impossible with film cameras for a much lower cost.

Went to see this in the only 70Mm cinema in my country! It looked lovely! Something I noticed though was the flicker in the highlights! My dad remarked that this is a feature of 35Mm and the reason why my grandad and people of earlier generations often referred to the cinema as “the flicks”! A nice little moment there!

This is very cool. Given Kodak's history, I am not surprised at their ability to adapt and create the 65mm BW film. I hope this medium survives. There is nothing as immersive as an image on film. Or glass. Those 19th century Daguerre's are some of the most realistic images in the world...because they are real! Same for film, it is as close to real as we have come.

Actually, decades ago, Kodachrome was used for feature film production--but marketed/licensed as "Technicolor Monopak". Kodak had all rights for slide film Kodachrome, as well as 8mm and 16mm film stock. 35mm "low contrast" film stock (i.,e. Kodachrome Professional) was solely licensed to the Technicolor company. Technicolor 3-strip photography used cameras that were very complex and very huge. For scenes that could not accommodate the huge 3 strip cameras, low contrast Kodachrome was used instead as it could be used in any 35mm cone camera--even wind-up Eyemo cameras which were often used for newsreels! This "Technicolor Monopak" film was shipped to Kodak for processing, and the processed film was then optically printed to produce the RGB black and white "camera negatives" used in the conventional Technicolor process. Monopak was far grainier and inferior to 3 strip Technicolor, so Monopak was only used if it was absolutely essential. This was used from the 1940's until the industry switched to Eastmancolor negative film in the early 1950's. As a side nite, much of the footage in Walt Disney's "True Life Adventures" series was filmed in 16mm Kodachrome. The raw footage was then optically blown up to the Technicolor animation standard "Successive Exposure" method used for cartoon animation. This meant each frame of 16mm Kodachrome was photographed via optical printer onto black and white film three times--an exposure for red, blue, and green, in sequence. Technicolor would then treat this developed black and white film like any other animation photography. The advantage of this system was that the 16mm camera original was only handled once, and perfect registration for the 3 color records was achieved by exposing each primary color on the same reel of film.

I thought Kodak doesn't exist anymore. 🙂 But it's nice that someone can still make a movie on such big analog format like 70 mm is, I saw it in IMAX Prague and digital would be totaly pixelated on such massive screen. But it's obvious that such crazy technology will not be a standard anymore, movie which has 18 km and 300 kg...there is no way that hollywood will accept that, let's how that digital format and projectors will improve soon, because 4K is really not enough for big screen. It's nice that you can see in this movie even those shots which are not 100% perfect where actor is slightly off focus when he moves just a few cm from point where he was supposed to be, you don't see such things in modern movies where they fill with higher depth of field and then blury background in postprocess or it's everything in front of green screen. PS: It's still still small, make big format film and projectors. 🤣🤣

I like IMAX 1570, but my shout out goes to Panavision's System 65 & those gorgeous Super Panavision lenses. The IMAX motor is too noisy to record dialog? Just fire up that smooth as silk 65mm 5 perf Panaflex and blow it up to 1570. Thanks Quentin Tarantino & Robert Richardson for reviving the Panavision System 65 cameras, Dan Sasaki for preserving & restoring the Ultra Panatar lenses, and to the 100 theaters that gambled on projected anamorphic 70mm film at 2.79:1. And cheers to Kodak for continuing to make 65mm color stock & the new brilliant 65mm black & white stock. Christopher Nolan & Hoyte Van Hoytema, keep making these amazing large format photochemical films.🥂

An Alexi camera and Zeiss lenses could have done the same thing. I'm not convinced film is the only way to get what we saw in Oppenheimer. It's all about the lens choice and cinematic camera movements.

The resolution of Alexi 65mm is 6K resolution, which is far lower than 65mm film. It's a reason why Nolan uses Kodak film to get closer to a 16-18K theoretical resolution of IMAX 65mm.

to be honest, i watch this movie yesterday at IMAX cinema. But find it disappointing with the bombing scene only "just like that"? i can have better visualization in Discovery Channel or National Geographic or other in KZbin. it is to much exaggerate the Kodak 70mm feature in this movie, while 4/5 of all movie duration wasting on the discussion, court scene, and talking session. i must be honest, what for the IMAX or Kodak 70mm for this movie?

Were any portions of this film shot on digital? I noticed some of the more visually mundane (feel horrible saying that because even these were so beautiful) scenes didn't have that same large format film density and unctuous feel.

Some was shot on IMAX 65mm and some on regular 65mm. Generally the IMAX shots were the establishing shots, scientific effects shots and most the Trinity sequence. It's really obvious when you see it in IMAX 70mm because the aspect ratio changes when the scenes cut (along with the resolution.)

Digital has become much better in recent years, but there is just something that makes film look more like a film. A movie shot on film always looks great and looks like film, but a movie shot on digital only looks like film when it's done well, which it often isn't due to lazy studios or filmmakers. I get that smaller movies go for digital, and its great for up and coming filmmakers. But why big studio movies don't use film more often is beyond me. It should just be a tool that is available to everyone. Deakins, for instance, likes digital, and good for him. It gives him more options and he makes it work beautifully and puts in the work. But the whole notion of somewhat bigger studio films having to shoot on digital for the costs is just beyond me. Oppenheimer has a budget of 100 million dollars and can make it work, which is much less than most other bigger studio films. It should just be a choice for the filmmakers, and not be just reserverd for the likes of Nolan and Tarantino who have the clout to demand it.

And yet, more and more films are going cheaper by using 16mm instead of an Alexa because they simply don't color grade, only working on post-production of the image for color correcting when necessary (and it usually isn't). That's where the costs are cut on film when compared to digital. But since most budgets are basically using fixed numbers for production but are more flexible with post-production, they never consider that the postproduction is where you compensate the extra you may invest on film (which isn't that true when you actually work with film with intention because you don't shoot that many unnecessary takes or broll as you would with digital reducing time and film costs).

Can’t see why making 65 mm black and white stock should be a problem; just put it through the appropriate slitter/perforator. Indeed, I think I remember reading in a Kodak document somewhere that 65 mm 5222 was not a standard stock item but could be supplied to special order. No idea what the minimum quantity would be, but presumably a major production such as this would need enough. I wonder about using 5222 in an IMAX camera however. Unlike the Vision 3 colour stocks it does not have the rem-jet backing which I believe has lubrication and anti-static functions as well as anti-halation ones. Were there any static problems with running the stock at the high speeds of the imax cameras? What we need now is the Barbie Movie in IMAX. I thought I would hate the Barbie Movie, but having seen the trailer I think it’s brilliant.

I could be wrong, but I believe that the type of 65mm negative stock required by IMAX cameras requires the use of an stronger film base than conventional film stock due to the high speed of the film transport....over 300 feet per minute. Estar base?
