I rockhound and explore the Desmont Mine outside of Wilberforce, Ontario, Canada. I am searching for Molybdenum but end up finding Molybdenum and lots of bright Orange Calcite. Join me on this mineral & crystal collecting adventure while I explore this Highlands East mine claim.
Collect, rock hound, explore, dig and hike at your own risk

Hi Jeff. Really old Geologist here. Your vid came up in my feed and I was pleased to see you prospecting around my old stomping grounds. I grew up in Renfrew County, around Golden Lake and haven't been back in years. Back in the late 80's, I went with a prospecting buddy up to his claims a bit west of there. He had orange calcite veins full of apatite crystals which we would mine using feather and wedges. He'd get the glassy bits cut into gems and sold them for profit. I suspect that green crystal you had there was apatite. His veins didn't have any Moly in them (the cool kids don't bother trying to pronounce it, we just call it 'Moly.' That mineral you recovered is actually MolybdenITE, from which molybdenum is extracted. Much like chalcopyrite gives you copper and pyrite gives you iron (if you are willing to take a financial loss), molybdenite gives you 'moly' which is mostly used in the stainless steel industry. Interesting but useless fact: There is actually enough moly produced as a by-product of other base-metals mining (Sudbury, Noranda, Norilsk...) that primary deposits of moly are unprofitable to mine. If you managed to put one into production, you would swamp the supply chain and the price would tank. Looking forward to more of your content. Cheers.

I like it "Moly" much easier than remembering the whole name. It's nice to have a Geologist giving feedback and comments, any thoughts on what gives this Calcite the Orange color?

I love that orange calcite, very beautiful colour. It would make great specimens if you could find them intact, on matrix. Kind of reminds me of Serendite from St. Hilaire, at least the colour. I would love it if you showed your personal mineral specimen collection. It would be great to see what your best specimens look like when trimmed & cleaned up. The diopsides were also cute.

Another spot to add to the list. Just spent a gorgeous day at the Beryl Pit and found some cool specimens thanks to your trip you posted recently. Keep up the great vids!

I know a great mine close to the Gatineau Park... with flakes of molybdenum. It's soft and greasy... Very nice findings. Thanks for the video.

@@OffTheBeatenPathCrystals The molybdenum flakes are really big. There is nice pyrite. Some weird calcite, not orange though. It's not too far from St Pierre de Wakefield; Leduc mine, McGlashan, ... . 40 minutes, next time you visit the area. 🙂

Spent the day at Desmont today with my son. We found so many wonderful pieces in three different sites but we weren’t able to find the audit. Is it possible that it’s filled in? It’s no longer on the map that one receives when you apply for the permit. The hunt continues 🙏

Another great video Jeff! We bumped into eachother at the miller mine Saturday evening. What an honor it was to meet such a rockhounding and KZbin LEGEND! Thanks to you I now know what Titanite looks like and I'm happy to say I finally found some and went home with 3 or 4 small speciems. Orange calcite is very pretty! I have recently collected nice speciems of it at Faraday roadcut along with blue apitite and tremolite. I do highly recommend a visit there as I think you may find some nice additions to both your new rock garden and personnal collection. I look forward to meeting you agian!

Thanks Jeff! My girlfriend said you're like Houdini. You litterly appeared out of nowhere and then just vanished when you left haha. I was hoping you'd stick around Sunday morning but Faraday is a good spot and I'm glad you finally checked it out! The blue apitite is located along the wall face towards top of hill on the left side when facing uphill. There you will find pockets with tremolite and blue apitite. As mentioned on Saturday I have a spot for some large smokey quartz clusters that would be a great addition to your rock garden. If you're interested let me know and I'll find away to get you the coordinates

The orange calcite makes nice cabochons. There's a couple sites were you find them here in Austria as well and they polish up really nicely, they have so much depth to them.

Hi Jeff, I think it's molybdenite you mean... molybdenite is ore of molybdenum.... sporting a beard like that you should have no problem with this mineral name. Moleb-denite, or moleb-denum, the beard is working, does the tongue? I think Desmont is a vast mysterious place with places yet undiscovered. I found neat little pyrites just like you did in clinopyroxene, millimeter sized crystals. The orange calcite is so nice! Cool video Jeff thanks for showing us. Lloyd.

No bears yet. I do carry bear spray most of the time just encase. I get a bit nervous playing at the Saranac Zircon occurrence, it's right beside a dump surrounded by forest where bears have been sighted.

Thank you for the suggestions. I had fun digging and getting all muddy. I went to Smart mine. I'm surprised I fund it easily, just by following your steps. I was so happy when I found the donation mailbox. On my way home I went to titanite hill too. I liked it better. I found a piece of a geode with red crystals. Someone said it was zircon. Is there zircon there? 🤔 @@OffTheBeatenPathCrystals
