Orange in high vs low humidity

In this time-lapse video, I compare the decomposition process of an orange in two different environments - normal humidity and high humidity. Surprisingly, the orange in the normal humidity environment started to grow mold faster than the one in the high humidity environment, which was kept in a plastic box. While this may be an anomaly, it raises some interesting questions about how different environments can affect the decomposition of organic matter.

@@ferninthehouse I'm thinking that is because this time the black mold got to grow first (which, if I'm not mistaken, is very dangerous), and was fighting the white/green mold instead. Or something with the chemicals it releases. And if you would've opened the whole orange, you might've been in for a nasty surprise

That's actually the reason why for a long time people used to believe in the idea of spontaneous generation, aka the theory that living things (especially microbes) can spontaneously generate from non-living or dead matter. They saw things like worms, maggots, mold, and bacteria suddenly "appear" from rotting fruit and meats and thought that they spontaneously arose from the matter of those rotting foods. It wasn't until Louis Pasture finally definitively proved in the mid-19th century through experimentation that living things must arise from other living things (aka biogenesis).

Yes it is! It also makes sense that people in the middle ages used to believe in spontaneous generation - that rotten fruit would spontaneously bring fruit flies into the universe. Of course we know about eggs and spores now, but it does seem like they come out of nowhere!

My hypothesis: the orange in the higher humidity stayed fresh longer due to bacteria on the surface surviving and keeping the mold at bay, sort of like how our skin is colonized by staph bacterias to prevent worse germs from gaining a foothold. Would be an interesting science fair project for sure. What was your setup for the high humidity box?

Maybe that's why. Definitely an interesting though. But I also think the one in the normal humidity was a type of orange that's prone to going bad quickly, because it spoiled much faster than a normal orange would. The high humidity setup was a plastic box with lid on. The orange made the air humid. The camera was also in the box and functioned as a heater too

I mean, not really. Flies lay eggs in the fruit, maggots hatch and grow from being too small to see to being visible. We just don't see the flies because they move too fast for the time lapse.

I think it's a coincidence. Normally oranges last much longer, as the text in the video stated. This one must have already been slightly damaged, whereas the one in high humidity just wasn't.
