Quick correction! I would like to clarify the table at the end of the video at 22:00. Increasing kVp increases the relative number of photons (quantity) and therefore increases the intensity of the x-ray beam... therefore, the resultant image has increased density. Increasing kVp also increases the mean energy of the beam (quality) which means the beam has more penetrating power... therefore, the resultant image has decreased contrast. Increasing filtration decreases the relative number of photons (quantity) and therefore decreases the intensity of the x-ray beam... therefore, the resultant image has decreased density. All of this is correct as shown in the table! However, this last point I want to make a correction. There are some nuances related to noise and scatter that convolute the issue, so instead I would encourage you to remember this: increasing filtration also INCREASES the mean energy of the beam (quality) by preferentially filtering out the lower energy photons which means the beam has more penetrating power... therefore, the resultant image has DECREASED contrast, not increased contrast.

I don’t understand why you say that an increase of filtration increase the quality of an image but decrease the contrast.

Hi Ryan . I am a oversea student , when I came Us , English is the second language it’s mean I have study double . I was keeping watching your video every day , everytime I can ( I still work full time and study) . I passed today ! Thank you so much for sharing because Covid times , no school , no one teaching me . Thanks Ryan 🙂!

Hey Ryan, As always great videos with excellent information given in nut shell. In the last slide, the table is stating "Energy" and in the same column it is mentioned about the "contrast". But as you said they don't go hand in hand. You mentioned in the previous slide/comment.. about Higher KVP and Higher Filtration will lead to "Higher Energy" photons. So with "Higher KVP" -- "Energy" of the photons will "Increase" -- and "Contrast" will "Decrease" (as there is more penetrating power)
@mentaldental3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct! With both higher kVp and more filtration, there are less low-energy photons and the contrast will decrease as a result.

Hello Ryan! I have been watching and taking notes from your videos. Do we also need to know the basics of Biochemistry, Physiology and Microbiology? And how to plan the schedule if I had only only 2 months along with my masters course going on.

Thank you for your comment, and I hope the videos have been helpful for you! Yes, there are some basic science questions covered on the board exam. I am actually teaching a live Biochemistry class this coming Saturday, July 22nd if you are interested. You would need to register fairly soon though if you wanted to attend.

If more energy causes more contrast, then acc to the last table why does the contrast decreases with increase in the tube potential?
@mentaldental4 жыл бұрын
More energy does not cause more contrast. On the tube potential slide, I talk about how a higher peak kilovoltage corresponds to lower contrast and a lower peak kilovoltage corresponds to higher contrast. This matches with the table found at the end of the video.

Dr. Ryan, I searched for contrast meaning using KZbin videos and I found that high contrast refers to more differences between the darkness and lightness results in more dark images and the lower contrast means less differences resulting in more lightish image. However, I saw opposite example mentioned in the lecture. Can you please help me to solve my confusion?

That is the correct definition of contrast. Where in my lecture did I give an opposite example?

@gjessica8922 жыл бұрын
Sorry at the end I meant you mention on here the distance between the source and object is better increased
@maryamnakisa3 жыл бұрын
when they don't say which distance they mean,we consider it as distance between source and object?(for calculating the effect for density)

Yes, that's correct! When not specified, they are talking about distance from the source.

Current- Flow of Electrons from Filament to Anode to filament. 🤔🤔 I have a visionary of the X ray tube and its components, and am having difficulty with the concept of current. Can anyone help me here? 🙏🙏
@baburali82304 жыл бұрын
You said increased energy results in higher energy photons which increases contrast. Then you said increasing Tube Potential increases both energy and intensity, therefore shouldn't increasing Tube Potential increase density AND contrast? Why does contrast decrease with increased Tube Potential?
@mentaldental4 жыл бұрын
I said that increased tube potential causes an increase in intensity and energy. Increased intensity leads to higher density, while increased energy leads to LOWER contrast. This is reflected in the last slide of the video.
@123jay456youknowY4 жыл бұрын
@@mentaldental I had the same question too. If filtration increases mean energy, why doesn't it lower the contrast?
@mentaldental4 жыл бұрын
@@123jay456youknowY You know what, you're absolutely right. There are some nuances related to scatter and noise, but I would like to revise the chart at the end. Adding filtration (generally speaking) removes the lower energy photons and increases the penetrating power of the x-ray beam (quality) thereby reducing contrast. Thank you for pointing this out!
