Glad to see this series making a comeback and the 2024 rules were a nice touch. I was excited to see how different these builds would be given how much 5e has changed since 2014 with stuff like Tasha’s but this is even cooler. Can’t wait to see who you build next (fingers crossed for Vax or Grog)

My version of Percy is a pact of the blade warlock (hexblade besides being the optimizers choice is thematic imo) who uses CHA for his attacks, and pact magic to emulate the sciency tricks. Ignore EB as a cantrip. Starts of with fighter1 for the con save and the archery fighting style, then goes for the gunner, then the sharpshooter feat asap.

This build feels like gunslinger with extra steps. I think a mostly artificer with some warlock would fit Percy just as well With the artillerist subclass.

@@cmccbuilds8229 if the artificer with a class they had when critical role jumped from pathfinder to 5e he would have just used that with maybe a homebrew feat to firearms proficiency at the time. The artificer has tool expertise for expertise in all tools, right tool for the job magical pulling a tool set out of thin air of flavoured as him pulling them out of a bag of holding, flash of genius adding his intelligence modifier to his or others (in 30 feet) ability checks or saving throws possibly saving vex from her death in the sunken tomb or him shooting a beholder's eye ray saving someone from the effects, spell storing item adding a artificer spell to a weapon or simple item that anyone else can use like giving cure wounds to vax or grog to use themselves, magic items savant have 5 magic items attuned at once and ignoring class or race restraint so the dozens of items they had and struggled to figure out who should have what isn't as bad. The artillerist spell list has thunderwave flavoured as a bomb, Fireball flavoured as a RPG, shattered flavoured as a bomb scorching ray, shield. The arcane cannons are a bonus action 3d8 attack flavoured as a flamethrower or a bad news attack. A extra d8 of damage to 1 spell damage roll when using a firearm as the arcane focus.

Artificer fits better for the character and if it was around when they're transferred from Pathfinder to 5e that's what he probably would have been instead of a homebrew subclass. I think he would have had 9 levels in artificer when we first see him in the underdark then when he hears about the briarwoods before leaving to vasselheim he'll take a warlock level as the voice of orthax is calling him to vengeance so he'll been at this point 10 artificer 1 warlock, using 14 rules for fiend or 24 rules he'll get the subclass after the reveal of Orthax. In the show he didn't get to 13 until after the sunken tomb so using 24 rules it thematically doesn't work as well but Talison could have pulled on that dark scar of orthax during the Revival ritual to threaten The Matron of ravens as his part instead of throwing money at the problem then acknowledging that even though orthax is gone his scar would always be a part of him as a roll play reason for another warlock level.(10 artificer 3 warlock) then he'll most likely go to artificer 15 and maybe 2 levels in fighter for second wind, action Surge and a fighting style. 15 artificer, 3 warlock, 2 fighter. For the artificer subclass artillerist, battle smith or armorsmith all work but I think the battle smith would be best as it gives him extra attack, using intelligence instead of strength or Dexterity for attack rolls, a extra body on the field, arcane jolt a extra 2d6 of force damage per hit or 2d6 of healing on a Ally within 30 feet of the target that being 4d6 at level 15. There spells are good to conjure barrage, shield, Aura of vitality and heroism.

I love that this is back, but i am not a fan of the build. Reflavoring stuff is nice, but is hard to do at the table when you are looking at your character sheets to figure out what you want to do. A spell just ends up being a spell. This is my biggest problem with the idea that 'flavor is free'. Reflavoring is fine, as long as you can consistently do it, otherwise trying to reflavor something that it is not can break immersion, which is more important. Most of the builds i do try to match flavor with relevant mechanics, not reflavoring mechanics as something else.

As a DM I'd certainly homebrew the Gunner feat to remove the "Being within 5 feet of a hostile creature doesn't impose disadvantage on your ranged attack rolls." line and add something that doesn't clash with Sharpshooter. Maybe add a bonus action attack with a one-handed firearm in the style of Crossbow Expert?
