Thank you. Your video allowed me to fix my OralB iO series 6 that was 4 months old. Like many comments below, the magnetic head detached from the shaft. I little tip I discovered to get the head back on correctly was to soak the magnetic head in acetone and using a fine, sharp and strong needle, dig out the old epoxy. This took a while and multiple soakings in acetone. Once all the old epoxy was removed I added one drop of super glue on the shaft and reattached the magnetic head. It is working perfectly now. I rang OralB US. They never followed up with email as promised. I emailed them and after explaining what was wrong, their response was "no receipt, no warranty. We will send you a $10 discount voucher." Are you kidding me OralB. $120 toothbrush that breaks after 4 months and they drag their feet and then offer $10. What a joke and what poor customer service. Once again, thank you as you saved me throwing away the toothbrush.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yes somehow both Philips and Braun are shooting in to their own foot with this no spare parts policy.. the brushes are well designed and really repairable but company policy makes it impossible. I believe the biggest problem is that a lot of times people don't see that they are throwing away the magnetic head that is ripped off with the brush head.. toll now all the people that asked my help didn't had the head with them, always thrown away..

It’s so annoying that Braun (P & G) do NOT provide spare parts. This (Io9) toothbrush is $749 recommended retail in Australia and I think it is indefensible of Braun to not provide parts. My wife’s brush has the detached shaft problem, and from my examination it would be a simple job to replace the part if all other components are working. Thank you for your video and spending time putting it together. I know there are No parts in Australia, no parts in the US. What about the EU, surely this policy contradicts the EU approach to sustainable production practices?
@letsfixitgarage8 ай бұрын
sadly no parts in EU as well... hopefully it will change if Right to repair will get a stronger foot in regulations. But at this moment service centers think that users are not qualified to desolder 2 points on a motherboard...
@jzonneveld9849Ай бұрын
Perhaps a spot welder will do the trick...the kind they use for spotwelding clips on batteries. But my pick will be is to buy a new IO3 on sale and desolder the complete part drive-shaft-seal-etc (as shown in the video) from the mainboard to be used on the IO9. Do not buy the IO2 as I've been told that it uses an other motor/drive...but I can not confirm it though.

Spotwelder for batteries is to weak for this job.. Tig welder would do the job but there is no place to get in and leveling it out would be a pain as well... Good idea for "brand new" parts ;) yes IO drives are identical but same as you didn't had Io 2 in my hands...

Your videos are very informative and easy to understand. I say this as someone who's only been exposed tangentially to the secret world of electronics. I've seen that many of your videos are focused on smart toothbrushes. As a software developer, I can only evaluate the two from the perspective of code and app functionality and feel that both oral b and sonicare are almost identical in that regard. How would you evaluate these two in terms of hardware. Do you feel like one of them has a superior design over the other ( more elegant , resilient , etc .)
@letsfixitgarage2 жыл бұрын
I would say that technically they are both top of the line. In Philips they use the same electromagnetic drive on almost all of their brushes for quite some time, even the cheapest and they are more repairable. IO is quite new. now when they introduced the electromagnetic drive I would say they are on the same page as Philips maybe even better but no idea how it will show in the long run and how available the spare parts will be.. at this moment I would choose Philips as they are longer on the market with this technology and spare parts are all over the internet. But the best would be to try both and see which you prefer as they feel quite differently..

I have two: IO7 and IO9. When the battery issues started, I got the replacements. I put them inside, and both toothbrushes worked fine, and the seal membranes were not damaged. But just after 2-3 days, one died, and the other could not pass the Hello launcher. I opened both of them - a lot of the liquid inside. Two questions: 1. Could it be that the liquid caused some short circuit, which is not repairable (unless you replace the motherboard)? 2. What I understood is that although you can open this kind of toothbrush for battery replacement, in most cases, you cannot put them back with the waterproofing you had initially. So it just doesn't make an immense sense. Thank you in advance for your reply!

After 2 years my Oral-b 8N started to sound weird. The whole thing vibrates like crazy but the brush head is not spinning as fast as it should. Battery is draining much faster and the area around the display goes warm (not hot) after 3 minutes of use. I tried to soak the rod in warm water but didn´t help at all. It looks like no matter what brush head I use (new or old) its just not sitting tight enough on the rod, its too loose. Same thing happened to my Philips Sonicare, vibrations got very strong but the cleaning effect was near to zero :(
@letsfixitgarage Жыл бұрын
With Philips it's much easier.. have few videos explaining how to fix that issue. Regarding IO I speak in this video about shaft breaking off the motor. This looks to be it in your case. Open it up and check if the shaft is still connected to the electromagnetic drive. Sadly there are no spare parts by Braun. If you're from Europe you can write me an email maybe I can help you.
@Saterik82 Жыл бұрын
I've had one for just gone 12 months and found it to be broken when I went to put the brush head on. It looks like the magnetic piece came off and stayed inside the brush head, which then results in it not spinning/vibrating properly. Having watched your useful video, it looks like this might be somewhat fixable if I take it to part and then perhaps use some kind of epoxy to attach back to the metal rod. Do you think that would work? I've always found electric toothbrushes don't last, so I'd been extra careful about looking after and cleaning this one!
@letsfixitgarage Жыл бұрын
If it's only 1 year contact the seller for warranty. Braun replaces it with new one in warranty period. I doubt that epoxy would hold. There is a lot of vibrations and even the magnetic head that is epoxy glued in factory sometimes comes off.. so to glue the shaft and then to get it straight.. seems quite difficult but is you succeed make a video ;) I think a lot of affected users will be glad to see this solution.

