Not a big fan of color wheel projectors , but I will admit the Optoma has overall a better picture then the BenQ . The biggest weakness of DPL projectors is the electric motor spinning at 7.200 rpm with a color wheel at the end of the motor . (few years ago Optoma had a problem with breakage of the spinning color wheel. Great video presentation .

Thanks for an extremely informative video. The UHD50 provides more accurate colors, has deeper black color, but at the 19'08" mark, the BENQ appears to be have more eye pleasing skin tone. Maybe my eyes need to be calibrated. It is also great to see Optoma has the brighter UHD60 and pricing for both the UHD50 and the HT2550 are now lower.

You don't need more brightness in a proper dark room. You won't even use the full 2400 lumens the optoma uhd50 is capable of. You only need more brightness for more ambient lit rooms. The optoma is superior in every way that matters. And if you truly want more brightness. Then turn off eco mode. And use a different setting.

I wonder how their recent offerings stack against each other. I liked the purer white of the benq , but shocked at the difference in colour vibrancy and sharpness. I agree it’ll be an issue of the lens when you compare detail. What’s interesting is when you flip one and zoom in you are zooming in on the edge of the two so this is always going to be a better measure of lens quality than sharpness because lens are always lower sharpness and contrast at the edge and a lower quality lens will always perform badly there. This makes me even more resolute about getting a UHD65 as I’ve had issues with focus on my Epson TW9200.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
The center to edge sharpness is always something to check especially on these new 4K projectors. Most of the true 4K projectors (over 8 million pixels on the screen) have had pretty good lenses as far as even focus goes.I would take the UHD65 over any of the Epsons except the LS10500 which is the Laser. I did however, go with the UHZ65 over the LS10500 as I could have got either at all most the same price!
@bufftheowl6 жыл бұрын
I recently got a new projector; a Sony VW260ES and had a serious issue with focus in the bottom left quarter which turned out to be resolved by using the lens at full wide and bringing the projector closer. Not only was this no doubt better because you’re using more glass to image, but also and probably more importantly because the rear lens when zoomed was push further back and got really close to one of the panels, as unlike my old Epson TW9200’s hexagonal aligned panels the Sony’s reflection style array of panels are spread in an odd fashion with one closest to the lens. So it would seem throwing a small image over a long distance on a Sony can be problematic.

Hi this is a very insightful comparison... I tried to search for the HT2550 on your site and I discovered that you only sell Optoma projectors. Does this in any way affect the integrity of your comparison? It seems like a conflict of interest to me...
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
We are an authorized BenQ dealer but usually only order as needed since they do use the same light engine manufactured by Core Tronics as Optoma does. We did learn however in this case that the end product and lenses can be very different. Even though we have access to both brands we try and find out what we feel is the best value for the money and then recommend it. Not that we would not sell the others but we are a little different in that we only stock what we feel it the best value in a given category. We were not even going to stock the UHD50 until we saw this comparison and when we saw how different they were we decided to stock the Optoma as we had no idea how different it really is. Most of our home theater sales are more custom so we mostly focus on higher end products but I have to say this was an eye opener for us as we had expected they would be very close and they are in fact not.

Thanks, Ted. I appreciate your thoughtful response!
@sage11x6 жыл бұрын
There’s something wrong here. The XPR solution results in significant pixel overlap. You should not be seeing pixel gap in 4K with either of these projectors but in the comparison of the windows shortcuts the UHD50 is clearly showing gaps. Something is up.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Yes, and no, if you are referring to the "fill factor" most DLP projectors are in the 85% to 93% range. Even though they do shift (or wobulate) and then produce other sets of pixels they do not completely eliminate the gaps between the pixels. If you look closely on the other comparisons (high res stills at www.tvspecialists.com/optoma-uhd50-vs-benq-ht2550-4k-projector-comparison-part-i-2/ ) you will see a very slight pixels structure if you are right up at the screen. This is very similar to you flat panel TV, if you get close enough you will see the individual pixels even though they are very very small.

