It’s interesting but first impressions are generally correct. The first third of the video, I was sure number one was better. Then you started fingerpicking and guitar two sounded pretty good. Then the last third of the video I was convinced guitar one was Furch. The Furch does sound better in exactly the ways you described. The Orangewood is amazing for the price. There are so many guitars available today in the $800-$1200 that are really nice and give you a good experience. BUT, there is nothing like a high end guitar. I had to grab my Breedlove Legacy and play it after seeing this. Always nice to have a premium guitar. Thank you again. Great video.

Completely unbiased, I preferred the sound of guitar # 1 and the reveal was at no surprise to me which guitar was which. I could definitely hear right away a big difference in the sound between these two guitars - first listening on my Sennheiser headphones and then a second time through a good pair of studio reference monitors. Guitar #1 (Furch) sounded much richer and fuller and had a more pronounced, sweeter "bell" tone. It sounded much more balanced than the other guitar, as well. Guitar #2 (Orangewood) just sounded like a cheaper acoustic - with the buzzing sound in the strings, not as full/rich of a tone and wasn't as dynamic. Now, the Orangewood by itself sounds pretty good, especially when you factor in the lower price...but when you put it up next to the Furch, it's lesser qualities really stand out, IMO. Both guitars sounded great!...but in this "vs" video, I gotta give it to the Furch. However, I can't say I like it $5K more.

I bought a new Furch Red Deluxe on ebay for $2850 albeit the back and sides are rosewood but it was a really good deal. MSRP for my guitar was around $5700. Good deals are out there for amazing guitars. I really love my Furch. My 1992 HD28 is no slouch either! Love your videos, I actually went looking for a Furch after watching your factory tour review. The Furch was beautiful and sounded good but no way is it worth that much diff in $.

@scottfishkind53352 жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing this video Jeremy, these types of comparisons are super helpful in showing that you can get a great guitar without having to break the bank! I did want to add some comments, though I'm sure what I'm about to say is pretty obvious so please forgive me in advance. If you are looking to purchase one of these, unless you play it in person you really can't tell because there are always limitations with how something translates through a mic and your speakers. I recently purchased, after much research both reading and doing extensive listening, a Furch Yellow Master's Choice Gc-CR . What was interesting is that listening to very high quality recordings, by the same player and same mic, through decent quality headphones, the Blue Master's Choice sounded almost identical (in spite of the Mahogany versus Rosewood back and sides difference). The day I purchased my Furch, I played both the Blue and Yellow and also a Breedlove Premier Concert Redwood-Rosewood back to back... All beautiful sounding, playing, and aesthetically beautiful instruments. However, in-person, the difference was definitely noticeable. Believe me I wish the Blue sounded the same, a thousand dollars less, but this was a once-in-a-lifetime, dream guitar purchase so I was willing to pay the difference and I couldn't be happier with my decision. None of this is to say less expensive guitars can't be great! I have a Walden G630 CE and a Breedlove ECO Discovery S Concert Cedar-African Mahogany (both under $600 and which I did detailed demos of on my channel), even a $200 Yamaha FG 800, among other relatively inexpensive guitars, and I love them and play them all. In fact I often use my Walden or Breedlove when I play out because in most of the live settings I play, which are not optimal acoustic environments, the difference between those guitars and the Furch would get lost. Frankly I don't need to bring such a costly guitar and risk it getting damaged (I've had situations where another player's headstock slammed into my soundboard by accident due to close sitting arrangements, ouch!!) Still, I would have to say that the Furch Yellow Master's Choice Gc-CR is definitely a world-class instrument which had a very specific voice that spoke to me. But ultimately, if you love to play, you can completely enjoy a nicely set up $200-$600 imported, factory made guitar and never look back!!

