Wow. Honestly, what a great, free content on KZbin. I think one very important thing for deep work is missing here or in the book: meditation and deep concentration! For those who cannot concentrate deep cannot do deep work. And meditation helps to cultivate deep concentration. Trust me.

Great book but I think there is a middle-ground that Cal overlooks. The sort of work I do requires basically zero distractions and several hour blocks. So I just set aside those blocks and turn off my phone and work for 4-8 hour periods. And when I'm done I turn my phone back on. Additionally another key I've found is to turn off almost all notifications on your iPhone. No phone ringer, no beeps, buzzes, flashes or anything. Your phone should not have the power to get your attention or distract you. This has worked massively well for me.

Cal opts out of social media almost entirely citing it as a detractor of deep work. I recognize the value of chunks of deep work and am still able post videos on snap chat daily. There is a more integrated middle ground solution in my opinion. Admittedly though Cal is more productive and successful than I am so I guess the better comparison would be comparing Cal's approach to the approach of a guy like Gary Vaynerchuck. Gary's very existence is a very strong counterpoint to Cal's idea of the importance of deep work. Great review by the way!

I am confused by Cal's contradiction, in numerous articles and videos he states his research has led him to conclude that passion is a terrible idea to utilize as a motivator, yet he advocates it to crowd out distractions. I'm not wildly passionate about getting to grips with the financial side of running a start up, but it is wildly important.

I want to transform my working style into deep-work style. I've been trying to reduce the time until I take actions lately. Once I start my work, I devote myself into single task. Single task is the fastest way for me to deal with my work. Ideally, I finish my work by noon by deep work and spend the rest of a day playing sports, reading books, watching movies and hang out with my friends or family. I will realize this ambition.

Hey Brian love the videos man you seem to condense the whole book into a summary so we can get all the valuable information in 1/10th of the time. Just wondering is it ok to use your videos for the principles in replacement to actually reading the whole book? Reason being I don't have an awful amount of time because I have other academic studies to do as well and since you seem to summarise these books very well I was wondering if it was enough to just watch your videos thoroughly and apply the principles you outline. Thanks.

Hi Brian, I really enjoy learning from your clips and the time and effort that you put into preparing your material. What I really admire is that you really put your message across with passion and care in each of your clips. I recently read a book that is written by a friend of mine. You may enjoy it it's called Canto Libri by Birri Sangha with deep messages and ideas and embracing philosophy, inner journey and learning. Would love to hear your interpretation of it as you are a very ardent student of philosophy. I really liked it and if you prefer I can always send you my copy if your interested but I'm sure you will enjoy and have your interpretation of the text shared in the book. You can DM me on KZbin. Thanks, AJ

+Costas Plassaras It has become VERY obvious that the digital sunset is a Keystone habit for me. So, I crush it. Feeling great every day trumps evening distraction/entertainment/etc. Time block-wise: I have talk about it a little more here (altho it's already changed): kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3XdnGx-psl3kMU Basic idea: Find a chunk of time (can be as little as 30 minutes or 60 or 90 or several hours) and be, as Robin Sharma said in my interview yesterday: MANIACALLY FOCUSED during that time. No distractions. Just crushing it. Optimize is now free! Sign up/tell your friends! www.optimize.me

Having read a couple of chapters of this book. I realised that this book was not that great at all. This book is good for someone who needs a self help kind of an approach or if you are in stage in you life where you need a lot of advice, However if you are in a stage in your life where you had gathered some experience then this book has no value. The author has basically collected a set of anecdotal reference from several places and put it together, in the form of a book. His research are not solid and they simply cross reference several individuals in a way that they palaver to his own thinking. It creates no connect to the reader and at time feels like cacophony of idea put together to say a simple thing. This look is a mere figment of imagination of the author. The author himself is a research scientist and just juxtaposes his working style on the life style of people. This book can seriously damage thinking of a young impressionable, adult who will believe that this "use case" applies in all areas of life, but it doesn't. If you have Business, a job or other areas of work then following this book is chore you wouldn't want to add to your lifestyle. We all know the influence of social media but social media is important when used properly. Its never a binary approach which is what the author recommends. You need to find you own space and thinking.

I am looking at your youtube channel icon, how did you realize the concept of the golden ratio and understand it, developed a true realization to do a practical application of the principle, you place your face almost perfectly 3:7 to top right corner, it looks really good. I am the one that actually do things really relate to it, aesthetics, but it took me a few years to really develop a natural instinct instead treating it as a dead rule. my brain is dead and muddy.

I have a question. It seems that these ideas are great from a man's standpoint. But for a woman, specifically a mom and wife, I have doubts. For example, I would looooove to set routines and "shutdown" to do deep work (wfh mom here), but having children and husband always asking for my attention, this is a challenge. I hope there are productivity books/videos that are more applicable to women like me. Do you know one? Thank you.

Hey Brian I respect your consistency. Do you read a book a day, completed from start to finish? I hear Tai Lopez talk about this, and I know some people are able to read a book a day and comprehend it all. I would love to finish a book in one day. I would need to multiply my time somehow.

+Next Level Thanks! I *could* read a book a day if that was a priority but I spend a lot of time breaking the book down into these videos and PDF Notes + MP3s + interviews with the author + ... So, I read about 3 books a week! :) Optimize is now free! Sign up/tell your friends! www.optimize.me
