In my experience, solid state is better at lower frequencies than tube. My non-scientific guess is probably having to do with the fact that for most solid and tube amps of a similar perceived volume, the solid state has more RMS wattage. While the tube can be driven into pleasing distortion in the mid and high frequencies, that does mean that the solid state has more clean power, and for lower frequencies, they need that energy to move. Consider that most bass amps these days are class D solid state these days. You can't beat clean RMS wattage when it comes to low frequencies.

All transistor amps sound tighter which is more ideal if you want to cut through a mix right.
@mountainpeakcloud8442 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the mix, and depends on the frequencies. A tube amp will cut through the mix just fine if the frequencies are dialed to cut. The tightness is just more of a tonal preference depending on the type of music you're playing... but it's not difficult to add tightness to a slightly looser tube amp with a boost.

@lolaa22002 жыл бұрын
The early version of ss amps where just using schematics of tube amps but replacing each triod with a bjt transistor (e.g. : fender ss 80's silverface). No surprise that sucks. But if a competent EE design a solid state amp from scratch no wonder he can totally achieve same tone as tube amps and in many way outperform it. Big company like fender and Marshall just did not bother to hire competent EE and/or leave them freedom to do the right thing. Add to that very often they where sold paired with shitty speakers and no wonder ss amps got bad rep.

The low end and the brightness of the amps has nothing to do with transistor or tubes. If you take another tube amp like the Dark terror 15w and a rockverb 50, you'll hear a difference in how the amplifiers processes the sound. At least, this is my experience by testing them out. 😅 We have a wrong perception of solid states by listening to smaller cab amps for studio or home use like 15w starter cheap amps, but actually many solid states with bigger cabs are proper amps that can be used with bands. It depends on the circuits of the amp :)

then all you need is an eq in the fx return. Fixed

@@MK-oz2lf maybe, I'd like to heat it first. But again, due to cost, might be worth it to gig with so yiu don't risk any damage or theft to the expensive tube head.

Steve Albini uses a homemade amp head that combines a Fender Bassman with a Carver Solid-State Amplifier: both worlds

I liked the super crush better. The transient was a bit punchier on the chugs. Both were nice and chewy in the mids.

Any suggestions what cab to get? I have no experience in swapping speakers.. had a ppc412 and I didn’t like it that much. Now I have an old H&K 412 with 12L35‘s from 1993. Like the sound of em, but stand no Chance against the other Guitarist with a Diezel amp..

For me, both sounds have a high similarity to a old tubes combined with a torn-up speaker. Not saying it sounds bad (as that is ofcourse always subjective), but i dont see many usefull applications myself ;)

I've been wanting to add a super crush to my amp collection. I think a solid state amp is a good idea to own as well. all I have are tube amps. what if shit hits the fan and tubes become actually difficult or impossible to get?! id like to know i have a shit hit the fan backup amp and right now I do not. I have a hybrid amp (one of those tiny joyo zombies) but its not enough to handle what I need by a long shot. it sounds pretty okay for recording tho.

Ok but do you have them both running through the same cabinet??? If not you’re hearing the difference in the cab and speakers.

I have one and I use it with two 4x12s and it sounds killer at low volumes, how ever the DI out is also REALLY good with the other "closed" back option button for DI out, it doesn't work for basic amplifier setups but I run my line 6 pod go into the back with my pre amp mode on my modeler into the return of FX loop and it just sounds and feels very tube like I'm happy with mine I'm gonna get another!

I put a GE7 in the loop for a bit more bottom and presence, gets ya even closer.