I'm an old school Larrivee fan (before JC moved from Canada to Oxnard) and had never played a Furch until I bought their cedar top Baritone a few months ago, which blew me away. I knew Stonebridge was well respected back in the day but had never played one. Not only is the Baritone a wondrous instrument in itself, but I agree with your assessment of the Furch fit and finish. I want another one 🙂
@PemaWangchuk12 Жыл бұрын
I'd appreciate a pointer if you don't mind. I'd set my mind on a Larrivee OM for my next guitar, until the magnificence that is Furch popped up on my radar that is. And with that conflict is the fact that neither are available where I live, giving me no option of a hands-on sampling. Seeing as you have played from both makes, I wonder what your opinion would be if you were to be looking for an OM from either stable, with the specs and price bracket being similar, and assuming you didn't already have any guitars from the two in your collection. Both are evidently fantastic besides being great value, so what are the factors that would sway you to pick one over the other? Thanks!
@swainsongable Жыл бұрын
@@PemaWangchuk12 Hi Pema, thanks for asking the question - and the answer is easy: the Furch without any hesitation. Sadly, the build quality (and value for $) of Larrivee fell off a cliff when JC closed his Canadian shop and moved to the US to compete in a larger market. I'm no fan of Taylor (for sonic reasons, not aesthetics) but must admit I'd buy their cheapest entry level dreadnought before any Larrivee nowadays. Furch, on the other hand, is not only the best value for a solid wood guitar on the global market these days IMO, their fit and finish is peerless. But best if all, if you consider Taylor on the treble side of the sonic spectrum (which is why their "thin" voice doesn't appeal to me) and Martin favouring a fuller bass, Furch is ideally balanced between - which is what I loved about Larrivee, all 4 of the ones I still own. And JSYK I was so enthralled with my mahogany cedar top Baritone that I bought a second one, this time with Rosewood, since my post above. I use the hog for gigging, and the Rosewood to record :)

@@swainsongable Hi there again. Thanks for getting back. Thought it was a long shot since your comment was a year ago. And yes, I did wonder if you followed through with the intended purchase. Cedar top and baritone again? Or Spruce/EIR this time? Either way I can only imagine they're a joy to have around in your stable(which, btw, appears to be enviable👌🏼)While I found it intriguing initially to have zeroed in on the same two makes that you've favoured, after reading about the sound profile you prefer and lean towards, it's not that surprising considering that's practically my line of thought too. I'd rather have the thumping lows of a Martin over a Taylor that I find overly bright if there were no other choice. However I don't mind having the booming bass down a notch or two for more articulate mids and treble. Now there are quite some brands that fit the bill, but crucially these two are the best fit for my pocket. Anyway, thanks for the insight, it'll certainly be a helpful tip going forward. Cheers!

@@PemaWangchuk12 Yes, cedar top again, which trades off the woody warmth of mahogany for the resonance, sustain and ethereal grace notes of the EIR. Both are tremendous guitars. For sure the first obviously thing was that #1 was a cannon in the high frequencies and sung, and #2 was muffled and had a blanket on top. Different strings might help there. #2 almost sounded like a cedar/mahogany type of guitar, and when strummed hard it felt more balanced and tamed. Whereas #1 could get harsh a bit. Both would be fantastic on a recording. I also have a feeling that with enough time, a player would adapt to the guitar and play "brighter" or "darker" to normalize the instrument quirks. I have had a Redwood/Macassar Ebony Furch on order for a bit. Can't wait for it!

