As a veteran professional guitarist/bassist/vocalist, I can honestly say that this is one of the best vids I've seen in a long time. Straight to the point, articulate and very informative - exactly how reviews should be done. Over 80k views and only a few hundred likes...such a shame. Keep on, good sir!

A lot of guys (myself included) will use a tubescreamer in front of an overdriven amp to get a tighter thrashy sound. Not so much to add gain, but just hit the front of the amp a bit harder and compress the bottom end a touch to tighten up palm muting rhythm playing. I prefer to do it this way and leave my amp a bit more "classic" hard rock/metal and use pedals for gain staging for different styles.

I've had the OR15 out at a few gigs including a jam I hosted where lots of guitar players played my amp with their pedal boards and I have to say it takes overdrive pedals extremely well. Seems to like TS style od's best but fuzz and distortion pedals also seemed to be right at home! I keep the amp set dirty and use my guitar volume to clean up and od's to push it over the edge. Had a few guys that preferred the amp cleaner & all gain came from od's. I enjoyed the tones in both configurations!

Wow a 7-string player that actually understands how a guitar works! You're amazing, very encouraged to see someone that doesn't rely on drop tunings to make it "brvtal" but ends up sounding talentless.

Hey there! I have a Glenwood 1x12 that it sounds great with. The 2x12 probably is a little "bigger" sounding but this amp has shined with every cab I tried it with. Including a 4x12 with 25watt Greenbacks. I personally like the sound dispersion of more speakers, so if you have the budget for the 2x12, I say go for it! But check it out with both cabs. I think you'll be surprised how good it sounds with the 1x12 too. Good luck!

I think it is, but I'm a medium-gain metal player. I like an amp to respond to the dynamics of my picking. If I ever need more, usually a Tubescreamer does me right. Not necessarily for more gain, but the touch of compression it ads is still dynamic and puts a touch of hair on it too.

It is a bit different and the second channel is nice to have. What I've been doing on gigs with the OR15 is using a BOSS Volume pedal to cut the guitar output, making a faux clean channel and just open it up for a boost or more crunch. From there I have a couple of overdrives to push it over the edge. Pretty effective way to deal with a single channel amp!

Thanks so much! I have played the Tiny Terror and it is a cool amp. I think the OR15 was a little more of a "classic rock" vibe and for me, that works great. Still has plenty of gain too! Not they the Tiny Terror won't clean up. It just has a bit of a different character to it. I'd test them side by side to see what you like better!

Depending on the sound you're going for, yes. Might want to use a distortion pedal with it though if you want a more scooped, thrashy sound. I personally like lower gain and plenty of mids for metal.

I did not experiment fully with different distortion pedals with this amp. I expect that it will respond great. I do a similar thing and have my pedal board set up to work with a clean amp as you do but also work in conjunction with an overdriven channel. I will be adding an OR15 to my permanent collection this week. I loved tracking with it and am looking forward to doing some fusion gigs with it in the coming weeks. I'll be using my pedals for sure so I will report back!

The or15 has much more gain reserves than the tt. But I wouldn't recommend buying an OR15 in your case. Just crank your tt with a boost pedal and you get enough gain for doing anything with that amp. I think if you want to "upgrade" your amp situation you should go with the dual terror: two channels (tt circuit and fat channel that sounds kinda like the dark terror gain stage), fx loop, 30 watts

tried it 2 days ago, it has all the tight chug you could ask for. tried it with a prs se 7 string and the jim root cab, and even with that setup drop a sounded clear, articulate, but still with some of that typical orange-warmth and body left. with full gain, it can also do some pretty awesome death metal tones among the lines of morbid angel or defeated sanity.

I have a semi-hollow Ibanez that I had to put some foam behind the pickups to keep them from getting microphonic at high gain / higher volumes. Depending on my proximity to the amp/cab now, I can control any of that feedback. I actually took this guitar out with me when I was playing in Fozzy some years back. We played pretty loud and at relatively high gain but I did not require or use any noise supressors. See if you can tell if it's your pickups or soundholes squealing. Good luck!

Yes. but I think you would want to use a DS or OD pedal to compress the guitar a bit. This amp has more of a "classic" open vibe, which I dig for metal and hard rock, but depending on how thrashy you want to get with it you might need or want a DS1 or a Tubescreamer to tighten it up a bit.

