I'm all in. I switched from an apron to a tunic/baggy pants to fight. I'd love to...find my center? I do "farm woman"; Not a lot of jewelry, and a few more tools. No fancy colors. Also tried it with the narrow strips of cloth to pull off the fabric conservation, but it's a chore; I chose to trim where seams would have been and use wider fabric. Mundanely I absolutely love that purple!! Came back "home" after pandemic and adjusted for a 85lb weight loss. Did even gathers front and back to make it fitted again. Shortened shoulder loops slightly. Tried with underdress as well, but neck hole ended up a bit too big; so I "handed it down. Admireable card weaving! My festoon is messy and has most colors; but my Sprout wishes to return to Pennsic as their own bad self. LOL So I have to find the new colors for them. They plan to mix styles. Mom here has some sewing to do! When I started I used sinew for my festoon; but after it breaking a few times 👀 I now use wire. 👍👍 Thank you!!!

I actually did a bit of a deep dive into the whole gay Vikings thing and I found something out thanks to a book that Gunnora Hallakarva was published in (I forget the title but she has a website so you can look up her contributions separately if you haven't already and you want to) Simply put they (like most other non-Abrahamic ancient cultures) don't seem to have given much of a f*ck if you wanted to have sex with people other than your spouse, regardless of gender. The only person you had to answer two was your partner. There was some stigma around having kids out of wedlock, but not really for moral reasons more for practical ones. The argr thing - that's from the culture of sexual domination of foes, the whole rape & pillage thing. So basically a guy who was a bottom in the relationship was seen as weak and submissive, which were big insults in the context of the culture, hence why a guy who was accused of that had the right to smack the sh!t out of whoever said that about him, to prove he was able to do so. It wasn't so much that the issue was being gay, it was with being submissive, the kind of man who would hide behind their boyfriend instead of fighting his own battles. I thought that was pretty interesting!

Oh, the tablet weaving is great! Morgan Donner has a video series where she's re-creating the Herjolfsnes Greenland gown and she uses the tablet cards to weave a hem in one of the videos, but it was great seeing a setup that allows easier tracking of the strings and also more complexity
@OpusElenae3 жыл бұрын
Tablet weaving definitely has both practical and decorative uses in the early medieval period especially. This particular rig would not be well suited to the Herjolfsnes type hemming that uses tablet weaving, but is great for more decorative weaving.

It looks great! I’m getting ready to make my own version. The interpretation that I’ll be using involves the tablet woven strip having had a strip of linen between the wool and tablet woven band. Linen being plant fiber, would have deteriorated in a way leaving no trace behind. BI read that the warp and weave of the wool the Kostrup dress was made with would have been a very…fraying fabric, so a strip of linen would have been a way of securing. 🤔

Beautiful work, as always. Haven't got up yet, so no tea for me. The pleated section is quite narrow, compared to others I've seen. Was this your personal preference for fit, dictated by the amount of fabric you had, or for some other reason? The detachable piece of tablet weaving is really interesting, and allows for swapping out this element to suit the occasion or as your skill level improves.

It was Pride month, several of us were making Pride-themed outfits.

@@OpusElenae I’m new to these definitions , but being sexually attracted to the one we love is considered Queer? I think that’s a straight thing as well.
@OpusElenae4 ай бұрын
@@SaffronHammer no, but not experiencing ANY sexual attraction unless you have an emotional bond is.

This makes total sense. As a Norse pagan it annoys me that white supremacists and conservatives transpose those restrictive norms of Abrahamic religions into mine. According to Norse folklore, Thor had his hammer Miolnir stolen by ice giants. To retrieve it, he literally dressed as a woman and killed them off guard, thus making him somewhat of the transgender God.

I was considering subbing after your Brigid's cap video (because damn that was pretty), but let me tell you, I hit that sub button faster than the speed of wikipedia editors when you said essentially "fuck fascists"

What does this have to do with making a viking apron dress? I ĥave no problem with people being gay or part of the LGBTQ community. I wanted to see you make the dress.

Lucky for you I did make the dress.

Do bear in mind that Loki was in fact depicted in the Poetic Edda's as a gender fluid Omnisexual deity (and was ODIN's sibling, not Thor's). So yeah, the Northmen were far more progressive in their attitudes towards gender and sexuality than the Christian colonizers who sought to surpress any culture that did not hold to their Poisonous Patriarchy and Toxic Masculinity ideals... Also... KITTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! **snugglepets**

You want a good example of where gender roles set in the Viking age look up everything on Loki. He was trans. They didn't have the beliefs like we have in our society now. Christianity has played a lot and changing how people look at the lgbtq community. I'm trans but I'm also a shield Maiden. But I'm also twin chimera. I was born with both genders. Keep up the awesome videos they are very cool

I’m reading a really interesting paper right now on the role of magic (specifically seidr) in the concept of argr and why Odin and Loki had very different social standings despite both practicing!