I know that Furch has different price ranges. It would be good to compare a Furch on the 1,000 dollar range (Indigo and Violet) vs. the Orangewood. Saying that, I just bought a Furch Vintage DSM, which is not one of their most expensive models, and I also own an Orangewood Echo. Same conclusion, the Furch guitar sounds much better, but the Orangewood is not bad. I have recommended Orangewood to friends buying it as their first guitar. I used to have a Fender acoustic, but the Orangewood at the same price was much better.
@rmzzz762 жыл бұрын
Both guitars sound great, but in every A-B test demo I picked guitar #2. Have been playing for 20+ years and only own all solid wood acoustics, most of them USA built. Also was listening on $1200 Studio Monitors. The Orangewood had more dynamics and single note clarity. I love these sort of A-B test and have done a few on my little channel... The guitar instrument and gear industry largely takes advantage of consumer ignorance and the notion "pay more = get more", then you factor in artist indorsements for brands and models, etc... I don't think there is more snake oil in any industry muddying the waters for players getting the best guitar at the price price point for their needs. You also have craftsmanship vs function. The Furch has expensive appointments and I imagine some material cost there distinguishing it that will be of value to some buyers, but really don't add function for someone just looking for a great playing, great sounding guitar. The cost of ornamentation, etc.. play in to that pricing. So thank you for this and please make more videos like this!
@andygrove2852 ай бұрын
I totally agree. What I hear with the Furch is a background of mush (uncorrelated noise and harmonics) that obscures each string's dynamic envelope (attack/decay) and tonal definition. It's like viewing a scene through frosted glass. So many people listen with their preconceptions. You can see comments that one person likes a guitar because it's brighter, and in another comment because it's darker - about the very same guitar in a shootout comparison. There is literally an "astroturf" marketing campaign going on with these brands that really is clouding people's judgement...

I'm not at the level of guitar listening that I can say which sounds like a better guitar, only what sounds good to me. #1 had more clarity of individual strings but sounded very trebly...maybe that is how good guitars sound? But for me, I favored #2 for what I felt was a richness in tone, a bit deeper with bass notes and more resonant. even though #2 did not have the clarity of #1, I wouldn't say it was muddier, I would say it was more of a nice blended tone. I listened with some decent JBL headphones that I listen to a lot of guitar demonstration videos with, so I’m used to them in this context. Overall #1 had a more 3 dimensional sound and presence. I have a Furch Yellow Master’s Choice Gc-CR and even though it has a Cedar top and Rosewood back and sides, Furch has a distinct voice. Guitar, #2 had a bit more of a boxey sound at times, but other times it was hard to tell the difference, depending on the type of attack you were using on the strings. I would imagine that in person the differences would be more obvious since KZbin downloads will never replicate the sound exactly, so many variables from the mic used, the signal chain, and perhaps some compression from KZbin itself? Still, the Orangewood sounded extremely good and very impressive especially for the price!

I could hear more “depth” out of guitar 1 like the bass has more clean headroom and dynamics. The sound of guitar 2 was fine, sounded compressed and muted to me. Almost like it had been processed for an NPR radio jingle or something from the early 2000s. I think both have their place, and both are going to serve someone well. Like someone said Eastman would be interesting to shoot out but they aren’t making it easy for KZbin creators who aren’t dealers themselves. I really do wish they would stop being so closed minded about this.

Way closer then I expected, I wonder if some of the nuance is lost in recording .

Some is lost because of KZbin compressing the videos for sure.

I have had my Orangewood Sage for about 4 months. It was playable the first month, and then it went downhill from there. So much so that tomorrow I have to drop it off for a complete overhaul. These guitars look pretty good, and on paper they have great stats (and that price!!!), but, honestly, it is a huge risk. Also, careful about the 30 day warranty thing, there are some clauses in there that could cause you to pretty quickly lose the 30day money back guarantee thing (keep the box it was shipped in and don't be tempted to put that pick guard on!). Orangewood, as a company, has been wonderful to deal with, the people in CA are super chill, but their guitars (or my experience with my guitar being fair) has been such a major letdown. I have an unplayable guitar. If this guitar tech can't fix it so the strings don't sit on the neck I am going to scrap it for parts. I cannot BEGIN to tell you how disappointed I am in the entire thing. So, buyer beware. Great guitar deals are only great if the guitar is playable.

