The Maddox rod test uses a specially constructed device consisting of a series of parallel cylinders that converts a point source of light into a line image. The optical properties of the cylinders cause the streak of light to be situated 90° to the orientation of the parallel cylinders. Because fusion is precluded by the Maddox rod, heterophorias and heterotropias cannot be differentiated. The Maddox rod can be used to test for horizontal and vertical deviations, and, when used in conjunction with another Maddox rod, for cyclodeviations.

Hi, I don't usually comment on things but it is necessary here. The video is great in terms of visual representation and patient perception, however as others have pointed out, there is a mistake in the horizontal deviations section. In the patient view area everything is 100% right: exo deviation= crossed image, eso deviation= uncrossed deviation however in your example, this is only the case if the moddox cyls filter is placed over the right eye. Whereas in your visual representation and key on the side you have clearly stated the filter to be placed over the left eye. Just picture it for your self, imagine you are holding the filter over your left eye, the crossed image would mean the red vertical bar would be on the right side (opposite to filter being in front of left) indicating exophoria; and vice versa the uncrossed image would mean that the red vertical bar would be on the same side as the filter (bar on the left as well the the filter on the left) indicating esophoria. compare the above example with your video. wish you and everyone reading the very best - it'll all click one day lol

This video contains a mistake. An Exo deviation would show a crossed image while and Eso deviation would show an uncrossed image. This video displays this in the opposite manner.

Yes.. they have put it as patient's view.. but it seems to be the examiner's view @01.51

​@@OptometryAcademy so with eso, shouldnt the image in the right eye be perceived on the right and that in the left eye be perceived on the left- so they are uncrossed. in other words, light should be to the right of the red line for eso since its patients view.

Hello, When they perform this test what do they add to bring the line to Orthopohria? For example, you have slight hyperphoria they'll add a lens or something to try and adjust it. Also, what increments will these lenses be in. Many thanks :)

If there is slight degree of hyperphoria and patient is symptomatic. Then we can prescribe him/her prism in his glasses by decentring the optical center of his/her glasses. Decentration of the spectacle lens is done through "prentice rule".

You've tried to explain well but you've made an erroneous blunder.... The results which you show as patient's view will be obtained if the Maddox rod is kept in the right eye... You've shuffled the entire thing.. But I love your way of trying to explain though!