Difficult to say as I haven't had series 3 in my hands but series 6-9 don't have any anti opening protections.. you can open and close it as many times as you want the same is true for battery.. if you had to replace the battery initially, I would look for problems on the board. I took the bottom of mine to replace the battery and the ceramic piece (I believe) had cracked into two. I put it back together without the spring and the ceramic and it doesn’t charge quickly so I’m assuming the ceramic piece is required for the charging to operate. it does seem to charge but it probably 1/10 of the rate of when new. My issue is the shaft broke at the epoxied location, but I tried gluing it back (with epoxy) and that didn’t fix the problem. Looking at the brush head, the magnet inside moves up and down when you manually rotate the head, so that makes me think the whole magnetic piece in the handle should go up and down. Is that correct? What might make it stop moving in that direction, but still vibrating? Thanks! Does the Series 9 have the same motor as any lower priced models?
@letsfixitgarage10 ай бұрын
yes epoxying it back is not as straight forward as it seems.. it could be that you put to much of the glue ant head didnt got all the way in its original place.. i was thinking that first you should make a groove on the epoxy inside of the head for the excess of the glue to escape. and when the head sticks out its not able to give vibrations to the brushing head as it should..

Difficult to say, try to dry it out and insert charged Battery if your lucky maybe that's all it takes. If no there could me motherboard damage I would not exchange the screen they are very fragile better to exchange complete motherboard..

Now if i did poke a hole in the micro mesh seal.. how would you fix this?
@lovestop101 Жыл бұрын
I always charged my IO in the charging case it came with.. but it would charge to 100% and not turn on when I took it out. I just opened the other charger (where the bottom of the charger opens the bottom of the toothbrush) and it seems with this method the toothbrush turns on automatically).. i stupidly thought the mesh seal was a reset button and heard a little pop
@lovestop101 Жыл бұрын
Could I just cover the external side of the mesh seal hole completely?
@letsfixitgarage Жыл бұрын
Well the mesh is there for a reason. I assume some water gets in and it escapes through the mesh. Would suggest to open it up and carefully remove the mesh sticker and reapply it pushed a little bit sideways. Not sure if functionallity will be 100% as original but I would give it a try. you can cover the hole with hot glue anyday ;)

My magnetic head rips out with the toothbrush head every time I take it off. I then have to remove it with tweezers and attach it back. What type of epoxy do you recommend to glue it back and is it necessary to disassemble the tooth brush to glue it. I have contacted oral b and they refuse to send a replacement because I don't have the receipt. It was a Xmas gift. Jerks.
@letsfixitgarage Жыл бұрын
Additionally I would add some grooves to the shaft and maybe inside of the head for better "traction" I would disassemble it. It's easier to check that it goes all the way in. If glue will prevent to go all the way down it will stick out and brush head will either not sit right or get damaged using it...

Hi so hopefully you can help me out. I just got the i09. I put in a new head and it won't spin. The brush turns on and vibrates and everything. I haven't gotten another head to see if that's the problem. But I'm wondering is that magnetic cylinder piece connected to the drive supposed to move when you turn on the brush or just vibrate?
@letsfixitgarage8 ай бұрын
It's very small, but strong movement/vibration. Try to place a finger on top and press down to see if the ring light changes (imitate pressure on the teeth: this brush has to low, optimal, and to strong pressure lights) if you feel strong vibration and lights are changing Problem is in the head. Maybe it didn't go all the way down or maybe it is defective..

@letsfixitgarage9 ай бұрын
If there would be spare parts I would say IO is even easier to repair then older ones easier to exchange the components, but there are no parts to get... As for the mold IO has bigger gap for toothpaste to build up so yes it's more likely to get it and it's more fragile, if droped upper plastic part breaks easily metal shaft is fragile as well.. but it is more silent, stronger vibrations, faster charging and housing is of hard plastic. Genius series had problems with rubber housing getting mold or peeling off.. everything breaks but in my opinion genius is sturdier then IO..
@Stihl_OK9 ай бұрын
@@letsfixitgarage Thanks for your reply. I bought a Genius 8000. I like everything so far. After use, I wash it, wipe it with a towel, and leave the handle open in a dry place, I think that this way there will be minimal chances for mold.

@letsfixitgarage Жыл бұрын
Nope. Only braking it. It can be that some toothpaste accumulated in the gap and it prevents to easily twist it. But chrome will get damaged and additionaly the cap can be broken...

If it has to be the complete engine, I don't care either!! I can't find anything on the internet to be able to buy spare parts for these brushes. Thank you very much for your answer.
@letsfixitgarage2 жыл бұрын
Yes, as said in video this brush success will strongly depend on Braun philosophy with spare parts I have asked local Braun representative for their comment on this, but haven't received anything till now. For now I believe the fastest way would be to look for a broken brush on eBay.. what about your defect was it like in this video where magnetic head came off the shaft or did the whole shaft ripped out of the electromagnetic drive? Did it fall or any gues why it broke? Im quite interested in finding out the reason for this defect..
@ivantizon19772 жыл бұрын
@@letsfixitgarage The magnetic head simply came off and fell down the drain. I am looking for neodymium magnets of the same diameter and try to make a hole in the center (this is complicated and almost certainly the magnet will break) and glue the motor shaft with epoxy... Not having the magnet I don't know the average in millimeters of the diameter and the height of the same to search. Do you know the measurement of the magnet approximately in millimeters??? Thanks a lot!!
@letsfixitgarage2 жыл бұрын
No till now I haven't tried to brake down the epoxy.. need to look up what is the best method.. as said I bought few from eBay with ripped off shafts with heads.. I believe this could be a serious problem so you should be able to find some on eBay as well should be easier as to make your own.. especially that the magnet will not be enough, it should have a metal cap so it wouldn't get damaged or losen from the same Epoxy...
