His Space Shuttle test flights still keep me on edge. The pressure to test fly (glide) a multi-billion dollar machine with NASA's and the whole nation's prestige on the line. I dont know how he remained so calm (and he did five test flights).

But for one banged up oxygen tank, Fred would have walked on the Moon. What a legend.

Crew assignments were pretty convoluted and also subject to other factors. Elliot See and Charlie Bassett pranged their plane into the McDonnell building, that. Freddo knew his LM about as good as any man alive. I think he kind of got robbed. Remember, Al Shepard popped back onto active flight duty after 7 or 8 years and being head of the Astronaut office immediately assigned himself as Commander of the next moon landing. That’s a dick move. Mr. Haise would have commanded 18 or 19 probably, but Proxmire and congress kept killing off the missions. Another dick move. 50 years later they plan on re-creating Apollo 8. Yay. Or something.

I met him at the 1984 Grumman family pic Nic in St. Augustine, FL. What a neat man he is. Told us about Apollo 13 and flying Enterprise.