Hey, no problem at all! For me for 4K hdr has a beautiful transition when the option is available. I put it to the test on Netflix (4K + HDR as well as just HDR content) then on Amazon UHD content which was I was really impressed. Also, there's a 'Pure Motion' option in the picture menu which brings a smoothness I never experienced before (sometimes you see a little artefact which varies depending on what content you're watching) 1080p upscale works great!! I first gave it a try with watching Interstellar (Cinema mode) I was soo impressed picture quality/colours (Full Rec 709) If you've had any projectors prior and are upgrading to the Optomo you'll notice a difference 100%. Not too sure if you intend to play any consoles, I have a ps4 PRO which the 4K HDR works beautifully! Currently playing God Of War and the transition between normal vs HDR is really noticeable. There's a small instance of input lag, nothing that's effected game for me, when im playing pes 2018 i do notice it a bit more but still nothing off putting! Hope this information helps! I'm yet to put Blu ray + 3D to the test!

Bit of tweeking of the BenQ in the colour and you’ll get your better reds. The BenQ with its extra brightness will also shoot out further hence bigger picture say 6 to 7 meter wide screen if you have the room. I have a BenQ and my screen is 4.4 meters wide. Love it.

I don't know anyone that would spend over a grand on a projector and not tweak the settings and that's why this comparison fails in my opinion. People might not pay to have a professional come out but they certainly wouldn't use the settings in this video.

Another great review! So the Optoma UHD50 is the newer 4K than the older UHd65. According to specs there is a dramatic difference in contrast ratio - 500,000-1 UHd50 vs 1,200,000-1 on UHD65, as well as lumens 2400 for UHD50 vs 2200 for UHD65. The UHD 50 utilizes rec 709 and BT2020 whereas the UHD 65 has rec 709. Both accept HDR10. They each have a different TI DMD chip 0.47" on UHD50 vs 0.65" on UHD65. Best blacks and deepest, rich colours along with ample brightness are my main concerns in my darkened theatre room, since I assume sharpness and detail should be pretty much equivalent. I'm using a 120" Grandview White screen 1.0 gain. Which projector wins according to what the eye sees in your professional opinion? I'm trying to decide between the two...but I'm leaning towards the UHD51A since it is 3D compatible as well, so best of both worlds. But if blacks and colour are visibly better on UHD65, Ill forgo the 3D and stay with it.
@Tvspecialists6 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the review. Thanks for inquiring about the projectors with us. In regards to your questions, both projectors will have comparable brightness levels in Cinema Mode (UHD65 - 1279 Lumens, UHD51A - 1153 Lumens). The black levels will be better on the UHD65, but without seeing the two side by side, you really won’t notice a difference. Both have amazing color reproduction and both would look great on your screen. It all comes down to if you want 3D or not. If you want 3D, the UHD51A is the projector you’ll want. The UHD51A can also integrate with Amazon Alexa. The UHD65 doesn’t do either. The UHD51A is also less expensive than the UHD65. The UHD51A is $1699 and the UHD65 is $2299. If you don’t need 3D, the UHD65 will give you the better blacks. We hope this answered your questions. If you have any others, please let us know.

I currently have an Optoma HT2550 (I was waiting for the Optoma UHD51a because I LOVE 3D movies but ran out of time and had to order). I am thinking about putting my HT2550 on eBay or CL or something and selling it and buying the UHD51a now that it is released. Do you know if it is brighter than the UHD50 since it has 3D? And if so, does it suffer from the same color loss the HT2550 does? If so I see no need to switch. Also, I don't think I've seen that soft a focus on my HT2550. Maybe there is something up with your lens? Anyway, mine doesn't seem that fuzzy.

It would be interesting to compare these two against the Benq TK800 and the Optima UHD51a, great video BTW, the HT2550 got demolished on 4K content.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Yes, however according to the specs for the TK800 it has the same 1.2X lens as the HT2550. If that is true it would be no contest as the 1.2 lens is only optimized for 1080p content. Even then it is not up to the sharpnes we saw on the Optoma in 1080p but somewhat closer.

I went thru your review fully....but as per mine view...if the same comparison is done after lowering the brightness of the benq ht2550, there's a possibility of both looking same along with the sharpness. Since the Benq is on the brighter side, the sharpness is somewhat lost.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
I understand your thinking, but in this case there was a huge difference at any brightness, of the lens sharpness and ability to focus. I do not know if it was just the random one I was sent (direct and new from Amazon) or if they all have a basic HD lens and not optimized for 4K. I know in the early days of 1080p many projector lenses were not up to the task. it may be a similar situation for 4K as I just tested another 4K model that the lens was fine for HD but not crisp for 4K.