Hello Mike, This is an absolutely excellent review, and trust me, I've watched pretty much every OR15 review on KZbin ;) Question - A lot of people say this amp is not made for 'metal tones' and is voiced 'vintage', but I'm thinking when this amplifier is paired with some Celestion V30's in a nice cab such as the Orange 2x12 closed back, this amp would be excellent for thick, chimey tones for some progressive metal (such as Tool, Mastodon, etc.)? Would you agree or would you recommend another amplifier for this kind of music? I'm between the Jim Root #4 terror and this OR15, but what I am looking for in an amplifier is not a modern metal tone, but something that would be very versatile and has a thick and recognizable tone. It sounded to me that the Jim Root Terror is a lot more 'compressed' and lifeless than the OR15.
@Mike2of5Martin
@Mike2of5Martin 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I think this amp is super versatile. So much gain on tap you can get into metal territory easily. It takes overdrives and boosts well too so you can always do some tone shaping with your pedal board as well. Some of the most famous metal sounds involve a tubescreamer or other overdrive in front of an amp to push it over the edge. Not necessarily with a lot of gain, but to hit the front end of the amp a bit harder and maybe roll off a little bottom end. This and the Jim Root are both good choices!
@stromssasd2721

@Mike2of5Martin
@Mike2of5Martin 10 жыл бұрын
If the GT10 is a preamp, then you would just want to plug it into the effects return of the loop but try it in front too to see what works best. The loop on the OR15 is tube driven and may not be what you're looking for control-wise in which case the input is the way to go. From there, you might want to experiment with a different tube in V1 position. This little guy is versitile!

Hey Mike! Great video! Im deciding between the OR15 and the Jim Root Terror. Im more of a Sabbath, Ozzy, and Metallica kind of guy, but I also love those sweet tones from ACDC, Cream, and Zepplin. I just want a versatile amp that can do a good overdriven tone and that can play that classic metal/hard rock. Is this the amp?

+Anthony Ortolano +Renan TR Thanks! Of the two, the OR15 and the Jim Root, I purchased the OR15. I do like the Jim Root as well. It's voiced like a Rockerverb, which I love. For me, the OR15 has just a touch more headroom and cleans up a bit better, making it more versatile for my purposes. It takes pedals very well too so I can set it more "classic" and push it with an OD for more metal sounds, but it's a more classic metal sound for sure, which is my thing. I highly recommend this head. Especially for the price!

I do love this amp and want to get the 6505 mini as well. Both are super cool and have different flavors. The OR15 may make it slightly less versatile being that is has only one channel but you can get a wide variety of tones from it too. If you have to choose just one I'd go play them both and put them to their paces!

Hi MIke, great video. Hey I was wondering if you experience much noise from this amp? I have this exact amp and I got it brand, spankin new in the box back in March. About a month ago,(and this could be my imagination) I feel like I have started to get an unreasonable amount of noise from this thing, even with the volume at about 8 o'clock and gain at noon. I remember being impressed with how relatively quiet this amp was when I got it (in terms of feedback) I have it plugged into a great cabinet ( Mesa 2 x 12). I absolutely love this amp but am growing quite annoyed (and sad) about this issue. I even took it to an amp technician and I don't know if he was being lazy or what was going on, but he told me that he didn't think anything was wrong and "tube amps just make noise." I am completely aware of this as I have been playing guitar for 16 years now, but I must say I am fairly ignorant when it comes to the makings of an amp. Anyways, I did make a video (albeit poorly lit, apologies) tweaking the volume and gain knobs and I was wondering if you would be so kind as to watch and tell me what you think? I would really appreciate it. Thanks and hope to here from you. Here is the link...kzbin.info/door/d0GRcs6RQN5U-XikHTp8Rgvideos

+Joseph Giuffre I would definitely look into replacing your preamp tubes. Not sure which one is giving you all that noise (probably V1) but it's good to experiment with tubes anyway. Also, I'm not sure what guitar you're using in the video, but maybe try a few different guitars and make sure you haven't got any ground or shielding issues there. Hope that helps and let me know what you find. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Mike. I had a Les Paul plugged in, in the video. I also have a telecaster and it seems to do the same with that plugged in as well. There is always a chance they may both have issues but I doubt it. I ordered some tubes and they should arrive tomorrow. I will definitely let you know what happens. Again, Thanks!

It never hurts to double and triple check that all of your cables are good too. I've also had ground issues with some wiring in buildings so trying different outlets is one more thing you could try.

If I plug this into my Marshall 300 watt ab, will i get a full blast volume where I can gig with it with a 3 piece or would i just get 15 watts..

NazarethofHell also how many ohms?

NazarethofHell It's a loud 15 watts. I have used this amp on gigs with 4x12 cabinets and it sounds great. It's pretty rare that I can turn any amp all the way up without a front of house guy telling me my stage volume is to loud so this amp is great for cranking and getting power tube saturation and not pissing off the sound guy too badly. If you need more, monitors are your friend! This amp has a single 16ohm output and two 8ohm outputs.

Mike Martin Alright thanks man! :3 Also! is this any different than the OR50? or is that amp just a louder version?

is this loud enough to gig with?

Jaime Montes de Oca oh yes! 15 tube watts is pretty loud. I’ve done a lot of gigs with this amp since I got it and if I’ve ever needed more volume it’s been in a venue where they were going to mic up the cabinet anyway!

I run a Line 6 M9 in the effects loop for delays and reverbs and use a couple of different overdrives, etc. in front of it when I take this amp out for smaller gigs and rehearsals. Takes them great!

Depending on the situation, I would say yes. "Metal band with no PA", maybe not so much.
