"The Fountain"...probably my overall favorite Genesis song. Fabulous playing and Steve's solo at the end is perfection.

Gotta love Mike's comment at 11:28! "I think Pete enjoyed having, uh, *cough* Phil singing".

My favourite is Steve Hackett, but my 1st favourite song chronologically was Of Absent Friends and Harlequin, the two shortest and most unfairly disliked songs on Nursery Cryme. I Didn't even know PC was the lead singer of the former at the time!

Unique band ..I had a love hate relationship with them...still unique to this day with Gabriel!

Mike and Tony talk very fast typical British pace. Pete seems to talk more slowly and yet he was the lead singer.

I don't know about "typical British pace" - I'm English and to me they still talk very quickly, so quick that sometimes I miss what they say.

First time I realised the influence of The Who's music on _Musical box!_
@drasticwillb12 жыл бұрын
As an American in the 70's the thought of British people came down to the smug carefree Beatles, the smash up motel rooms and raucous gravely accents like the Who. And then way over on the other end of the spectrum is Buckingham Palace stiff upper lip and bowler hats. Musical Box came as a shock when I first heard it because I thought all British rockers were at odds about the proper British feel.

Ironically, both bands had guitarists who played sitting down. I always thought that was just weird.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to Genesis had Steve stayed in the bed. He wasn't all anti-commercial. Listen to the GTR stuff.

me too, but the majority would not - genesis is so extremely damn good music, complete pearls for swine

Have to agree on that one ,it seems like he just wanted genesis to do more instrumental pieces in general which is not really their Forté

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway had to be Genesis' last great album before Gabriel left and Collins replaced him and the band turned pop. It is interesting how most Americans respond when the mere mention of Genesis comes up, and many think Phil Collins while the rest of the world acknowledges Peter Gabriel as the nominal member of the band.
@JeffJefferyUK10 жыл бұрын
That's kind of absurd. It's not like they turned pop overnight. A Trick of The Tail and Wind And Wuthering are hardly pop albums. Even And Then there Were Three had plenty of expansive prog moments on it, come to think of as do albums such as Duke and Genesis.

If you watch and read enough interviews you'll find that the whole band had grown bored with the prog cliches and were searching for new things to do.
@scruffyapples3 жыл бұрын
Listen to their first track with Phil as lead singer: Dance On A Volcano. It’s pure prog. It’s not pop. Genesis can be far more easily divided into the Hackett and non-Hackett years.