@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
It will depend on your want and need for the better contrast and features of the UHD65. You may also want to consider the UHD51A as it is now shipping as well. If you do not want the larger dark frames of the 50 and 51 and have the budget the UHD65 is definitely the higher quality unit with higher contrast and features.
@helbevega5 жыл бұрын
The optoma 60 and 65 wont fit in my room so need the 50 but I like my projector to be bright but in this video it looked super dim I’m not sure what to do.
@tedbollinger33065 жыл бұрын
So that decision will depend on the screen size and type. If the screen is 120" or less and has a gain of 1.0 or better then the UHD50 will have plenty of brightness if the room is dark. If the room has lights on or outside light in the day then you many need more brightness depending on the screen size.

14:09 is devastating. Is the benq as focused as it can get? What screen size? May not get a benq now, I want sharpness with 4k. Also, you said chip for 3D, I thought it was a lens it passed through to get 3D. Could the 3D be why the benq looks worse?
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
We did the side by side on a Stewart 2.35:1 StudioTek reference 130 so each image is 70" diagonal. We did focus the lens multiple times, it appears that they just used a 1080p optimized lens and called it good as after we found ours looked OK on HD but on 4K it just couldn't keep up we also looked at other reviews in more detail. Sure enough others have also found the lens on the TH-2550 is just not up to the higher resolutions and sharpness of 4K UHD.

what firmware version is it on your HT2550? is it the latest v1.0.3 released in March?
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Good question, we only had it for a few weeks but it came in a new unopened box we received on the 10th of April. We did not check the firmware (great sugestion though) however, no firmware could overcome the poor sharpness and focus of the lens that I know of. ( could however, possibly improve the color)
@fumanhsieh6 жыл бұрын
Yes or no. When watching movies or any video content, the colors are more important to me. Thanks for the side-by-side comparison by the way.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Normally, most people will choose contrast and brightness over color, then color and finally detail and resolution. If contrast and brightness were about the same then yes, most people would prefer the one with better color unless it is obviously soft, lacking detail or sharpness or out of focus.

How's the input lag on these projectors?
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
We did not measure input lag but Projector Central shows a lag of 50 ms which means they are OK for casual gaming but not great for serious on-line gaming.

can you do comparison between uhd50 vs uhd60? btw this video n d other video shows uhd50 vs px727-4k on the clip snapshot. not benq ht2550. why is this?

When you say this video and other videos show UHD50 vs px727-4k on the clip snapshot - where, exactly, are you referring to?

I'm still not understanding. The image 'thumbnail' before it starts playing shows the Optoma on the left and the benq on the right. What logo are you referring to that is white with 3 birds on it?

Thank you for posting this, I have been eager to see a direct comparison, although it is also disheartening, as I have been trying to convince myself to get the benq and enjoy my 3D library for a few more years. Did you happen to test the 3D capability at all? I am buying a projector for 4k blu rays and 4k gaming mostly, so I can only imagine that having 3D will NOT make up for the shortcomings that the benq clearly has in sharpness/contrast. In your opinion, would it justify having 3D over the lack of sharpness on a 135" screen where my main focus will be to enjoy native 4k content? Additionally, do you know if the UHD51 will have full 3D capability? (I have read it will)
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
I would wait till the UHD51A comes out and see if it has the same high quality color as the UHD50. The UHD51A does have full 3D BluRay compatibility as we have been told directly by Optoma. We were totally caught by surprise as we expected the BenQ to be almost identical (except for 3D) as the UHD50. they are not, however on 1080p they are closer but when it comes to 4K and 4K UHD there is simply no comparison, the BenQ lens is simply not up to the task. We expect the UHD51A to come in at about $1,599 when it actually gets introduced any week now.
@chestonjones51286 жыл бұрын
Ted, thank you for the reply. Sounds like it would be in my best interest to hold out for the 51 to hit the shelves. The UHD60 is my other top choice, but I'd like to hang onto that 3D and think I can justify the 51 after seeing this comparison. Thank you so much.