I have yet to have an inexpensive acoustic guitar that was not stable. 100s probably. Had plenty that didn't sound great, but none that fell apart.
@illopedragoon2 жыл бұрын
@@peteleoni9665 yeah, just got back from dropping it off/initial review. Tech said guitar has dual action truss rod, which is my first time dealing with. He also recommends filing down a chunk of the frets to help with all of the buzz, as the neck not only is bowed but warped--with action higher on lower strings than higher strings.
@peteleoni96652 жыл бұрын
I have had to do minor set up work on just about every guitar I ever had especially Gibsons..In the end you can expect to work on an acoustic guitar and make it play well, but if it sounds bad, nothing can be done. The only real reason to pay a lot for any guitar is resell or investment, certainly not sonically anymore. When a guitar is shipped, it's likely to need work. If you like low action, it will likely need work...etc etc... Nut are almost always too high, and that is *universal* big money or small. Get a good sounding guitar, prepare to work on it regardless of initial cost. To me a guitar is a tool. I don't have one of those "guitar shrines" with incense and candles (-: Well ...I do have an 82 year old Gibson archtop that deserves at least a kiss or something (-:
@illopedragoon2 жыл бұрын
@@peteleoni9665 all true. I have 18 guitars currently, not sure how many I have owned over the years. And certainly, being wood and all, they required some noodling to make sound their best, address actions issues, etc. What is different is that this was the first guitar I had that became unplayable (6, 7, 11, 12, 13 & 15 all dead frets), and within a very short period of time. Not a little buzzy, or something that is easily fixed. I am not trying to rain on Orangewood's parade, or Jeremy's. it sounds like a lot of people have had great experiences. Not me, and I just wanted to put that out there. I bought the Sage because it had good reviews, a great price and great sounding specs. I feel a little silly now. Kudos to all that got good ones!

They sound a lot of like to me,I'm not impressed with either one of them.But I would choose number Two if I had to choose.I have nine guitars and I bought a five hundred dollar Epiphone Dove and it sounds better than these two,I have high end Taylors and Martins but I prefer Taylor over the Martins.Over thirty five thousand dollars in my nine guitars so I take playability and tone and craftsmanship very serious.I actually thought the orangewood sounded a bit better.I recommend someone wanting an affordable guitar check out the Epiphone Dove it was crazy how easy and a really great sounding guitar, It's not by no means in the rate of Talyors or Martins but for the money it is absolutely a great sounding guitar ,I played one because I wanted a cheaper guitar to take outside or a campfire but when I tried it out I had to have it.It in my opinion it's a keeper ,Taylors is my love in guitars and Martin comes second.This Epiphone for the money rates very high with me.I just haven't played a Furch that has made me have to have it yet not saying it's not out there but I haven't loved any that I've tried.

Not even close. #1 projects better, has beautiful tone, and sounds like you have an easier time playing it. #2 sounds similar when fingerpicked, but there's an immediate difference when strummed. It sounds thuddy. Without the comparison guitar it sounds alright.

Dont know yet, not at end but #2 is a better sounding guitar, more definition less boomy, would record better, be more interesting on a guitar vocal gig for certain. I would play #2

OK… I tried to find my original comment to this addendum… I think it’s number 1 which, I said as a more sparkly top and also sounds more clangy… I hear more of a metallic sound of strings and threats… Guitar number2 I hear more wood and more warmth even if I hear a little less articulation of notes..

Suspected Furch was #1. At the end of the day, when the sun is setting, Furch is much more likely to stand behind their product and the build quality is undoubtedly miles beyond Orangewood. I've not heard good things about Orangewood standing by their product. I'll say it again Jeremy, if you are more inclined to go with a $850 guitar, nobody compares to the new IBG Epiphone Hummingbird. Like you, I've cuddled with many guitars in my life and have NEVER played a guitar under $1,000 that came remotely close to the IBG Hummingbird. I realize that these 2 you have here are 000 styles, but since value/sound is the topic, I'd have to go with Furch. However, if you just can't let go of $6K, IBG Hummingbird is the answer. And no sir, I don't work for them and they aren't paying me to say that. I'm simply that impressed, dollar for dollar. Great vid brother man, as always. I love what you do and always wish you and your family the best. I think you've got a great ministry here.