Cheston Jones Optoma's website shows the uhd50 has 3D! Still trying to verify if it's true.
@chestonjones51286 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the UHD50 can handle 3D from a computer, but will NOT take the 3D signal from a blu ray player.

I am interested in upgrading to the UHD40(50) from a Benq W1110(HT2050). How is the black level on these UHD40/300x/350x/51 and contrast compared to my Benq? I fint the contrast decent on my Benq, but the black level is poor.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
The black level on the UHD50 is fair, we have seen much worse and also much better. Without an iris or laser light diming it is very difficult to get real deep blacks on this level of projector.

We'll put it on the list. I can say that I would personally take the 51A over the UHD60 unless the larger grey outline frame is a problem in you situation. The 51A has the RGBRGB color wheel so more saturated accurate color.

How does Optoma UHD51A compares to BENQ HT3550 as far as sharpness goes

Is the UHD 65 significally better than UHD 50? The 80ms input lag of UHD65 really scares me, but I also want the superior color reproduction of this over what UHD 60 can do. It's a big dilemma. Why did Optoma made this projector that you can't turn those interpolations effects off in Game Mode? It makes no sense.
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
The main difference to the UHD65 is the UHD65 has increased contrast and additional resolution due to the higher res native chip and smaller pixels. Unfortunately the large amounts of image processing needed to create the rich color and fine detail does require processing time.

Can you do the optoma 4k vs new benq ht3550?
@tedbollinger33065 жыл бұрын
Possibly in the future, currently we are working on finishing up the Sony 295ES/695ES and the new BenQ HT9060. Thanks for the suggestion we'll keep that in mind.

@@tedbollinger3306 one question. Benq still emitting rainbow effect?
@Tvspecialists5 жыл бұрын
Almost zero, even the two guys in our company that can see DLP rainbows are not bothered and have a very hard time seeing rainbows on the HT9060 due to the lack of a rotating color wheel.

@@Tvspecialists i am confused. Many articles say many projectors are not compeletly 4k. Not true 4k. They all shifting. The cheapest true 4k projector is sony 295es. At 5000$. So the optoma uhd50. 51 . 60. 65 and benq are fake 4k? Can you explain to me?

Seems disappointing to see that the Optoma appears to have dust blobs within the light path...
@tedbollinger33065 жыл бұрын
Sorry, that is our poor image capture, the Optoma has a sealed light path and I think what you are seeing is dust on our camera lens or possibly even on the projector lens, normally the Optoma is "blob" free.

I hate to ask, (although i think i know the answer) , why there is no review or comparison to a cheap viewsonic px747 4k projector?
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
It's more a matter of priorities right now and these videos are being done to help the majority of our customers which tend to focus on the best performance for the investment in the $2K to $10K range. This little Viewsonics has a RGBW color wheel and so it would put the color quality outside of what most of our customers want. (color is somewhat weak and lacking accuracy)

Benq looks better, even I was Optoma fan
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
The BenQ is a great little projector, especially for HD sources. We only began to notice the differences on 4K sources and then the Optoma showed it had a little bit better lens and detail and the HDR handling was clearly an improvement.

Have a question. If the price of Benq TK800 and the XGIMI H2 were the same price, which one would you buy please?
@tedbollinger33065 жыл бұрын
The XGIMI H2 appears to be a 1080p projector with 4K compatibility. this means it can accept and down-res the 4 k image. The TK800 and UHD50 use a 4k DLP chip which can deliver all 8 million pixels to the screen whereas a 1080p projector is only 2 million pixels.

Yes the guys optima through and through, why would he compare the two, i for one have benq better projector, better build quality, i did tests benq won hands down
@tedbollinger33066 жыл бұрын
Not so fast, we also found the BenQ was OK on HD or even some 4K that were really mastered in 2K (you can check on Imdb) but when it came to native 4k sources (files or Bluerays mastered from 4K masters) there is a significant difference in the BenQ we had hear as it was not even close and we had several customers and salesman verify what we had learned. The lenses are not the same and are very very different in their ability to resole 4K detail.
